Loyal Subjects

When one nation becomes two, or when two nations become one, what does national affiliation mean or require? Elizabeth Duquette answers this question by demonstrating how loyalty was used during the U.S. Civil War to define proper allegiance to the Union. For Northerners during the war, and individuals throughout the nation after Appomattox, loyalty affected the construction of national identity, moral authority, and racial characteristics.Loyal Subjects considers how the Civil War complicated the cultural value of emotion, especially the ideal of sympathy. Through an analysis of literary works written during and after the conflict-from Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Chiefly About War Matters" through Henry James's The Bostonians and Charles Chestnutt's "The Wife of His Youth," to the Pledge of Allegiance and W.E.B. Du Bois's John Brown, among many others-Duquette reveals that although American literary criticism has tended to dismiss the Civil War's impact, postwar literature was profoundly shaped by loyalty.

Loyal Protestants and Dangerous Papists analyzes the vibrant and often violent political culture of seventeenth-century America, exploring the relationship between early American and early modern British politics through a detailed study of colonial Maryland. Seventeenth-century Maryland was repeatedly wracked by disputes over the legitimacy of the colony’s Catholic proprietorship. The proprietors’ strange policy of religious liberty was part of the controversy, but colonists also voiced fears of proprietary conspiracies with Native Americans and claimed the colony’s ruling circle aimed to crush their liberties as English subjects. Conflicts like these became wrapped up in disputes less obviously political, such as disagreements over how to manage the tobacco trade, without which Maryland’s economy would falter. Antoinette Sutto contends that the turbulent political history of early Maryland makes most sense when seen in an imperial as well as an American context. Such an understanding of political culture and conflict in this colony offers a window not only into the processes of seventeenth-century American politics but also into the construction of the early modern state. Examining the dramatic rise and fall of Maryland’s Catholic proprietorship through this lens, Loyal Protestants and Dangerous Papists offers a unique glimpse into the ambiguities and possibilities of the early English colonial world.

The first book in English to evaluate this heroic if abortive insurrection of the Tyroleans against the Napolenic new order in Europe. The uprising was motivated by the desire to shake off Bavarian control and to return to the Habsburg monarchy rather than by Pan-German interests as German nationalists have claimed. Widespread fascination with the uprising has not abated in 175 years; partly because of its picturesque setting, colorful personalities, and tragic ending as symbolized by Andreas Hofer, its peasant leader, and partly because of the ongoing controversy between Austria and Italy regarding the status of the area where he was born) the Sudtirol/Alto Adige region.

Loyal to the Land is a sweeping history of one of the United States' largest working ranches, the Big Island of Hawai'i's Parker Ranch. In this wide-ranging and insightful book, illustrated with more than 250 historical photos, Dr. Billy Bergin first discusses the important Hispanic vaquero roots of ranching in Hawai'i. He then relates the histories of the five foundation families, providing information on key members who contributed to the Ranch's success. The balance of the book examines every aspect of Parker Ranch development: management, labor, improvements and diversification of livestock, veterinary and animal care programs, and the Ranch's role and influence on the Big Island and the state.

Located in Waimea on the Big Island of Hawai‘i, Parker Ranch is not only one of the largest cattle ranches in the United States, but also one of the oldest and most historic. Originally published in 2008, this third volume of Loyal to the Land: The Legendary Parker Ranch continues the history of the ranch and chronicles the transition of its management into the hands of mainlanders Gordon Lent and Jack Rubel. This was a significant departure from past practice and marked the beginning of two decades during which dramatic redirection occurred. As a close observer and active participant in ranch operations during this period, Dr. Billy Bergin provides a first-hand account of the events of that time. His personal insight is supported by almost 200 photographs that deftly move the reader through twenty years of life on the ranch. He describes the management influences of Lent and Rubel, who envisioned guiding the ranch to greater levels of production and economic solvency, as well as the years of Don Hanson and Walter Slater. Ranch management soon shifted back to men of Hawai‘i when Charlie Kimura, David Ramos, and Robby Hind assumed leadership. During his successful tenure, Hind launched a new initiative exporting cattle to mainland markets through Canada. This bold move enabled Parker Ranch to export its entire calf crop—nearly 12,000 calves—to the continental US after the closure of the Hawai‘i Meat Company and Hawai‘i Milling Corporation feedlot complex on O‘ahu. This changed the way cattle were marketed in Hawai‘i for the ensuing decades. With the deteriorating health of ranch owner Richard Smart, a decline in stewardship became evident as trustees imposed directives that put the ranch at risk. Disenchanted by the perceived lack of reasonable stewardship of ranch resources—physical, animal, and human—employees yearned for a return to the good years. The passing of Richard Smart, challenges to his will by his sons Antony and Gilliard, tax burdens, and less-than-ideal industry factors further encumbered the mission of the trustees to achieve fiscal stability. Still, the storied ranch remained a crown jewel in the midst of the cobalt blue Pacific Ocean.

Waimea, Hawai?i, inhabited by humankind for more than twelve centuries, has been home to Parker Ranch for 175 storied years. The history of this land is lovingly chronicled in the book series, Loyal to The Land: The Legendary Parker Ranch, written by a longtime ranch veterinarian and kama, Dr. Billy Bergin. This fourth and final volume, An Enduring Sense of Place, recounts the evolution of Parker Ranch from the passing of venerable owner Richard Smart in 1992 through the following three decades. The author utilizes a variety of uncommon sources—his vast personal experience, interviews, direct observations, letters, news stories, and Parker Ranch annual reports, memos, and strategic plans—to paint a multifaceted picture of executive operations as well as the interpersonal relations and daily life of the ranch ohana. This book opens with the final years of Dr. Bergin’s tenure. At that time, the ranch was transitioning from sole-owner oversight by Smart, to governance by trustees who had to deal with a land rich, cash poor, sprawling Hawaiian ranch. As the author witnessed, the challenges confronting the ranch were considerable. The exodus of veteran employees under the Voluntary Separation Program left a younger generation of cowboys without mentorship, leading to unintended cattle loss, distrust in management, and a decline in morale. Still, the ranch endured. In the ensuing decade, a sense of organizational calm emerged when trusteeship was separated from management. CEO Chris Kanazawa’s receptiveness to field leadership and community engagement proved to be an effective business strategy. In more recent times, the horse program and the Paniolo Cattle Company witnessed progressive remodeling by CEO Neil "Dutch" Kuyper. The Paniolo Power initiative looks towards a sustainable future using wind, sun, water, and geothermal energy sources. At its core, this volume is a celebration of the men and women of Parker Ranch, who are, in the words of Smart, "the ranch’s greatest assets" Anyone who ever worked at Parker Ranch remains connected to this special place at the heart of Waimea; the stories presented here are expressions of their enduring loyalty to the land.

During World War I, approximately 100,000 Jews served in the German army, of whom around 80,000 fought on the Front and 12,500 were killed, died, or went missing in action. About 35,000 were decorated, 23,000 promoted, and more than 2,000 became officers. Using excerpted diaries and memoirs of soldiers from all branches of the army, this book - now available in paperback - describes their war experiences on the Western, Eastern, Balkan, and Ottoman Fronts. It also looks at the impressions of other nationalities and their varied feelings about anti-Semitism in the army. Historiographical details, as well as religious and other details, are provided, and, in the process, a look inside the vanished world of Eastern European Jewry is given by the soldiers who served there. The book also contains an extensive analysis of the Judenzahlung (Jewish census) of October 1916 - a pivotal event in the post-war development of German anti-Semitism. Loyal Sons closes with a few examples of the fate of these veterans, whose Fatherland 'thanked them' for their loyal service less than two decades later with all the horrors of the Holocaust.

By focusing on patterns of immigration and acculturation in a small industrial city in the northeastern United States, Mark Paul Richard offers a noteworthy look at the ways in which French-Canadians negotiated their identity in the United States and provides new insights into the ways in which immigrants "Americanize".Richard’s work challenges prevailing notions of "assimilation". As he shows, “acculturation” better describes the roundabout process by which some ethnic groups join their host society. He argues that, for more than a century, the French- Canadians in Lewiston, Maine, pursued the twin objectives of ethnic preservation and acculturation. These were not separate goals but rather intertwined processes. Underscored with statistics compiled by the author, Loyal but French portrays the French-Canadian history of Lewiston, from the 1880s through the 1990s, in this light. With a wealth of data, the insights of a professional historian, and the sensitivity of a "local", Richard offers a new conceptualization of ways that immigrants become "Americans".

Most people, including myself are afraid of being honest because of the fear of the outcome. We may feel that telling a fib will be the easy way out. This is why Layla gives another example of how kids can handle that fear and try to bring whatever situation they may be in to a better outcome. Not only does Layla demonstrates honesty in this book, but she also shows how to give back more by apologizing. She goes out her way to add an extra good deed with her apology for telling a fib. In conclusion, Layla the Ladybug feels better about herself and she feels less stress. I want to inspire all kids using the character Layla the Ladybug, to overcome that feeling of fear and to be honest. Try to handle a difficult situation with honesty, and follow it up by demonstrating a good deed.
