G.A. Buergers Ballade Lenore in England

G.A. Buergers Ballade Lenore in England

Jahrhunderts vorgenommen."

On the faulty intellectual origins of shareholder primacy—and how policy can win back what’s been lost. In an era of shareholder primacy, share price is king. Businesses operate with short-term goals to deliver profits to shareholders, enjoying stability (and bonuses) in the process. While the public bemoans the doctrine for its insularity and wealth-consolidating effects, its influence over corporate governance persists. Good Company offers an exacting argument for why shareholder primacy was never the right model to follow for truly understanding how corporations operate. Lenore Palladino shows that corporations draw power from public charters—agreements that allow corporations to enjoy all manner of operational benefits. In return, companies are meant to innovate for the betterment of the societies that support them. However, that debt—increasingly wielded for stock buybacks and shareholder bonuses—is not being repaid. Palladino theorizes a modern corporation that plays its intended role while delivering social and economic good in the process and offers tangible policy solutions to make this a reality. Good Company is both an expert introduction to the political economy of the firm—as it was, as it is, as it can be—and a calibrating examination of how public policy can shape companies, and societies, for the better.

This book traces the development of American private interests in the Pacific before the 1840s—trading, whaling, sealing, missionary work, etc.—and the gradual evolution of U.S. governmental interests in the region beginning with the 1840s. While governmental policies in the Pacific at first complemented the private interests in the region, public policy had by the late decades of the 19th century begun to develop in directions that had little relation to specific or genuine private interests in the Pacific. The result was that by 1899 a serious gap had been created between the policies and actions of the United States government and private American interests in the Pacific—a gap that would create problems for American policy in the 20th century.

Virginia 'Sissy' Clemm falls in love with her cousin Edgar Allan Poe when she's merely a girl of seven. Fourteen years her elder, he's dark and brooding, the picture of a little girl's romantic fantasy. He floats in and out of her childhood, as he fails his way through West Point, the military and a succession of editorial jobs where his talents aren't appreciated. Each time he returns, their odd friendship grows stronger, and her understanding of the moody, troubled writer takes on new and strange dimensions. But her childhood crush takes a serious turn, when he proposes marriage at 13. Her mother objects, but Sissy cannot be swayed. She devotes her young life to Edgar Allan Poe. This provocative novel explores the curious and confounding relationship between Edgar Allan Poe and his child bride Sissy, who, before she died of consumption at age 25, was Poe's constant companion, critic and friend. Lenore Hart, author of Becky, explores the inner life of one of literature's most heralded and haunted figures by imagining the heart of the woman who loved him, inspired him and undid him.
