Leon Trotsky and the Art of Insurrection 1905-1917
First published in 1988. A functional definition of revolutionary military leadership is essential in understanding Leon Trotsky's role in the Russian Revolution, and it is this goal that Harold Walter Nelson explores in this title. The author states that the words, revolutionary and general carry a heavy connotative burden, and when the first is used to modify the second the new term does not lend itself to easy definition. This book pursues an analysis of this title from the context of the Russian military from 1905-1917.

Leon H. Keyserling: A Progressive Economist is the insightful biography of the life and thought of the influential liberal reformer Leon H. Keyserling. By examining Keyserling's life in the context of integrative liberalism, the biography aims to explore the origins of the concept of integrative liberalism and Keyserling's profound and provocative contribution to it. The book follows the political reformer's life from the beginning of his career as a member of Democratic Senator Robert Wagner's staff, at the same time showing how the Progressive Movement, before World War I, was the ideological and institutional origin for integrative liberalism. The Great Depression and subsequent New Deal, to which Keyserling was a significant contributor, allowed integrative liberalism to develop until the movement started losing vitality in the 1960's and came to an end during the Reagan Presidency. In the meantime, the book presents Keyserling as a major sculptor of Truman's economic policies, after which he left the government and began effectively debating public policy on his own. Tracing Keyserling's interactions with each presidency, the biography shows that Keyserling's policies and politics were expressive of integrated liberalism, an often-overlooked philosophy of reform in the second half of the twentieth century. The ideological cornerstone of integrative liberalism was a full employment public policy, expressed as economic growth and developed directly from United States history. The fear driving the policy was that there would be wide swings in the business cycle, resulting in underemployment and economic stagnation. This sentiment and fear has an impact even now in the twenty-first century, making Leon H. Keyserling a timely and profitable study for graduate and undergraduate students of history, economics, political science, and public administration.

Leon Trotsky was a key political figure of the twentieth century – a leader of the Russian Revolution, founder of the Red Army, author of books on literature, history, morality and politics. Leon Trotsky: Writings in Exile contains some of his most insightful and penetrating works. Thrown out of Russia by Stalin, Trotsky settled in Mexico, and turned to the only weapon he had left – words. In these writings he defends the 1917 Bolshevik revolution, warns prophetically of fascism and analyses anti-colonial movements in the global south. This collection gives a sense of the real Trotsky – passionate, humanist, Marxist.

John Colton is a meticulous researcher and a fine craftsman. In his political biography of Leon Blum, these two qualities are beautiully blended; none of the available evidence appears to have been over looked, and the enormous mass of variegated material has been transmuted in a polished, richly tapestried, and absorbing narrative.

Leon Forrest: Introductions and Interpretations combines biography and various methods of critical analysis to interpret the work of this important African-American novelist and essayist, who critics have compared to Joyce, Faulkner, and Tolstoy. Highly praised by Saul Bellow, Ralph Ellison and Toni Morrison, Forrest's four novels present a remarkably rich and engaging view of contemporary African-American urban culture and its roots in the southern past. The book includes a general introduction which surveys Forrest's life and presents an interpretation of the unity of his fiction, as well as individual essays offering different interpretations of Forrest's four major novels, three interviews with the writer, and a detailed chronology and bibliography.

This volume highlights the work of American artist Leon Polk Smith (1906-96), one of the founders of the hard-edge style of minimalist art, who rose to prominence in the late 1950s and early 1960s with his distinctive shaped canvas series. While his minimalist peers were shifting away from modernism, Smith was wholeheartedly advancing the formal and rational elements of the modernist tradition, in particular the legacy of Mondrian. Published for a 2017 exhibition at Lisson Gallery, this book focuses on paintings and drawings from the artist's seminal Constellation series from the late 1960s and early 1970s. The publication features an essay by the poet and writer John Yau, alongside color reproductions of each of the works included in the exhibition. An illustrated chronology details the artist's life and work, including previously unpublished archival material.

From his very first day at Flintworne Junior School, it is apparent that there is something different about Leon Sparks. Quite how different is known initially by a very few - the headmaster, Mr Knutt; Leon's Year 5 teacher, Mrs Gulliver; the school's caretaker, Mr Flynn; and two unconventional 'school inspectors', who keep him in sight at all times. Soon, the true nature of the unassuming, pale-skinned boy who clutches a silver briefcase, is revealed to a handful of new school friends, and is suspected by another of the school's teachers. But when reports of strange lights over the school appear in the newspapers, shadowy agents from a foreign land also begin to show a keen interest in the school and its newest pupil.
