The Feeding System of the Pigeon (Columba livia L.)

Anthropocentricity and pragmatism seem to be the main reasons why pigeons have served as the "black boxes" of so many psychologists and neurobehaviorists during the past decade. Anthropocentricity, because at first glance pigeons show several strik ing features which bear a beautiful similarity to human systems in respects such as drinking, bipedality, territoriality, and apparently easy pursual of individual interests. Pragmatism, because of the suspected lesser complexity of the pigeon's system, which enables them to serve as good paradigms for human systems. For example, the visually guided grasping system of the beak could be used as a model for the visually guided grasping system of the tips of the thumb and forefinger in humans (personal communi cation, Zeigler). Other pragmatic reasons are the low cost of breeding these birds, their easy adaptation to experimental conditions, and their obvious capacity for learning and remembering. Although a closer and more critical examination largely undermines the anthropomorphic arguments, this has not diminished interest in the pigeon. In many studies on sensorimotor and motivational processes of hunger, thirst, and learning, pecking and drinking behavior serve as the systems on which the outcome of different black box systems is measured. Clear examples of this application are found in McFarland (1964, 1965), Dawkins (1966), Dawkins and Dawkins (1973), Goodman and Schein (1974), Machliss (1977), and Zeigler, Levitt, and Levine (1980).

Kendall and Kylie Jenner, stars on the hit reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians, present their debut novel--a thrilling dystopian story about two super-powered girls who embark on a journey together. In a world of the far future, the great City of Indra has two faces: a beautiful paradise floating high in the sky, and a nightmare world of poverty carved beneath the surface of the Earth. Lex grew up in an orphanage deep in the dark. But even as a child, she instinctively rebelled against her fate--the time when she would be judged either useful to Society or forced to live among the mutations in Rock Bottom, the lowest level. When she is chosen to become an elite cadet of the Population Control Forces, only her fellow cadet Kane truly understands her longing for freedom. Unknown to her, one girl secretly shares her defiance. Livia Cosmo, the Orphan Airess, may live on a sky island surrounded by wealth and privilege, but she is just as restricted as Lex. Rigid discipline governs her every movement, as she learns the art of becoming a Proper Young Woman, the belle of the Emergence Ball, ready to be picked for "cohabitation" by the finest of the Proper Young Men. Her future is assured, until an intriguing encounter with a young man named Kane changes everything. For that is when Lex's and Livia's destinies collide.... Approached by an old enemy to help save Kane from mortal danger, Lex sacrifices her Special Ops career to find him in the Islands among the clouds. Her search, high above in the beautiful spires of the City of Indra, brings her instead to the airgirl Livia. Lex and Livia should have nothing in common, and yet they share a kindred yearning for escape from the strict rules that bind them...and a mystifying identical mark. Brought together by danger, they set out to find Kane, but what they discover is even stranger than either dreams.

Two sisters, one destiny . . .Lex and Livia are on the run.In Time of the Twins, Lex, an impulsive military cadet, and Livia, a pampered Airess, have just found out they are twins, which is against the law in the great City of Indra. Now they are leaving behind the only world they have ever known: for Lex, it was the dark world of the Hub below the surface of Indra, where she survived the brutal Orphanage to become an elite member of Indra's Population Control Forces, and for Livia, it was a life of luxury on the sky island of Helix, where she was brought up to be a Proper Indrithian Young Woman. With help from the charming and handsome Kane, Lex's best friend and Livia's newfound love, and Zavier, a gruff rebel who would prefer to leave them all behind, they make the grueling trek through the dangerous underground tunnels toward the Outlands beyond the dome of Indra in search of the mother they thought was dead. When they finally reach the Outlanders' colony, they discover their mother holds the key to unlocking their past, and they must confront an ancient prophecy, "The Time of the Twins." The prophecy claims they are the long-awaited "twin saviors," destined to save the City of Indra from the oppressive High Council who have long reigned over all of its people. Will Lex and Livia agree to be a part of their mother's dangerous plan and take on the daunting role of the "twin saviors"? Will they trust their mother and put themselves in jeopardy to save countless lives? It's a responsibility they never asked for . . . but one that may prove impossible to ignore. With unforgettable characters, an action-packed pace, and the sparks of new romance, the Jenner sisters have created a page-turning, heart-stopping adventure that will leave you wanting more.

A historical tradition of Roman origin represents Livia Drusilla, the third and much-beloved wife of Caesar Augustus, as a conniving, Borgia-like criminal. This view of Livia maintains that to promote the political career of her son by her former husband, Livia killed or incapacitated Augustus' descendants through his previous wife. Author Robert Graves, in his famous novel, I, Claudius, based his fictitious rendering of Livia upon this malevolent representation of her. The conceit is patently wrong, and essentially all modern scholars of Roman history reject it. But thanks to Graves' immensely entertaining book, and the British Broadcasting Corporation adaptation of it for television, the image of Livia as a devious dynastic murderess prevails in the popular mind.I, Livia: The Counterfeit Criminal aspires to correct the misconception, and present an accurate assessment of this much-maligned woman. The study's comfortably readable style is intended for general audiences. The first three chapters present a biographical sketch, focused upon Livia's public life. Livia was accepted as an extraordinarily visible, dynamic and influential political personage, by a society and culture which maintained women must confine their activities childrearing and other domestic pursuits. The following two chapters demonstrate the absurdity of Livia's criminal reputation, and offer explanation for its development. Three subsequent chapters seek Livia's private side - her habits, tastes, and interpersonal relationships. Livia (who suffered from colds and chronic arthritis) was an amiable soul with a self-deprecating sense of humor. She was a loving, supportive, forbearant wife and mother, an intellectual with profound political insights, an enthusiastic traveller, a connoisseur of art. Although generally patient and demure, she could also be impulsive, assertive, opinionated and, especially in later life, petulant. The final chapter examines how Livia became, and remained, a symbol of Roman imperial power. The brief epilogue describes the physical appearances of Livia and the members of her family. Also included are relevant appendices, a comprehensive bibliography, and color images of surviving wall paintings from her homes.

Functional Morphology of the Tail Apparatus of the Pigeon (Columba livia)

Functional Morphology of the Tail Apparatus of the Pigeon (Columba livia)

This volume provides a comprehensive, highly detailed topographical description of the entire tail apparatus of the pigeon including a functional analysis of the movements of the entire tail and its appendages, namely the flight feathers. The manner in which the flight feathers are incorporated into the uropygium has never before been so carefully studied. Foremost among the features of the tail described here for the first time is the bulb of the rectrices. The topographic relationships of the bulb, its external and internal architecture, the attachments and arrangements of its flight feathers, and its socket are described. Also included are accounts of the components of the tail, its skeleton, joints, intrinsic and extrinsic musculature, vasculature, and innervation. There is an analysis of the movements of the entire tail and its various elements, as well as a discussion of the topographic and functional relationships of the tail and cloaca, of the neural control of the tail and of its functions in flight, braking and balance. A preliminary comparative survey of the tail apparatus in representatives of several avian orders has been made. Finally, the unexpected influence of the tail apparatus in visceral functions such as defecation, respiration and vocalization is considered.
