Discourse Analysis as Theory and Method is a systematic introduction to discourse analysis as a body of theories and methods for social research. It brings together three central approaches, Laclau and Mouffe's discourse theory, critical discourse analysis and discursive psychology, in order to establish a dialogue between different forms of discourse analysis often kept apart by disciplinary boundaries. The book introduces the three approaches in a clear and easily comprehensible manner, explaining the distinctive philosophical premises and theoretical perspectives of each approach as well as the methodological guidelines and tools they provide for empirical discourse analysis. The authors also demonstrate the possibilities for combining different discourse analytical and non-discourse analytical approaches in empirical study. Finally, they contextualize discourse analysis within the social constructionist debate about critical social research, rejecting the view that a critical stance is incompatible with social constructionist premises and arguing that critique must be an inherent part of social research.

«A brilliant, touching and thought-provoking book. Moving Along merges academic research with personal narrative and beautifully rendered drawings to create a one-of-a-kind book that contributes fresh and compelling perspectives. This life-affirming graphic novel is essential reading for anyone interested in Parkinson’s and the power of art and community to sustain and nurture the human spirit.» (David Leventhal, Program Director and Founding Teacher, Dance for PD®, Mark Morris Dance Group, Brooklyn, NY USA) «This is a wonderfully accessible book that has been co-created by people living with Parkinson’s, researchers and artists. In the true-to-life stories, the anxieties and challenges of living with Parkinson’s are explored in evocative cartoons. Yet , as well as talking about the challenges, the book has the joy of dancing at its heart. Dance has proved to be an exceptionally good catalyst for living well with Parkinson’s and this graphic novel illustrates individual journeys through Parkinson’s and into dance. For anyone curious about dancing who now lives with Parkinson’s, or knows someone who does, this book is for you. For anyone interested in graphic medicine, dance for wellbeing, or arts in healthcare, this book is an important addition to the literature. » (Professor Sara Houston, author of Dancing with Parkinson’s) Meet Hugo, Karen, Alma, Helene, Anne-Marie, Poul, Lone, and Eskild, who go to Parkinson’s dance class together. They are characters in this graphic novel, which is based on many stories about Parkinson’s. The stories come from participants in Parkinson’s dance who have talked about how dance involves bodily, aesthetic experiences, including the feeling of bubbles in their bodies and flying together. Dancing brings joy, energy, and community, and thereby strengthens the will to live, all important when a chronic illness turns your world upside down. This book, a co-produced research-based graphic novel, is designed for use in the fields of arts and health, medical humanities, graphic medicine, and narrative medicine. It is also written for people with Parkinson’s, or other chronic diseases, and their families. The book invites dialogue about the existential dimensions of chronic illness, especially Parkinson’s, and long-term caregiving.

An expedition from the University of Chicago excavated the site of Bismaya (ancient Adab) from December 24, 1903, until late June 1905. The excavations were directed first by Edgar J. Banks and then, briefly, by Victor S. Persons. Over 1,000 artifacts, many of them early cuneiform documents, were sent to Chicago, where they are now housed in the Oriental Institute Museum The results of the Bismaya excavations were never properly published, and most of the material was never published at all. Banks wrote a lively and highly readable popular account, Bismya, or the Lost City of Adab, that appeared in 1912 and gave the impression that his field methods were considerably less than satisfactory. However, that was not the case. Banks kept a careful field diary, complete with highly accurate sketches, and sent detailed weekly reports, lavishly illustrated with his own drawings, back to Chicago. These materials show that he excavated a mid-third millennium B.C. temple and discovered some of the world' s first historical inscriptions incised on stone vessels dedicated in that structure. He also uncovered residences of the late Early Dynastic period, two Akkadian administrative centers, and a palace of the Isin-Larsa/Old Babylonian period. This monograph presents this large and significant corpus of unpublished material and includes analyses of stratigraphy, architecture, sculpture, cylinder seals, metalwork, and pottery, and discussions of chronology, the succession of the first kings of Adab, and administrative practices during the third millennium B.C.

Research Through, With and As Storying

Research Through, With and As Storying explores how Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars can engage with storying as a tool that disassembles conventions of research. The authors explore the concept of storying across different cultures, times and places, and discuss principles of storying and storying research, considering Indigenous, feminist and critical theory standpoints. Through the book, Phillips and Bunda provide an invitation to locate storying as a valuable ontological, epistemological and methodological contribution to the academy across disciplines, arguing that storying research gives voice to the marginalised in the academy. Providing rich and interesting coverage of the approaches to the field of storying research from Aboriginal and white Australian perspectives, this text seeks to enable a profound understanding of the significance of stories and storying. This book will prove valuable for scholars, students and practitioners who seek to develop alternate and creative contributions to the production of knowledge.
