Has the neuromuscular junction been over-exposed or is it perhaps already a closed book? I asked myself this at a recent International Congress when an American colleague complained that the Journal of Physiology had articles on nothing but the neuromuscular junction, while another colleague asked why I was editing a volume on a subject about which everything was already known. It is worrying to think that these views may be shared by other people. I hope that this volume will convince my two colleagues and other readers that the neuromuscular junction is very much alive and continues to attract the interest of many workers from a variety of fields; strange as it may seem, the synapse between a motor nerve ending and muscle fibre, with its relatively simple architecture, is one of the most inter esting sites in the body-I do hope we have done it justice. The various chapters of this volume present a cross section of knowledge as viewed by a group of 13 individuals, actively engaged in research. Multi-author volumes such as this are frequently criticised on the grounds that chapters or sec tions overlap. I believe that such criticium is only valid where the overlap is repetitious. Where it results in the reader having available discussions of material from differing stand-points, overlap becomes a valuable feature of this type of publication.

Globally, the demand for electricity is increasing significantly and thus there is a need for more power generation. As a result, environmental pollution from burning fossil fuels is accelerating climate change at an unprecedented pace, as evidenced by recent extreme weather events across the world. As such, several paradigm shifts in power and energy systems are happening to protect the environment, societies, and economies against climate change. As the world is planning for a future with low carbon emissions, today’s power system is transitioning from its existing traditional hierarchical structure to a more decentralized framework through innovative energy management techniques, such as peer-to-peer (P2P) sharing. Due to the potential benefits that P2P sharing can offer to electricity prosumers, consumers, and the grid, research, development, and pilot trials of P2P are advancing rapidly. To capture these developments in this emerging energy management paradigm, present in this monograph is a comprehensive review of various features of P2P sharing. To do so, first introduced is the network and market structures that are required to facilitate P2P sharing within a local community. Thereafter, a comprehensive overview of various challenges of P2P energy-sharing mechanisms at both virtual and physical layers is provided, followed by a discussion of technical approaches used in literature to address these challenges. Third, some emerging technological innovations that will be relevant to, and important for, the development of P2P sharing in future markets are introduced and discussed. Fourth, a summary of existing pilot P2P projects is provided, and this is followed by a summary of potential future research directions and a conclusion. Thus, by providing a holistic view of challenges and contributions to both virtual and physical layers of P2P energy systems simultaneously and in a structured way, this monograph delivers a comprehensive understanding of the core challenges that hinder the integration of P2P sharing in the current market model.

This book contains the proceedings of a symposium held at the College of Charleston. Charleston. South Carolina. USA. 16-20 June. 1986. The seed for this symposium arose from a group of physiologists. soil scientists and biochemists that met in Leningrad USSR in July 1975 at the 12th Botanical Conference in a Session organized by Professor B.B. Vartepetian. This group and others later conspired to contribute to a book entitled Plant Life in Anaerobic Environments (eds. D.D. Hook and R.M.M. Crawford. Ann Arbor Science. 1978). Several contributors to the book suggested in 1983 that a broad-scoped symposium on wetlands would be useful (a) in facilitating communication among the diverse research groups involved in wetlands research (b) in bringing researchers and managers together (c) and in presenting a comprehensive and balanced coverage on the status of ecology and management of wetlands from a global perspective. With this encouragement. the senior editor organized a planning committee that encompassed expertise from many disciplines of wetland scientists and managers. This committee, with input from their colleagues around the world, organized a symposium that addressed almost every aspect of wetland ecology and management.

The Fishes of the Western North Atlantic series, which began publication in the 1940s by Yale University’s Sears Foundation for Marine Research, was from its beginnings conceived to synthesize and make accessible the wealth of information in widely scattered published accounts of the fish fauna of the region for both the layman and the specialist, presenting critical reviews rather than compilations. These reference works are still considered valuable and of interest today to both general audiences and the academic community. As described in the Preface to the first volume, the series was “written on the premise that it should be useful to those in many walks of life—to those casually … interested …, to the sportsman …, to the fisherman …, as well as to the amateur ichthyologist and the professional scientist.” These books remain authoritative studies of the anadromous, estuarine, and marine fishes of the waters of the western North Atlantic from Hudson Bay southward to the Amazon, ranking as primary references for both amateurs and professionals interested in fishes, and as significant working tools for students of the sea.

This book concentrates on the epidemiology of corruption and disease transmission as a saturable interaction as well as case studies of infectious diseases of global public health concern, namely drug resistant TB, influenza and malaria. It gives the students and researchers in related areas ample information on disease epidemiology and transmission dynamics, and well-elaborated mathematics useful in analysing the proposed models. Great emphasis is not only placed on describing the models, but also on analysing and bringing out results of great epidemiological meaning for public health control and planning.

Impending famine and a terrifying rate of consumption of natural resources are vital issues which have focussed public interest in the ecologic, social and political problems of ever increasing overpopulation in many countries of the world. As well as the vast material and intellectual expenditure lavished on family planning and birth control, the past decade has seen an immense research effort in the elaboration of improved methods of fertility control, both for men and for women. During the same period, however, research into the causes of male fertility disorders has proceeded with equal intensity, and a number of promising therapeutic approaches have become the subject of clinical trials. The wish of an individual or of a couple to have offspring is an absolute which requires no further justification, and there can be few challenges to a physician as essential as the spouses' predicament in a childless marriage. Only with a special knowledge of the function, pathology and pathophysiology of the reproductive system is he properly equipped to meet that challenge.

This book describes the efforts of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes to save and restore Sãiçpálî or whitebark pine, which is now threatened with extinction from accelerating and intensifying effects of the climate crisis and disease. Often there is too little communication and exchange between Indigenous communities working on issues of cultural survival and restoration and scientists focused on their own research methodologies and approaches. On the Flathead Reservation, however, the disparate worlds are being brought together in a visionary effort to save whitebark pine, reflecting what is known as biocultural restoration.

Fifty-two readings on living in intentional Christian community to spark group discussion.Gold Medal Winner, 2017 Illumination Book Awards, Christian LivingSilver Medal Winner, 2017 Benjamin Franklin Award in Religion, Independent Book Publishers AssociationWhy, in an age of connectivity, are our lives more isolated and fragmented than ever? And what can be done about it? The answer lies in the hands of God’s people. Increasingly, today’s Christians want to be the church, to follow Christ together in daily life. From every corner of society, they are daring to step away from the status quo and respond to Christ’s call to share their lives more fully with one another and with others. As they take the plunge, they are discovering the rich, meaningful life that Jesus has in mind for all people, and pointing the church back to its original calling: to be a gathered, united community that demonstrates the transforming love of God.Of course, such a life together with others isn’t easy. The selections in this volume are, by and large, written by practitioners—people who have pioneered life in intentional community and have discovered in the nitty-gritty of daily life what it takes to establish, nurture, and sustain a Christian community over the long haul.Whether you have just begun thinking about communal living, are already embarking on sharing life with others, or have been part of a community for many years, the pieces in this collection will encourage, challenge, and strengthen you. The book’s fifty-two chapters can be read one a week to ignite meaningful group discussion.Contributors include: John F. Alexander, Eberhard Arnold, J. Your birthplace, nationality, or external circumstances should not prevent you from being the best version of yourself. Whatever the storm in your life, you could get through it, change, thrive, and succeed. There are no "shithole countries." There are only shithole values, mindsets, strategies, and broken systems that lead to failure and disaster. This method is simple, direct, and genuine. It is centered on the notion of change, system improvement, and values. When the news reported that President Donald Trump qualified Haiti, African Countries, and Salvador as shithole countries, it sparked Dr. Demes to write this book, "Shithole Countries or Shithole Values? 7 Steps to Change and Thrive in Any Environment," and share his systematic approach to change. When he was a little boy, Dr. Demes lived in extreme poverty, in one of the most impoverished Haitian villages. His dream was to rise above his circumstances, help others out of the poverty trap, and teach them how to thrive in the middle of chaos and deprivation.Today, he is a medical doctor and has a master's degree in Public Health from the Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the School of Public Health at the University of Montreal. Dr. Demes has worked as a medical doctor, consultant, public health specialist, professor, and researcher. His work has taken him to Africa and Haiti.Dr. Demes found a way to rise above the storms in his life and wants to help you do the same. His life is a living testimony of the power of love, faith, hope, and surrender. By implementing his evidence-based strategies, you will not only improve the quality of your life, but you will also thrive. It's possible with change. But change is scary. Change is difficult. However, change is inevitable and necessary if you want to improve your life.Successful people know how to adapt and change. They replace shithole values with resilient internal and external skills that guide their success. These simple steps, illustrated with Dr. Demes' personal life stories, show you how to thrive in the middle of chaos, trials, or tribulations. If you want to move from where you are to where you want to be, let Dr. Demes guide you. He combines in a unique way the scientific with the spiritual. Here are the steps outlined in greater detail in the book: Self-assess your lifePrioritizeDiscover your life purpose and set goalsAdapt to your environmentIntegrate and apply a coherent set of valuesImprove your life dimensionsIntroduce change into your life systematically"Shithole Countries or Shithole Values" is your roadmap to success and well-being whatever your external circumstances.Take action today to change your life for the better and transform the lives of those around you, too.
