Modeled after Mary: A Feminist Collaborative Inquiry Exploring Mary as a Heuristic Concept for Women in the Episcopal Church
The Virgin Mary, The Blessed Mother, The Mother of Jesus, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Czestochowa, Our Lady of Good Help, Queen of Heaven-these are but a sampling of the names attributed to a peasant woman named Mary of Nazareth in the Christian Gospel tradition. For many, she is a person of biblical history, a continuation of goddess mythology across cultures, and a figure of veneration in the Roman Catholic Church. While Mary has traditionally been a symbol for the passive obedience, purity and submission to the role of motherhood for women, a growing number of feminist scholars and theologians understand her as having a prophetic voice in the struggle for human liberation, and that she also serves as a symbol/metaphor of the Divine Feminine in Western Christianity. Since Protestant Christianity has generally reduced Mary's role and place in the church to liturgical celebrations at Christmas and Easter, the purpose of this study is to examine the Marian tradition in its various contexts-in history, biblical scholarship, theology, as well as art and iconography-and explore the relationship between Episcopal women and their understanding of Our Lady. Based in a theoretical framework of hermeneutics (specifically that of fidelity and suspicion), I engage in a feminist collaborative inquiry which explores who Mary is as a heuristic concept. This study includes journal entries and group conversations with a sampling of women from The Episcopal Church, explores my own journey with Mary as an Episcopal priest, and concludes with the development of new iconography that speaks to the various ways Episcopal women look to her as a model.
The Caring for a Loved One with Mary: A Seven Sorrows Prayer Companion
Completely occupied by the constant care necessary for her son's medically complex situation, Theresa Kiser struggled to reconcile with the physical, emotional, social, and mental tolls it took on her family. But when she stumbled upon the devotion of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, she was surprised - and deeply relieved - to discover that Our Lady walked this caregiving road before her. The Seven Sorrows devotion nourished her soul with comfort, companionship, and grace at a time when she needed it most.In Caring for a Loved One with Mary, you'll walk step-by-step through the Seven Sorrows of Mary, an ancient yet lesser-known Marian devotion. Theresa's story and the experiences of other Catholic caregivers demonstrate that times of suffering and limitation do not indicate a departure from God's plan. Rather, they are how he brings us to his joy, as he did for Our Lady.Mary shows us that when life doesn't go as planned, we are not alone. Moreover, our sorrows when caring for a loved one may be the very means by which we are to follow Christ, just as they were for the Blessed Mother. We know that Mary's sorrows were not final. For her, everything turned to joy. In God's timing and in God's way, our sorrows will, too.

War at a Distance

War at a Distance

Mary A. Favret

Princeton University Press

What does it mean to live during wartime away from the battle zone? What is it like for citizens to go about daily routines while their country sends soldiers to kill and be killed across the globe? Timely and thought-provoking, War at a Distance considers how those left on the home front register wars and wartime in their everyday lives, particularly when military conflict remains removed from immediate perception, available only through media forms. Looking back over two centuries, Mary Favret locates the origins of modern wartime in the Napoleonic era and describes how global military operations affected the British populace, as the nation's army and navy waged battles far from home for decades. She reveals that the literature and art produced in Britain during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries obsessively cultivated means for feeling as much as understanding such wars, and established forms still relevant today. Favret examines wartime literature and art as varied as meditations on the Iliad, the history of meteorology, landscape painting in India, and popular poetry in newspapers and periodicals; she locates the embedded sense of war and dislocation in works ranging from Austen, Coleridge, and Wordsworth to Woolf, Stevens, and Sebald; and she contemplates how literature provides the public with methods for responding to violent calamities happening elsewhere. Bringing to light Romanticism's legacy in reflections on modern warfare, this book shows that war's absent presence affects home in deep and irrevocable ways.
Girls Gone Wise In A World Gone Wild

Girls Gone Wise In A World Gone Wild

Mary A. Kassian

Inundated by popular culture, many women have lost their bearings and no longer trust the internal compass that intuitively affirms those things that are good, true, and noble about womanhood. As Jesus' favorite and most powerful teaching tactic was the parable, it is appropriate that Mary Kassian walks the reader through the compelling tale of the wild versus wise woman found in Proverbs 7. By using 20 points of contrast, she helps readers discern wild from wise, saucy from biblically savvy, and more. Girls Gone Wise in a World Gone Wild will captivate, convict, and challenge women to become decreasingly worldly and increasingly godly, and it will equip them with truth for that journey. Includes questions for personal reflection at the end of each chapter
