Fluid Geographies

Fluid Geographies

K. Maria D. Lane

THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO PRESS
2024
sidottu
An unprecedented analysis of the origin story of New Mexico’s modern water management system. Maria Lane’s Fluid Geographies traces New Mexico’s transition from a community-based to an expert-led system of water management during the pre-statehood era. To understand this major shift, Lane carefully examines the primary conflict of the time, which pitted Indigenous and Nuevomexicano communities, with their long-established systems of irrigation management, against Anglo-American settlers, who benefitted from centralized bureaucratic management of water. The newcomers’ system eventually became settled law, but water disputes have continued throughout the district courts of New Mexico’s Rio Grande watershed ever since. Using a fine-grained analysis of legislative texts and nearly two hundred district court cases, Lane analyzes evolving cultural patterns and attitudes toward water use and management in a pivotal time in New Mexico’s history. Illuminating complex themes for a general audience, Fluid Geographies helps readers understand how settler colonialism constructed a racialized understanding of scientific expertise and legitimized the dispossession of nonwhite communities in New Mexico.
Geographies of Mars

Geographies of Mars

One of the first maps of Mars, published by an Italian astronomer in 1877, with its pattern of canals, fueled belief in intelligent life-forms on the distant red planet - a hope that continued into the 1960s. Although the Martian canals have long since been dismissed as a famous error in the history of science, K. Maria D. Lane argues that there was nothing accidental about these early interpretations. Indeed, she argues, the construction of Mars as an incomprehensibly complex and engineered world both reflected and challenged dominant geopolitical themes during a time of major cultural, intellectual, political, and economic transition in the Western world. "Geographies of Mars" telescopes in on a critical period in the development of the geographical imagination, when European imperialism was at its zenith and American expansionism had begun in earnest. Astronomers working in the new observatories of the American Southwest or in the remote heights of the South American Andes were inspired, Lane finds, by their own physical surroundings, and they used representations of the Earth's arid landscapes to establish credibility for their observations of Mars. With this simple shift to the geographer's point of view, Lane deftly explains some of the most perplexing stances on Mars taken by familiar protagonists such as Percival Lowell, Alfred Russel Wallace, and Lester Frank Ward. A highly original exploration of geography's spatial dimensions at the beginning of the twentieth century, "Geographies of Mars" offers a new view of the mapping of far-off worlds.

This is the only collection of its kind to offer an inside view of life and work in contemporary nursing homes with the purpose of developing a theory of the culture of long term care. The anthropological research in nursing homes presented here produces a seldom seen native view of patients, staff, and the day-to-day workings of American nursing homes. The use of ethnographic methods penetrates the reality barriers found in industry descriptions, muck-raking discourse, and general societal aversion toward nursing homes. The tensions found between and within staff culture and patient culture are explored in terms of adaptations to institutional life in the context of current policy and the larger American ageist culture.

A framework for weaving common threads into an artful solution Rather than buying individual books about professional learning communities (PLCs), differentiated instruction (DI), and Response to Intervention (RTI), invest wisely in one resource that synthesizes all three. The text uses a tapestry analogy to weave these critical topics together to form a comprehensive framework for achieving continuous school improvement. The result is a stronger foundation for administrators' leadership direction and teachers' instructional decisions based on: - Utilizing PLCs as the framework for sharing new strategies and understandings - Discussing data collected through assessments - Evaluating data against benchmarks Included are walk-through checklists, learning-style surveys, examples, and vignettes that illustrate practical strategies for integrating DI and RTI and collaborating with colleagues to assess student learning and adapt instruction and interventions. This timely resource efficiently provides all the information you need to optimize instruction for outstanding results.
Simple Spells With Playing Cards: Shuffle An Ordinary Deck Of Playing Cards For Love, Luck And Immediate Prosperity
MARIA D'ANDREA TELLS YOU HOW TO SEE THE FUTURE AND CAST SPELLS WITH AN ORDINARY DECK OF PLAYING CARDS NOW YOU CAN GO BEYOND CARD GAMES OF MERE "CHANCE" AND INTO THE INFINITE The origin of playing cards is shrouded in the mists of time. Some historians trace them to the ancient Egyptians, others to the Chinese or medieval Italy, still others to the Romany gypsies seen so often in pop culture portrayals of fortune tellers. Wherever they come from, an ordinary deck of 52 playing cards are not mere "playthings" but are instead a mystical link to the great unknown. Anyone can master their use with diligent practice -and being born with supernatural powers is not required THE CARDS ARE LIKE LIVING ENTITIES Learn how individual cards are like living entities with personalities and traits all their own. The king of clubs, for example, is humane, upright and affectionate, while the king of diamonds is continually fuming in his stubborn, vengeful wrath. The cards form a cast of characters enacting a drama that can give insight into your future and alert you to dangers you never previously imagined. SATURDAY NIGHT POKER WITH THE BOYS WILL NEVER BE THE SAME But one doesn't have to passively accept the fortune meted out by the seemingly "random" way the cards fall. Read Maria D'Andrea's spells involving the use of playing cards. She explains how the careful laying out of ordinary cards, when combined with the use of candles, incense and the recitation of ritual words, can make the "higher powers" do your bidding. You are in control of your future with Maria's methods and are not subject to the whims of unseen forces working through artful pieces of cardboard. This is a golden opportunity to gaze and control the future - from a perspective of self-determination - that you can't afford to miss After reading this book you will think of playing cards in a totally different way every time you go to shuffle a deck. Saturday night poker with the "boys" will soon take on a variable meaning.

The goal of this book is to summarise the recent advances in carbon nanotubes as a new material for electrochemical sensors. Since their discovery in 1991, carbon nanotubes have received considerable attention in different fields. Their special geometry and unique electronic, mechanical, chemical and thermal properties make them a very attractive material for the design of electrochemical biosensors. The first application of carbon nanotubes in the preparation of a sensor was reported by Britto in 1996. Since then, an increasing number of publications involving sensors based on carbon nanotubes (either single or multi-wall) for substrates like glucose, lactate, alcohols, phenols, neurotransmitters, aminoacids, proteins, carbohydrates among others, have been reported. This fact demonstrates the usefulness of carbon nanotubes for the development of electrochemical sensors. The advantages of carbon nanotubes for promoting electron transfer reactions -with special emphasis in those involving biomolecules, the different methodologies for incorporating carbon nanotubes in sensors (either suspended in solutions, in polymeric films or in composite matrices), the analytical performance of the resulting biosensors as well as future prospects are discussed in this book.

This third novel by Jane Austen; Mansfield Park; has brought about a drastic change not previously seen in other works by the author. Mansfield Park highlights more serious issues such as religion, slavery, and politics. In the most eloquent tone, Jane manages to take seemingly unattractive topics and meld them into a powerful story full of brilliance. This beautifully illustrated 200th Anniversary Edition captures the essence of Austen's original work, while also including the body of illustrations first introduced in 1908 by artist C.E. Brock. In keeping with its original format, Queensbridge decided to include all three original volumes.(c) 2014 Queensbridge Publishing
