Die Zeit um 1900 zahlt zu den am besten erforschten Epochen der deutschsprachigen Literatur. Umso mehr erstaunt es, dass die spezifische Darstellung der Heiligen Maria Magdalena im Werk reprasentativer Autoren wie Richard Dehmel und Johannes Schlaf bislang unerkannt geblieben ist. Die Studie weist nach, dass in der literarischen Lebensreform unter den Vorzeichen von religioser Sinnsuche, zeittypischem Lebenspathos und sakralisierter Sinnenliebe der christliche Magdalenenstoff umgewertet und mit weltanschaulichem Wissen amalgamiert wird. Im Rekurs auf bildkunstlerische Werke werden gleichzeitig die kontraren Weiblichkeitstypen von femme fatale und femme fragile miteinander versohnt. Die 'Heilige Hure' erlangt so den Status einer mannlichen Phantasie, die dem Verfuhrten Erlosung gewahrt, indem sie ihn an der Alleinheit des emphatisch beschworenen Lebens teilhaben lasst. Beim Nachweis dieser Resakralisierung Maria Magdalenas zur 'modernen' Heiligen bezieht sich die Studie auf aktuelle Positionen der Intertextualitats-, Gender- und Sakularisierungsforschung.
