Imagery and Text, Second Edition extends the first edition’s unified theory of cognition in literacy from the perspective of Dual Coding Theory (DCT), one of the most influential and empirically sound theories of cognition ever developed. This theory provides a comprehensive, systematic account of all major aspects of literacy including decoding, comprehension, and response in reading and composing in writing. The Second Edition updates DCT as a scientific theory, a cognitive theory, an embodied theory, and a constructivist theory of literacy. New content includes a detailed account of the decoding process and its integral connection to comprehension, a new program of research on DCT in composing text, a review of neuroscientific support, and increased attention to multimedia literacy, socio-cultural influences, and recent educational applications. More than any other theory, DCT explains how both verbal and nonverbal cognition are woven together through all aspects of literacy. Written in concise chapters with illustrative examples, Imagery and Text is approachable for both students and advanced scholars in the field of literacy.

Synchronicity

Synchronicity

pokkari
Carl Jung coined the term "synchronicity" to describe meaningful coincidences that conventional notions of time and causality cannot explain. Working with the great quantum physicist Wolfgang Pauli, Jung sought to reveal these coincidences as phenomena that involve mind and matter, science and spirit, thus providing rational explanations for parapsychological events like telepathy, precognition, and intuition. Synchronicity examines the work of Jung and Pauli, as well as noted scientists Werner Heisenberg and David Bohm identifies the phenomena in ancient and modern mythologies, particularly the Greek legend of Hermes the Trickster and illustrates it with engaging anecdotes from everyday life and literature.

The book covers everything from hillforts to aircraft carriers and includes the castles, battle sites, ships and aircraft that have witnessed the changing character of warfare. Ending with how victory and sacrifice are commemorated and remembered, England’s Military Heritage from the Air is a tribute to the courage, skill and endurance of the people who have suffered yet prevailed.
Defending Scilly

Defending Scilly

Historic England

The Isles of Scilly are renowned for their natural beauty, wild flowers and temperate climate, but there is another reason to visit these paradise islands. Since the 16th century they have been in the frontline of this country’s military defences and successive generations of fortifications have survived in Scilly, unmatched in any other location around Britain. This unrivalled survival was due to the lack of pressure to develop the islands and happily because the feared enemy rarely attacked. However, there is another threat to this precious heritage, the power of the sea. William Borlase in the mid-18th century recorded how much of the islands’ history had succumbed to rising sea level, and today increasingly turbulent weather patterns may be accelerating the process of coastal erosion. This book celebrates the unique survival of military fortifications on the islands, but it also serves to illustrate the value and vulnerability of the whole country’s coastal heritage. Like King Canute, we cannot turn back the sea, but we can celebrate these precious survivals from the colourful history of our island nation.

Using clear language the authors hope to take developers to another level in administering their SQL Server. In this text Allan Mitchell and Mark Allison show developers how to create tools which will let them do their jobs easier and faster. SQL-DMO is a feature rich library that can be manipulated to do things that simply are not possible using the standard tool set of Microsoft SQL Server. Here, Mitchell and Allison show developers how to do it in a way that is not masked by "techno-babble". Instead, they write in a manner that is easy to understand and clearly explains the points necessary to advance in programming SQL Server.

Inimgeograafia alused. Koostanud ja toimetanud Hannes Palang ja Tiit TammaruAutorid: Eiki Berg, Karin Dean, Raul Eamets, Mark Gortfelder, Olle Järv, Kadi Kalm, Kadri Kasemets, Kadri Leetmaa, Raili Nugin, Taavi Pae, Hannes Palang, Tarmo Pikner, Allan Puur, Anne Põder, Garri Raagmaa, Rein Raud, Siiri Silm, Tiit Tammaru, Keiu Telve, Elen-Maarja Trell, Tauri Tuvikene.

Forests and Insects

Chapman and Hall
1997
sidottu
This book covers the full breadth of forest entomology. It combines the work of forest entomologists working on the impact and management of forest pests with those involved in diversity assessment and conservation of insects in forests. Forests and Insects demonstrates that both these disciplines demand an understanding of population and community biology. The book covers such topics as colonization of trees by insects, population dynamics of forest insects, insect natural enemies, the effects of climate change and pollution on forest pests, spatial variation in the abundance of insects, the mineralization of carbon by termites, the impact of herbivorous insects, and the conservation of forest insect diversity, including the effects of forest fragmentation and deforestation. This Royal Entomological Society Symposium volume will be of great interest to all agricultural and forest entomologists, population and community biologists, pest management specialists and anyone concerned with the conservation of forest biodiversity.

Resonance Radiation and Excited Atoms

Cambridge University Press
2009
pokkari
First printed in 1934, this book gives a critical survey of the principles and limitations of methods for studying resonance radiation that is the re-emission of absorbed radiation without change of wavelength and of the theoretical interpretation of the phenomenon. At the time of first publication, physicists had come to the limit of the then existing techniques in the field and the book was more useful to astronomers who were interested in line shapes existing in the spectra of stars. In past years other fields and techniques have developed for which the information in this book is of interest. These fields are: (1) those having to do with the determination of spins, magnetic moments and hyperfine structure separations by the methods of 'optical pumping' and 'optical double resonance': (2) optical MASERS; and (3) nuclear resonance absorption of gamma rays.
