Mark Sanders' Conditions of Grace: New and Selected Poems brings together the best work from a thirty-year career. These selections include powerful lyrics and narratives, metaphorical and fearless observations of the landscapes of region and heart, and a music that is at both subtle and alluring. "Mark Sanders writes, he says, in 'plain speech for a plain people.'But the complexities of his social and familial involvements, his awareness of self and others, mean that the lives rendered here are anything but plain. They are ornery, funny, bedeviled, passionate, private, and performative - I mean, the people and Sanders' poems. This poet is of the same important tribe as Ted Kooser and Jo McDougall, Dave Etter and Jim Barnes, in tune with a type of Midwestern and democratic rhetoric - 'plain' but dramatic, public but precise." - David Baker, editor of Kenyon Review "Mark Sanders is a keen observer, a careful translator of experience and an archivist of the actual. He can 'turn sharp on a country thought' or channel Wallace Stevens, and his Conditions of Grace displays and utters a vital world of hawks, horses and humane humans either wrestling with sorrow or 'downing shots of Comfort.' His poems are deft and significant, and I'm betting most readers who find their way to this book will not be eager to find their way out.Instead, they'll want to join Sanders as, 'We stand our furious ground.'" - R. Data Contracts

Poor data quality can cause major problems for data teams, from breaking revenue-generating data pipelines to losing the trust of data consumers. Despite the importance of data quality, many data teams still struggle to avoid these issues—especially when their data is sourced from upstream workflows outside of their control. The solution: data contracts. Data contracts enable high-quality, well-governed data assets by documenting expectations of the data, establishing ownership of data assets, and then automatically enforcing these constraints within the CI/CD workflow. This practical book introduces data contract architecture with a clear definition of data contracts, explains why the data industry needs them, and shares real-world use cases of data contracts in production. In addition, you'll learn how to implement components of the data contract architecture and understand how they're used in the data lifecycle. Finally, you'll build a case for implementing data contracts in your organization.Authors Chad Sanderson and Mark Freeman will help you:Explore real-world applications of data contracts within the industryUnderstand how to apply each component of this architecture, such as CI/CD, monitoring, version control data, and moreLearn how to implement data contracts using open source toolsExamine ways to resolve data quality issues using data contract architectureMeasure the impact of implementing a data contract in your organizationDevelop a strategy to determine how data contracts will be used in your organization

Data warehouses and data lakes each evolved to meet a set of specific technology and business needs and values. As organizations often need both, there has been increasing demand for convergence of both technologies. Thus, the lakehouse was born. A lakehouse couples the cost benefits and versatility of data lakes with the data structure and high-performance data management capabilities of data warehouses into a single unified data store that can be consistently and efficiently accessed, governed, analyzed and consumed by AI applications. Lakehouses are designed to help organizations get more from their existing investment in data warehouses and data lakes. It supports the existence of both through access to and management of a larger variety of combined data for increased flexibility, enhancing business intelligence and AI initiatives by revealing deeper insights into an organization’s data estates. This book is intended for technical communities, such as developers, data scientists, and C-level IT executives, as well as business communities, such as business managers requiring self-service analytics / AI, and C-level business executives.
Sterling A. Brown's A Negro Looks at the South

Sterling A. Brown's A Negro Looks at the South

Using oral history and the printed word, Sterling A. Brown set out during the Second World War to capture the response of African Americans, primarily living in the South, to America's involvement in the war and how it affected them. These responses, brought together in extended, non-fiction essays of many different types, illustrate the diversity of opinions in the Black South about the war and the war period in America. For nearly sixteen years, the excerpts that were never published languished in Brown's manuscript collection at Howard University. Now, for the first time, all of the completed pieces of unpublished writings are combined with the few published sections into the book that Brown envisioned. The legacy Brown left us is not only a superb portrait of the way in which African Americans of the mid-century talked and lived; he also provided a methodology that oral and written historians will find extremely useful. This is clearly a document from another time, as its now outdated title reminds us, but it reveals a world that still informs our sense of ourself as a nation. In fact, it is an unforgettable history, which Brown has cast in a bright, elucidating new light.

In 1965, a family-reunification policy for admitting immigrants to the United States replaced a system that chose immigrants based on their national origin. With this change, a 40-year hiatus in Asian immigration ended. Today, over three-quarters of US immigrants originate from Asia and Latin America. Two issues that dominate discussions of US immigration policy are the progress of post-reform immigrants and their contributions to the US economy. This book focuses on the earnings and human capital investment of Asian immigrants to the US after 1965. In addition, it provides a primer on studying immigrant economic assimilation, by explaining economists’ methodology to measure immigrant earnings growth and the challenges with this approach. The book also illustrates strategies to more fully use census data such as how to measure family income and how to use “panel data” that is embedded in the census. The book is a historical study as well as an extremely timely work froma policy angle. The passage of the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act set the United States apart among economically developed countries due to the weight given to family unification. Based on analyses by economists—which suggest that the quality of immigrants to the US fell after the 1965 law—policymakers have called for fundamental changes in the US system to align it with the immigration systems of other countries. This book offers an alternative view point by proposing a richer model that incorporates investments in human capital by immigrants and their families. It challenges the conventional model in three ways: First, it views the decline in immigrants’ entry earnings after 1965 as due to investment in human capital, not to permanently lower “quality.” Second, it adds human capital investment and earnings growth after entry to the model. And finally, by taking investments by family members into account, it challenges the policy recommendation that immigrants should be selected for their occupational qualifications rather than family connections.

Since 1985, scientists have been documenting a hypoxic zone in the Gulf of Mexico each year. The hypoxic zone, an area of low dissolved oxygen that cannot s- port marine life, generally manifests itself in the spring. Since marine species either die or ee the hypoxic zone, the spread of hypoxia reduces the available habitat for marine species, which are important for the ecosystem as well as commercial and recreational shing in the Gulf. Since 2001, the hypoxic zone has averaged 2 1 16,500 km during its peak summer months , an area slightly larger than the state 2 2 of Connecticut, and ranged from a low of 8,500 km to a high of 22,000 km . To address the hypoxia problem, the Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient Task Force (or Task Force) was formed to bring together represen- tives from federal agencies, states, and tribes to consider options for responding to hypoxia. The Task Force asked the White House Of ce of Science and Technology Policy to conduct a scienti c assessment of the causes and consequences of Gulf hypoxia through its Committee on Environment and Natural Resources (CENR).
