This collection fills the need for a resource that adequately conceptualizes the place of non-European histories in the larger narrative of world history. These essays were selected with special emphasis on their comparative outlook. The chapters range from the British Empire (India, Egypt, Palestine) to Indonesia, French colonialism (Brittany and Algeria), South Africa, Fiji, and Japanese imperialism. By five months of life, babies can raise their heads when in a supine position on the floor. This common and expected progression in controlling the head is just one example of early human motor development. Human motor performance is one of the fundamental aspects of the sensory-motor system. Many questions appeal to researchers in the field of movement science and other areas such as neuroscience, psychology, physiology, education, paediatrics, and geriatrics. For example, how do humans learn and control movements? This book follows the improvement of motor skills in childhood as a function of enriched experiences or maturation, as well as illustrating how developmental studies on motor performance increase our understanding of perceptual-motor skills.

Fans today may be surprised to learn Scott Russell Sanders was previously one of the brightest science-fiction newcomers of the 1980s. In Dancing in Dreamtime, he returns to his roots, exploring both inner and outer space in a speculative collection of short stories. At a time when humankind faces unprecedented, global-scale challenges from climate change, loss of biodiversity, dwindling vital resources, and widespread wars, this collection of planetary tales will strike a poignant chord with the reader. Sanders has created worlds where death tolls rise due to dream deprivation, where animals only exist in mechanical form, and where poisoned air forces people to live in biodomes. Never before has Sanders's writing been so relevant and never before have the lessons in these stories been so important.

The problem remains: students in schools across the United States are not only bullying each other but are killing each other. This book provides a foundation for the study of school violence, beginning with an analysis of the shootings at Columbine and going on to discuss all forms of aggression in schools. The authors provide a history of school violence in America, theories to explain bullying, and teachers' perceptions of this violence - and suggest ways that teachers and other school personnel can predict, control, and prevent outbursts of violence. Also included are discussions on the effects of the media on school violence, as well as the criminal justice system's responses. This book is an excellent resource for courses in criminal justice, teacher education, and all youth workers and counselors in schools and the community.

After a quick glance at the plant floor, it is very easy to see the industrial automation industry interoperates with other functions within the enterprise. Trying to keep up with changing technologies, however, is never easy and the industrial automation environment is no exception. Whether you are a student just starting out or are a top-level executive or manager well-versed in one domain, but have limited knowledge of the industrial automation industry, it’s easy to find yourself adrift in this evolving industry. That is where this easy-to-read book comes in; it provides a basic functional understanding in the field of industrial automation. In an effort to understand this industry, the authors break down the barriers and confusion surrounding the technical details and terminology used in this converging field. This book features four peer-reviewed reviews on the development of fungicide resistance in agriculture. The first chapter examines how pathogens develop resistance to fungicides and reviews the ways to detect and measure resistance. The chapter also discusses mechanisms of resistance, such as target site mutation and oppression and multi-drug resistance. The second chapter builds on research covered in the first chapter and reviews the development of resistance in cereal pathogens, before presenting and evaluating a variety of anti-resistance strategies. Case studies of how data from field trials have helped illustrate the impact of different control strategies are also included. The third chapter provides a detailed overview of the use of fungicides as an effective and economic tool to control plant diseases. The chapter considers the successful development of fungicides, as well as the challenges facing future fungicide development within a more holistic and sustainable system of food production. The final chapter considers the current status of global wheat production, the impact of crop loss on food security and the emergence of the current regulatory environment surrounding pesticides. The current status of the global fungicide market and some of the major issues in its future longevity is also discussed.

This SpringerBrief provides an overview of ultrasonic emulsification and an update on recent advances in developing stable emulsions for the creation of novel drugs and functional foods, with a focus on bioactive delivery in these products.Emulsification is the process of combining two or more immiscible liquids to form a semi-stable mixture. These two liquids generally consist of an organic (oil) phase and an aqueous (water) phase that is stabilized by the addition of an emulsifier. Most common emulsions are of the oil-in-water (O/W) type, but can also be of water-in-oil (W/O) or even multiple emulsion types (i.e. double emulsions) in the form of water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) or oil-in-water-in-oil (O/W/O) phases. The formation of an emulsion requires input of energy to distribute the disperse phase in the continuous phase in small-sized droplets that are able to resist instability. There is great interest in the use of ultrasound to produce emulsions, as it is able to do sorelatively efficiently and effectively compared to existing techniques such as rotor stator, high-pressure homogenization and microfluidization. The interaction of ultrasound with the hydrocolloids and biopolymers that are often used to stabilize emulsions can offer advantages such as improved stability or greater control of formed droplet size distributions.

In 1896 the Prussian Ministry of Education requested a report to be written about the state of higher education in the United States in order to evaluate developments in academia in the USA. The Berlin minister's aide Friedrich Althoff commissioned the report from economist Prof. Dr. Johannes Conrad (Halle) who had published an empirically oriented history of universities in Germany a decade earlier. Conrad was particularly qualified to write such a report also because he had been the teacher of many American students in Germany, among them Simon Patten who upon his return to the US helped found the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. In his report Conrad presents a brief sketch of education in America at primary and secondary level and then analyzes the structure of higher education from the top level of organization to methods of teaching in the classroom. He pays special attention to women in higher education, the role of sports, and the efficiency of university libraries. But he also observes living expenses for students and discovers that American students spend more time in libraries than students at his Vereinigte Friedrichs-Universit t in Halle. This edition presents Conrad's report in German and English and has experts analyze it in its context.

The pending expiration of the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA) of 2002 is the impetus for this assessment of how TRIA redistributes terrorism losses. The authors find that the role of taxpayers is expected to be minimal in all but very rare cases and that, even with TRIA in place, a high fraction of losses would go uninsured in each of the attack scenarios examined.

As Australian cities face uncertain water futures, what insights can the history of Aboriginal and settler relationships with water yield? Residents have come to expect reliable, safe, and cheap water, but natural limits and the costs of maintaining and expanding water networks are at odds with forms and cultures of urban water use. Cities in a Sunburnt Country is the first comparative study of the provision, use, and social impact of water and water infrastructure in Australia's five largest cities. Drawing on environmental, urban, and economic history, this co-authored book challenges widely held assumptions, both in Australia and around the world, about water management, consumption, and sustainability. From the 'living water' of Aboriginal cultures to the rise of networked water infrastructure, the book invites us to take a long view of how water has shaped our cities, and how urban water systems and cultures might weather a warming world.
