Political Economy, Institutions and Virtue

Political Economy, Institutions and Virtue

This book engages with a radical critique of the modern state and the contemporary economic order: Alasdair MacIntyre’s ‘revolutionary Aristotelianism’ project. Central to this critique is the idea that the moral norms that markets and states tend to reproduce or reinforce are an obstacle to the development of practical judgement. The book outlines MacIntyre’s theory of practical reason and discusses some of the institutional arrangements that can be derived from it. It also explores the growing body of literature which has started to examine the extent to which alternative forms of social organisation might be more compatible with MacIntyre’s account of the virtues. This literature includes various proposals for alternative political and economic arrangements, ranging from certain forms of market socialism to the promotion of different forms of mutual and cooperative enterprises. Finally, the book offers an account of the type of institutional analysis required for the advancement of the revolutionary Aristotelianism project. This is achieved by showing how some key features of the Bloomington School of political economy are not only compatible with MacIntyre’s political philosophy, but also that a synthesis between neo- Aristotelian moral philosophy and the work of the Bloomington School offers a robust alternative for revolutionary Aristotelians. Thus, the book defends the idea that MacIntyre’s account of human flourishing is more likely to be realised, although imperfectly, in a polycentric social order. This book will be of interest to social scientists working in questions of political economy as well as political and moral philosophers.

Sustainability accounting and accountability is fundamental in the pursuit of low-carbon and less unsustainable societies. Highlighting that accounting, organisations and economic systems are intertwined with sustainability, this leading text discusses how sustainability accounting and accountability broaden the spectrum of information used in organisational decision-making and in evaluating organisational success. The authors show how sustainability accounting can prove to be transformative, but only if critical questions are sufficiently addressed.Drawing on the most recent research and topical practical insights, this fourth edition has been updated to reflect the contemporary developments in the area, especially topics relating to sustainability reporting and development in the financial markets. This book also highlights the role accounting plays in key sustainability issues through dedicated chapters on climate, water, biodiversity, human rights and economic inequality. Each chapter is supplemented with practical examples and academic reading lists to allow in-depth engagement.Sustainability Accounting and Accountability walks the reader through a spectrum of themes which are essential for all accountants and organisations. It helps the reader to understand why our traditional accounting techniques and systems are not sufficient for navigating the contemporary sustainability challenges our societies are facing. This key book will serve as an essential resource for undergraduate and postgraduate instructors and students, providing an entry point to sustainability accounting and accountability, and will also be a vital book for researchers.

Integrating Narrative Identity in Suicidology
Integrating Narrative Identity in Suicidology examines the pivotal role of stories in forming our identities and how, when those stories break down, suicidality can emerge. While addressing universal themes within suicidology, the book also draws on specific Canadian contributions. These insights reflect Canada's diverse socio-cultural landscape and its unique approach to mental health challenges. Canadian research and practices offer valuable perspectives that enhance our understanding of narrative identity’s role in mental health. By integrating these contributions, the book not only enriches the dialogue around suicidality but also illustrates how localized insights can have global relevance. Presented here is not merely an academic treatise but a practical guide for mental health professionals who are keen to apply principles of narrative identity and story reconstruction. It provides a method to help those adrift reconnect with their stories, offering a renewed sense of hope and a redefined identity, thereby restoring their place in the world.

In this Element and its accompanying second Element, A Practical Introduction to Regression Discontinuity Designs: Extensions, Matias Cattaneo, Nicolás Idrobo, and Rociìo Titiunik provide an accessible and practical guide for the analysis and interpretation of regression discontinuity (RD) designs that encourages the use of a common set of practices and facilitates the accumulation of RD-based empirical evidence. In this Element, the authors discuss the foundations of the canonical Sharp RD design, which has the following features: (i) the score is continuously distributed and has only one dimension, (ii) there is only one cutoff, and (iii) compliance with the treatment assignment is perfect. In the second Element, the authors discuss practical and conceptual extensions to this basic RD setup.
