Matthias Wittig turns pictures into brainteasers. A photo that at first glance looks like a casual snapshot, a frozen moment in time, sometimes conceals an entire storyline. Wittig evidently has an eye for the comically grotesque. Ambiguity seems to hold a fascination for him, as do the odd details that do not quite fit into the picture, thereby turning it into a story. This kind of ambiguity can be spooky and unsettling, but also imbued with humour and comical undertones. However, it is not only individual photos that seem enigmatic, but also the order in which they appear in the book. For what at first looks like a hidden connection often reveals itself to be an arrangement of surfaces and strange, unexpected colour gradients that unravel into random chaos. Matthias Hafenreffer (1561 - 1619) var från 1592 professor i Tübingen både i teologiska ämnen och i matematik. Han hörde till den würtembergska traditionen, som både före och efter honom haft ett särskilt stort inflytande på svensk teologi och fromhetstradition, med namn som Johann Albrecht Bengel och Magnus Friedrich Roos. En förkortad version av Hafenreffers arbete Compendium doctrinae coelestis - Kompendium om den himmelska läran - utkom 1612. Denna utgåva fick stor betydelse i svensk teologihistoria och i 1600-talets bildningsväsen. Biskopen i Skara, Jesper Swedberg, uppskattade honom och översatte kompendiet i förkortad form för de skolelever som hade svårt för latinet och använde den latinska texten regelmässigt som underlag för disputationerna vid prästmötena. Nu, nära 400 år efter första upplagan av kompendiet, utkommer det i översättning till svenska. Boken ger en elementär och kortfattad redovisning av de bibliska grunder, som den kristna tron bygger påoch ställer frågor till.

At first glance, the paintings of Matthias Dornfeld might strike us as na ve or even primitive. However, his still lifes, flower and animal depictions, and abstracted portraits occur in a compelling discourse with the avant-garde of European art history. Yet the works are equally accessible without that background, namely with their playful and provocative gestures, which tend to push the depictions to the brink of possibilities.
