Becoming Creole

Becoming Creole

Melissa A. Johnson

Rutgers University Press
2018
sidottu
Becoming Creole explores how people become who they are through their relationships with the natural world, and it shows how those relationships are also always embedded in processes of racialization that create blackness, brownness, and whiteness. Taking the reader into the lived experience of Afro-Caribbean people who call the watery lowlands of Belize home, Melissa A. Johnson traces Belizean Creole peoples’ relationships with the plants, animals, water, and soils around them, and analyzes how these relationships intersect with transnational racial assemblages. She provides a sustained analysis of how processes of racialization are always present in the entanglements between people and the non-human worlds in which they live.
Making War, Making Women

Making War, Making Women

Melissa A. McEuen

University of Georgia Press
2011
sidottu
Drawing on war propaganda, popular advertising, voluminous government records, and hundreds of letters and other accounts written by women in the 1940s, Melissa A. McEuen examines how extensively women’s bodies and minds became “battlegrounds” in the U.S. fight for victory in World War II.Women were led to believe that the nation’s success depended on their efforts—not just on factory floors, but at their dressing tables, bathroom sinks, and laundry rooms. They were to fill their arsenals with lipstick, nail polish, creams, and cleansers in their battles to meet the standards of ideal womanhood touted in magazines, newspapers, billboards, posters, pamphlets and in the rapidly expanding pinup genre. Scrutinized and sexualized in new ways, women understood that their faces, clothes, and comportment would indicate how seriously they took their responsibilities as citizens. McEuen also shows that the wartime rhetoric of freedom, democracy, and postwar opportunity coexisted uneasily with the realities of a racially stratified society. The context of war created and reinforced whiteness, and McEuen explores how African Americans grappled with whiteness as representing the true American identity.Using perspectives of cultural studies and feminist theory, Making War, Making Women offers a broad look at how women on the American home front grappled with a political culture that used their bodies in service of the war effort.

Laria calls the Destined back to Aorea to find and face the darkness she cannot see. Join Mari, Gren, Ruv, and their newest friends as they hunt the source of the mysterious shadow across inhospitable lands, where no one has tread for eons...or at least, so they think. As they unearth Aorea's oldest, most well-kept secrets, they cannot help but wonder if some truths are better left forgotten. What critics are saying: "Hidden is a wildly entertaining epic adventure novel that keeps you hooked to its pages with its colorful characters, intricate storytelling, and stupendous worldbuilding. With its plethora of magical creatures including sanguines, leshii, lanti, necromancers, and a detailed history and lore of Aorea, Melissa Murray's narrative pulls you deep into an immersive world full of wonder and awe. The author takes her time setting up the plot but halfway through the book, the narrative picks up speed and flies by in its final stretch. I couldn't pick a favorite between the characters as everyone felt distinct and I was mesmerized by every single one of them. Despite being the second book in the series, Hidden also works out as a standalone. I was thoroughly entertained and I would highly recommend it to fantasy readers."Rated 5-stars by Readers' Favorite.Loosely inspired by Slavic mythology and folklore, Hidden is the second novel in the Circle Series by M.A.I. Murray, whose background in language, folklore, and engineering combine with her military experience to add a fresh spin on fantasy tropes. You may find unicorns and dragons in the land of Aorea, but they will not be the ones you'd expect.
How Death Saved My Life: Overcoming Scleroderma and Stage IV-B Hodgkin Lymphoma
How Death Saved My Life is a powerful testimony of hope, courage, perseverance and mentality. The author recounts her story of surviving late-stage cancer while suffering with the rare autoimmune disease called scleroderma. She shares both the emotional and practical difficulties she confronted and exactly what it took to be freed from both illnesses. But most importantly, she shows how the experience transformed her into a better person.Just after turning 30 Melissa began to feel different, for no discernible reason. For months before her affliction became more palpable she tried adjusting her diet and activities to start feeling like herself again. Slowly what she describes as a 'dark, unseen force' began to take over her body and her life. Her quest for an answer soon began, and grew in desperation as the weeks and months past.Initially thrilled to have a diagnosis finally, she quickly learned that the diagnosis was only the beginning. She was informed that there would be no cure, the illness would progress over time and that it very well could take her life. Refusing to give up she made every attempt to pursue her goals while navigating debilitating chronic illness.
