A major retrospective of the work of Lasar Segall, this catalogue explores his changing cultural and artistic identities as demonstrated in over 224 works. Documenting the Diaspora of the Jews and embodying modern notions of exoticism and primitivism in art, Segall's work presents many issues relevant in global culture and politics. Segall is regarded as an influential artist who infused Brazilian modernism with the colour, psychological intensity and spatial distortion characteristic of the German tradition. He later became concerned with a spiritualism rooted in a universal humanism and communion with nature.

"How great to see such a holistic, 360 degree view of such an essential thing."- Rachel Maddow. This updated 2018 edition reflects constant state of change in California's water issues. With inevitable natural disaster challenges to infrastructure like fire, flood, mud, drought, it includes an essay on dam safety, with Oroville Dam as an example. Presented as an anthology in three dimensions - history, story, and images in paintings and photography, it captures moments of change both visually and verbally. Droughts, floods and water quality issues cast harsh light on how we use water in our lives, our agriculture and our environment. Water policy and use are changing in dramatic ways that also consider the public's right to safe drinking water. "Water: More or Less" provides intriguing insight as to how we got to this point, and proposes options for solutions and answers. Twenty-one top water policy leaders add their diverse voices with personal essays written just for this book, and tell why they care so passionately about water. This edition, updated in 2018, reflects timeless issues, especially with climate change challenges facing California's future.

Walking Methodologies in a More-than-human World

Walking Methodologies in a More-than-human World

As a research methodology, walking has a diverse and extensive history in the social sciences and humanities, underscoring its value for conducting research that is situated, relational, and material. Building on the importance of place, sensory inquiry, embodiment, and rhythm within walking research, this book offers four new concepts for walking methodologies that are accountable to an ethics and politics of the more-than-human: Land and geos, affect, transmaterial and movement. The book carefully considers the more-than-human dimensions of walking methodologies by engaging with feminist new materialisms, posthumanisms, affect theory, trans and queer theory, Indigenous theories, and critical race and disability scholarship. These more-than-human theories rub frictionally against the history of walking scholarship and offer crucial insights into the potential of walking as a qualitative research methodology in a more-than-human world. Theoretically innovative, the book is grounded in examples of walking research by WalkingLab, an international research network on walking (www.walkinglab.org).The book is rich in scope, engaging with a wide range of walking methods and forms including: long walks on hiking trails, geological walks, sensory walks, sonic art walks, processions, orienteering races, protest and activist walks, walking tours, dérives, peripatetic mapping, school-based walking projects, and propositional walks. The chapters draw on WalkingLab’s research-creation events to examine walking in relation to settler colonialism, affective labour, transspecies, participation, racial geographies and counter-cartographies, youth literacy, environmental education, and collaborative writing. The book outlines how more-than-human theories can influence and shape walking methodologies and provokes a critical mode of walking-with that engenders solidarity, accountability, and response-ability.This volume will appeal to graduate students, artists, and academics and researchers who are interested in Education, Cultural Studies, Queer Studies, Affect Studies, Geography, Anthropology, and (Post)Qualitative Research Methods.

An unfiltered, colorful romp through the IRL world of influencers that spills the tea on the multibillion-dollar industry of content creation. If you're anything like journalist Stephanie McNeal--aka, a millennial woman--you spend hours every day indulging in Instagram's infinite scroll. The influencers on the platform aren't just providing eye candy; these tastemakers impact how we cook, consume, parent, decorate, think, and live. But what exactly is going on behind the curtain of the perfectly curated Instagram grids we obsess over the most? Through intimate, funny, and vulnerable reporting, McNeal takes us through the looking glass and into the secretive real world of three major influencers: fashion and lifestyle juggernaut Caitlin Covington of Southern Curls & Pearls, runner and advocate Mirna Valerio, and OG "mommy blogger" Shannon Bird. Swipe Up For More is based on three years of unprecedented, fly-on-the-wall access that offers a rare glimpse into how these influencers build their empires, struggle with the haters and snarkers, fight for creative control from the tech platforms that enable their businesses, parent in public, and try to look good while doing it. Along the way, McNeal answers burning questions, like: Why are there so many Mormon mommy influencers? What is it like to work for a popular influencer? What do they do with all the free swag? How do brand partnerships work? And how much money do they really make? Irresistible, juicy, and voyeuristic, Swipe Up For More reveals all about the women some love to hate (and many actually, secretly, genuinely love).
