Laatokan rannalla sijainnut Kurkijoen suomalainen maatalouspitäjä koki vuosina 1940-1944 kolme mullistavaa käännekohtaa.Talvisodan jälkeen Kurkijoen kunta liitettiin 1940 Neuvostoliittoon, jatkosodan ajaksi 1941 uudelleen Suomeen ja vuonna 1944 pysyvästi Neuvosto-Karjalaan. Yhtä monta kertaa vaihtuivat sen väestö sekä yhteiskunnalliset ja taloudelliset rakenteet. Mutta kaikista murroksista huolimatta Kurkijoen keskustaajaman Lopotin suomalainen rakennuskanta säilyi.Neuvostoliitossa valtio määritteli osana maatalouspolitiikkaa, millaisia maaseudun sekä sen taajamien ja arkkitehtuurin tuli olla. Siksi hyvin säilynyt Kurkijoen taajama antaa poikkeukselliset lähtökohdat tarkastella vieraan ja oman, suomalaisten ja neuvostoliittolaisten rakennusten ja ympäristön vastaanottoa ja käyttöä muuttuvissa valtiollisissa yhteyksissä.
