Faldo has been branded one of the coldest men in British sport - at times better known for being aloof, arrogant and self-obsessed than for winning three Open Championships and three US Masters. But after thirty years as a professional golf player, his career continues to reach highs and his influence is even stronger than it was in the 1980s.What has driven Britain's most successful and most complex player to remarkable success? From golf superstardom to failed marriages and inexplicable losses in form, the updated edition of Nick Faldo: Driven analyses exactly what motivates this seemingly inscrutable man.

Major Benjamin Hord, CSA wrote this novel sometime between 1865 and 1922 when he died. Since then his book lay unpublished among his family's records until this year of publication. In it, he develops a fascinating and curious tale of a young cavalryman's service during the Civil War, mostly in Missouri. It is a rare eyewitness depiction of the battles and skirmishes in which he fought. Hord uses his family's experiences during the war and those of his friend Nick Hardeman, as the setting for the story. Because he wrote his book over one hundred and twenty years ago, his engaging Victorian style lends unusual authenticity to the cavalry actions, as it does to the whole tale.

Based on the early life of the author Benjamin McColloch Hord, this book is a mix of fact and fiction. Hord writes about his boyhood life at Rose Hill Plantation, his college days at Chapel Hill, and his experience as a soldier and officer in the Civil War. Not only is Hord's work a fascinating story of triumph and tragedy, it is a vibrant testament to the beliefs and practices of many early 20th century southerners.

The reverse of Nick Drake's headstone, wedged deep into the earth of an English parish church graveyard, reads: "Now we rise and we are everywhere." The words were penned by Drake in 1974: Thirty years later, they are jarringly prophetic. Like nearly all prematurely buried cult figures, Nick Drake is reinvented each time he is rediscovered. In 2000, the sheepish, astral musings of Pink Moon became synonymous with backing a Volkswagen Cabrio convertible away from a raucous house party, as VW boldly sold American drivers on the notion of eschewing red plastic cups and bro-hugs for moonbeams and tree trunks (and a cute German car - sort of).The Cabrio ad inadvertently sparked an unlikely boost in record sales, propelling the album towards platinum status nearly 28 years after its release. But with each well-intentioned revival of interest, Nick Drake slips further and further out of reach, martyred and codified, superceded and consumed by his own tragic context. Since his controversial death in 1974, Nick Drake has been heralded as a 26-year-old prophet, the diffident enigma, the tortured precursor to Kurt Cobain, the fallen hero, the folksinger-as-folksymbol, the self-sacrificing patron saint of lonely, disaffected teenagers - the One who died for our sins. This book explores how a tiny acoustic record has puttered and purred its way into a new millennium. Amanda Petrusich interviews producer Joe Boyd, string arranger Robert Kirby, and even the marketing team behind the VW commercial."Thirty-Three and a Third" is a series of short books about critically acclaimed and much-loved albums of the past 40 years. By turns obsessive, passionate, creative and informed, the books in this series demonstrate many different ways of writing about music.

Iconic drug-rock frontman, brutally poetic songwriter, cult novelist, and critically acclaimed screenwriter Nick Cave is one of the most revered and singular artistic talents of the past three decades. This revealing collection of interviews tells the story of his 30-year career in his own words. Including his debauched years with the Birthday Party, the global success of the Bad Seeds and their ragged gospel-rock, Cave's addictions and artistry, and the roots of the barbed gothic romanticism that suffuses his lyrics. Displaying provocative intelligence and enigmatic vision, Cave offers valuable insight into the risks and gains of surrendering oneself to the rock n roll myth. "
Nick Waplington: Learn How To Die The Easy Way
Nick Waplington's contribution to the Venice Biennale in 2001 expresses a yearning for the artistic and commercial freedom that the internet might yet expose, and a celebration of the dislocated reason behind conventional thoughts and the media they use. The limitless boundaries of the internet, and the endless possibilities that exist in cyberspace for communication and information, are what drives Nick Waplington's survey of what this new media holds for the artist and society in general. Not bound by social, moral or ethical considerations, the internet and its implications were elaborated on for Waplington's presence at the Venice Biennale.Somewhere out there lies the new unchartered frontier of cyberspace. In that Babel there are images, dreams, inert and vital messages, anonymous ciphers and calculating incubi. Because it is faceless, as if somehow subterranean, human dialogue and the expression of ideas can multiply without responsibility, without the parameters of authorial disciplines or social conventions. Could this be anarchy, of the kind that artists linger on street corners for? For Waplington, the medium is certainly the message, but one far more profound than McLuhan's epithet, since this is a medium not bound by social, moral or ethical considerations. It is as if he had found himself a child again, locked in the toy shop overnight, where train sets would double as conveyor belts of ideas, and Action Man as a table leg."If, as I suspect," says Waplington, "the internet has broken the stranglehold of governments and large media corporations on mass communication, then we could be in for a very exciting period of development on a number of different levels. Would a breakdown of current modes of social, moral and political cohesion be too much for a man to ask for?"
Heaven in Our Hearts: Selected Poems by Nick Leforce
This collection of poems by the Nick LeForce, the Transformational Poet, comes with a warning: Never ask a poet for advice unless you are willing to tolerate ambiguity because a poet speaks in more than meaning, wraps words in rhythms, sounds in sensations; giving you, instead, a message in a bottletossed in the sea from a distant shore, written in a code you must crack and filled with the fragments of a mapthat may just lead you to the treasure your heart most desires.(Excerpt from "Message in a Bottle")And it does deliver a map by dividing the poems into four sections-Living, Losing, Learning, and Loving. Although this sequence is not mandatory, it serves as a guide. If we can use our living and losing as a learning to be more loving, then we do have a chance of finding "heaven in our hearts." The title comes from the poem, "Heaven," which celebrates the elevation of oneself that occurs when someone believes in you: Then, you came You believed in me.Your eyes twinkling like stars in the night skywitnessing my dreams. Your smile rising like the morning sun, melting walls and gates andawakening the magic in me.How can I ever give to you what you have given me?I offer what I have with love. I pour the wine of my words into your cup, wanting us to get drunk on life and share the heaven in our heart
