The Message of Obadiah, Nahum and Zephaniah

The Message of Obadiah, Nahum and Zephaniah

Obadiah, Nahum and Zephaniah are probably among the least-read books of the Bible and are rarely preached. However, Gordon Bridger encourages us to study and apply these three Old Testament prophets for several compelling reasons. As part of Scripture, they claim to bring a message from God and teach us some major truths: - the importance of focusing on God, who is personal, sovereign, righteous, and loving - facing up to sin and judgment - responding in repentance and faith - the hope of future salvation and restoration. They also relate to the real world, in touch with the social and political issues of their day (the seventh century BC), as well as spiritual and moral issues: sleaze amongst political leaders, unfaithfulness of religious leaders, national and personal pride, crimes against humanity and the persecution of God's people. Hence, these challenging books are expounded on here with clarity and conviction, tackling themes and issues that are especially relevant to today's church and world. The Bible Speaks Today series covers every book of the Old and New Testaments, as well as Bible themes that run through the whole of Scripture. These revised editions are redesigned inside and out and have been sensitively updated with contemporary language and Bible translations to help you follow, study and teach the Bible in today's world.

The Scroll of Obadiah narrates the life of a Norman priest who converted to Judaism. Born in Italy in the 1070s, he travelled to the Middle East during the First Crusade. His life is uniquely documented in his autobiography, which was uncovered in partly indecipherable fragments in the Cairo Geniza, an ancient archive. Scholars have restored the dramatic story, which relates his many experiences in Baghdad and Aleppo, including an account of the Battle of the Field of Blood between the Turks and the Christians in 1119.

The Bible is the Word of God inspired by the Holy Spirit. The translator has a very serious responsibility not to change the meaning in any way. In order to translate the meaning of the text accurately, the translator often has to use grammatical forms and words that are different from those of the language he is translating. This suggests that acquisition of the knowledge of the source language by the translator is indispensable. This book presents this underlying importance hence, an exegetical study, positing grammatical forms, words, poetic, symbolic and metaphoric language of the book of Obadiah. This study therefore gives a basis for the translation of Obadiah into Gbari one of the African Languages. The work covers the historical and literary background of the text and brings to light an account of the description of contemporary scholars' views on the nature of the text. A literary approach has been explored in the study of this text and an analysis of its verbal forms in Hebrew poetry.

How many people know some Latin and would like to read the Bible of St. Jerome? Me, for one. I searched for years but never found a suitable bilingual version, so in the end I decided to do my own. This is not an academic version. It's just the plain old Bible, aimed primarily at the curious and the hopeful. Fiat Lux

With their messages of doom and judgment, the Minor Prophets have not been popular subjects in the history of biblical interpretation. In this exegetical and expository commentary, noted scholars remedy this neglect by offering an authoritative, evangelical treatment on the prophets. This volume, the second of three, features commentary by Jeffrey Niehaus (Obadiah), Joyce Baldwin (Jonah), Bruce Waltke (Micah), Tremper Longman III (Nahum), and F. F. Bruce (Habakkuk). The authors not only provide meticulous exegesis of the Hebrew text but also relate the message of the ancient prophets to contemporary life in practical and meaningful ways.
The Literary and Philosophical Canon of Obadiah Sforno
The present volume contains articles based on papers delivered at the two international conferences organized as part of the Between Two Worlds research project in 2017 and 2019. Obadiah Sforno was an influential Jewish thinker of sixteenth-century Italian Renaissance, whose religious and exegetical authority has had an enduring legacy. The collected essays offer an unprecedented and much desired overview of his life and thought with an emphasis on the neglected philosophical dimension of his oeuvre, as seen in both his biblical commentaries and his sole philosophical treatise Light of the Nations.

The six Old Testament books dealt with in this volume of the Commentary are part of a larger unit originally copied on one scroll and called, for the sake of simplicity, the books of the twelve or minor prophets. The prophetic visions, liturgies and oracles contained in the twelve books were collected over a period of more than 300 years and given their final shape not earlier than the middle of the fifth century BC. In his opening chapter Dr Watts provides the historical and liturgical background to the books and discusses the nature and role of prophecy in worship. In the style established for the series, the NEB translation of the text then follows, divided into brief sections alternating with sections of commentary. The results of Old Testament scholarship and modern theological though are conveyed to the student and the layman in simple language.

Mason here provides a valuable basic orientation to the modern reading of these short and often difficult prophetic books. By carefully surveying and evaluating the historical critical options that have been proposed during the last century, Mason then outlines the message of these books within a post-exilic, canonical context. In the face of differing critical opinion as to what does, and what does not, come from Micah in the book of Micah, the position taken here is that the book has to be read finally as a coherent postexilic tract which re-interprets the prophet's message in the light of the situation after the exile. For Nahum and Obadiah, which have so often received a bad press because of their theology of apparent hate for the foreigner, it is argued that the function the books were designed to serve in the Book of the Twelve must be taken seriously.

Where is the line between God's mercy and judgment? In the latest volume of the New International Commentary on the Old Testament, James D. Nogalski offers a new translation of and commentary on several of the Minor Prophets--the books of Joel, Obadiah, and Jonah--that grapple with this theme in radically different ways. This volume includes a robust introduction for each book, delineating its textual transmission, historical context, literary form, and major themes. The introduction also discusses the role of each book within the collection of the Twelve (Minor) Prophets. The commentaries proper explain the texts verse by verse, illuminating each book's structure and canonical significance, yet always with an eye toward pastoral application. Academically rigorous and accessibly written, The Books of Joel, Obadiah, and Jonah is an invaluable resource for scholars, students, and pastors.
