Middle American Terranes, Potential Correlatives, and Orogenic Processes
Consisting of papers that have appeared recently in International Geology Review, Middle American Terranes, Potential Correlatives, and Orogenic Processes focuses on Middle American terranes in which tectonic processes, including flat-slab subduction, for orogenic development are examined at various times since the late Mesoproterozoic: at 1 Ga, through the Paleozoic, and into the Cenozoic. Many papers relate the evolution of the Middle American terranes over the past billion years to global scale events, and a second theme running through the book relates to the supercontinents, Rodinia and Pangea, the geometry of their amalgamation and breakup, and the processes responsible.Highlights include: · An update on the geographic record, tectonic setting, and provenance of these terranes · Documentation of allocthonous nature and position peripheral to Amazonia of the ~1 Ga basement of southern Mexico · Data demonstrating that the basement rocks were involved in several Phanerozoic tectonic events · An examination of new evidence of a Late Paleozoic event associated with the amalgamation of Pangea overprinting the ~1 Ga basement and the Paleozoic units lying chiefly to the west and south of it · An exploration of the following potential correlatives: (1) events in Europe on the northern margin of Gondwana; (2) the Late Silurian-Devonian Acadian orogeny in the Appalachian, which is inferred to have resulted from flat-slab subduction related to overriding a plume; and (3) Mesozoic-Cenozoic events along the western margin of Laurentia · A discussion of possible mechanisms for the initiation of orogeny, flat-slab subduction in the Laramide orogeny, and hypotheses relating to the amalgamation and breakup of supercontine

As modern society is extremely dependent on the Internet, social networks, and developing technologies, a threat to the security of both the individual and society as a whole has emerged. The openness and global nature of the Internet create opportunities both for criminals, who can use the available information for criminal purposes, and for law enforcement officials. Police officers, in turn, can deal with the preventive processing of data from the Internet in order to prevent crimes. This type of data analysis can detect illegal or criminal actions even at the stage of their formation. Crime-Related Events Identification Based on Text Analytics Approach describes the possibilities of extracting crime-related facts from semi-structured information from various Internet sources so that crime can be combatted. This book is aimed at police officers and IT professionals working in online investigations.

The Flower Show and The Toth Family, two novellas in one volume by Istv n rk ny (1912-79), introduce to an English-speaking audience a Hungarian writer with a keen sense of the absurdities of modern life. In the '60s and '70s, rk ny's vein of black comedy earned him the epithet "master of the grotesque" for the popular dramatizations of these and other novels. The Flower Show (1977) is rk ny's last novel and his most widely translated work of fiction. With consummate irony, the author exploits our universal unease in the face of death, the desire to "star" taken to its ultimate absurdity by playing the lead in one's own demise, and the voyeurism of the modern media. In The Toth Family (1967) a mad army major on leave terrorizes a village fireman and his family, forcing them to cut and fold endless quantities of cardboard packing boxes every night until dawn. Originally written as a film script, the novel's scenes flicker past in lunatic array as rk ny satirizes Hungary of the early '40s and the acquiescence of a quasi-feudal, nationalistic, caste-ridden society to the authoritarian state of Nazi Germany. The impression is as if the Marx Brothers had been born out of Dr. Strangelove.

In an era when television and professional sports are synonymous, baseball remains not only a sport to watch, but a sport to read about and study. Avid baseball fans linger over box scores, grumble through opinionated columns, and cheer-rousing headlines. Over the last hundred years baseball has generated more ink than any other sport. It is not only the favorite pastime of American sports fans, but also a considerable passion for American sports writers. If television is what brings the game into our living rooms, then it is the writers who bring the game to our hearts and minds. The Phillies Reader offers selections from some of the best writers to ever write about the woes and triumphs of the Philadelphia Phillies and their hard-ball fans. This collection covers over a century of the team's history, from the time Ed Delahanty hit a remarkable four home runs in a game, to the 1993 against-all-odds run at the World Championship. The Phillies Reader not only documents the franchise but presents a history of the journalism that sometimes supported it, and other times sought to bring it down. The stories include the athletic achievements of such legendary Phillies as Chuck Klein, Richie Ashburn, Dick Allen, Mike Schmidt; the political turmoil surrounding the "ok" from manager Ben Chapman to "ride" Jackie Robinson about the color of his skin; the bizarre shooting of Eddie Waitkus; the heroics of the Whiz Kids; the heartbreak of '64; and the occasional triumphs and frequent travails of controversial managers Gene Mauch, Frank Lucchesi, and Danny Ozark. From Red Smith to James Michener, The Phillies Reader presents for the first time an archive of Phillies literature that reveals what it is that makes legends. Author note: Richard Orodenker teaches English and American studies at Penn State University, Ogontz. He is author of The Writer's Game: Baseball Writing in America.
