Henry North Holroyd, the 3rd Lord Sheffield was born in 1832. After Eton he spent time in the Diplomatic Service and the Army. He became an MP for East Sussex in 1857 and held the seat for eight years. Also in 1857 he began his first term as president of Sussex CCC and remained in office for eleven years.His greatest indulgence was at his home, Sheffield Park, where he built a cricket ground to match any in the country. In 1884 and on four later occasions, the Australian Tourists began their tours with a fixture against Lord Sheffield's XI, captained always by the legendary W G Grace. In 1891/2 Lord Sheffield took the England team to Australia to play a Test series. Other grand matches in the Park included fixtures against South Africa and a team of Parsees from Bombay. Lord Sheffield was famous for his hospitality and no expense was spared in staging these wonderful cricket matches.

This book is an illustrated history of Panshanger Aerodrome in Hertfordshire. Much smaller today than its heyday, it was originally 248 acres acquired by the Air Ministry in 1940. A decoy factory was constructed there to divert enemy bombers from the de Havilland facility at Hatfield, 6 miles south and the lands beside de Havilland were also used as a reserve landing ground, called Howell Hyde.In 1941 the Elementary Flying School moved from Hatfield to Holwell Hyde and it continued expansion becoming RAF Panshanger in 1943. Army and airforce pilots were trained there as were Allied forces, i.e. Dutch Air Force and Turkish and Canadian military. De Havilland managed the London Aeroplane Club on the north site and the Reserve Flying School, and a gliding school was based there until 1955. In 1953 the aerodrome sold into private hands. It has since featured in many a television advert.

The Gothic has always been interested in strange utterances and unsettling voices: from half-heard ghostly murmurings and the admonitions of the dead, to the terrible cries of the monstrous nonhuman. Gothic Utterance offers the first book-length study of the role such voices play in the Gothic tradition, exploring their prominence and importance in the American literature produced between the Revolutionary War and the close of the nineteenth century. This book argues that the American Gothic foregrounds the overpowering affect and distressing significations of the voices of the dead, dying, abjected, marginalised or nonhuman, in order to undertake a sustained interrogation of what it means to be and speak as an American in this period. The American Gothic imagines new forms of relation between speaking subjects, positing more inclusive and expansive forms of community. Gothic Utterance also emphasises the ethical demands attending our encounters with Gothic voices: the Gothic suggests that how we choose to hear and respond to these voices says much about our relationship with the world around us, its inhabitants - dead or otherwise - and the limits of our own subjectivity and empathy.
