In this volume, twenty-four creators come together with three scholars to discuss Contemporary Circus, bridging the divide between practice and theory. Lavers, Leroux, and Burtt offer conversations across four key themes: Apparatus, Politics, Performers, and New Work. Extensively illustrated with fifty photos of Contemporary Circus productions, and extensively annotated, Contemporary Circus thematically groups and contextualises extracts of conversations to provide a sophisticated and wide-ranging study supported by critical theory. Of interest to both practitioners and scholars, Contemporary Circus uses the lens of ‘contestation,’ or calling things into question, to provide a portal into ways of seeing today’s circus performance. Conversations with: Lachlan Binns and Jascha Boyce (Gravity and Other Myths), Tilde Björfors (Cirkus Cirkör), Kim ‘Busty Beatz’ Bowers (Hot Brown Honey), Shana Carroll (The 7 Fingers), David Clarkson (Stalker), Philippe Decouflé (Compagnie DCA), Fez Faanana (Briefs), Mike Finch (Circus Oz), Daniele Finzi Pasca (Compagnia Finzi Pasca), Sean Gandini (Gandini Juggling), Firenza Guidi (ElanFrantoio, NoFit State Circus), Jo Lancaster and Simon Yates (Acrobat), Johann Le Guillerm (Cirque Ici), Yaron Lifschitz (Circa), Chelsea McGuffin (Company 2), Phia Ménard (Compagnie Non Nova), Jennifer Miller (Circus Amok), Adrien Mondot (Compagnie Adrien M and Claire B), Charlotte Mooney and Tina Koch (Ockham’s Razor), Philippe Petit (high wire artist), and Elizabeth Streb (STREB EXTREME ACTION).

A gorgeous color depiction of every remaining structure designed by Louis Sullivan Louis Henry Sullivan (1856–1924) is a foundational figure in American architecture. Long considered the father of the skyscraper, he first came to wide attention in 1889 with the completion of the Auditorium Building in Chicago. Here, for the first time, every remaining structure designed by Louis Sullivan is captured in striking color by award-winning architectural photographer James Caulfield and is accompanied by highlights of his life and accomplishments, detailed by Patrick F. Cannon. Sullivan became famous for his dictum “form ever follows function,” and his genius shines here in stunning photographs that establish his place among the greatest of the world’s architects. Distributed for Glessner House.
Quand Versailles Etait Conte... La Cour de Louis XIV Par Les Ecrivains de Son Temps
English summary: This book takes readers on a literary tour of Louis XIV's court, revealing how writers who had the leisure to frequent and observe the court talked about it, marvelled at it, ridiculed it, admired it - and scrutinized it: great authors such as Moliere, La Fontaine and La Bruyere, Bossuet and Saint-Simon, Mesdames de La Fayette and de Sevigne, as well as some lesser-known writers - attentive memorialists or well-informed princes - and even the Sun King himself, to name but a few. Their prime motivation was not so much a desire to record historical events as it was a passion for literature which they wanted to convey to their readers to help them appreciate their insights and cutting remarks, the melodious incisiveness and breadth of their language, their concise turn of phrase and witticisms - skills typical of such authors, whom we may be wrong to label as classical - and only classical. What emerges from this tribute to the pen and to scholarly thought are some analytical and satirical truths about the court life of yesteryear which are still relevant today because they shed light on certain aspects of our own era. St. Louis and the Great War

St. Louis and the Great War

When World War I erupted in 1914, the conflict seemed a world away from tranquil St. Louis. By the time of the Armistice, however, the war had affected countless Missourians in ways big and small. St. Louis and the Great War is a richly illustrated account of how the city and its citizens evolved and proudly served in those four years. St. Louis’s involvement in the events of World War I is largely unknown to the outside world, but it produced a number of significant contributions. Munitions that found their way onto the battlefields of Europe were manufactured in St. Louis. A local hospital pioneered the use of X-rays, providing a crucial new medical resource to help better treat the unprecedented casualties. And, in the nineteen months of American involvement in WWI, more than one thousand St. Louisans gave their lives. Likewise, the war had an irreversible effect on the daily routines of the city’s residents, whether in the form of propaganda campaigns that led to both patriotic fervor and anti-German hysteria, or in the purchasing of liberty bonds and the cultivation of victory gardens. Featuring more than 250 photographs and archival documents from the collections of the Missouri Historical Society and Soldiers Memorial Military Museum—most of which have never before been published—St. Louis and the Great War details how the war touched the city and how its citizens rose to the challenge.

This book teaches the fundamentals of fluid flow by including both theory and the applications of fluid flow in chemical engineering. It puts fluid flow in the context of other transport phenomena such as mass transfer and heat transfer, while covering the basics, from elementary flow mechanics to the law of conservation. The book then examines the applications of fluid flow, from laminar flow to filtration and ventilization. It closes with a discussion of special topics related to fluid flow, including environmental concerns and the economic reality of fluid flow applications.
Open-Ended Problems

Open-Ended Problems

James Patrick Abulencia; Louis Theodore

John Wiley Sons Inc
2015
sidottu
This is a unique book with nearly 1000 problems and 50 case studies on open-ended problems in every key topic in chemical engineering that helps to better prepare chemical engineers for the future. The term "open-ended problem" basically describes an approach to the solution of a problem and/or situation for which there is not a unique solution. The Introduction to the general subject of open-ended problems is followed by 22 chapters, each of which addresses a traditional chemical engineering or chemical engineering-related topic. Each of these chapters contain a brief overview of the subject matter of concern, e.g., thermodynamics, which is followed by sample open-ended problems that have been solved (by the authors) employing one of the many possible approaches to the solutions. This is then followed by approximately 40-45 open-ended problems with no solutions (although many of the authors' solutions are available for those who adopt the book for classroom or training purposes). A reference section is included with the chapter's contents. Term projects, comprised of 12 additional chapter topics, complement the presentation. This book provides academic, industrial, and research personnel with the material that covers the principles and applications of open-ended chemical engineering problems in a thorough and clear manner. Upon completion of the text, the reader should have acquired not only a working knowledge of the principles of chemical engineering, but also (and more importantly) experience in solving open-ended problems. What many educators have learned is that the applications and implications of open-ended problems are not only changing professions, but also are moving so fast that many have not yet grasped their tremendous impact. The book drives home that the open-ended approach will revolutionize the way chemical engineers will need to operate in the future.
