With this fourth edition, accountants will acquire a practical set of tools and the confidence they need to use them effectively in making business decisions. It better reflects a more conceptual and decision-making approach to the material. The authors follow a "macro- to micro-" strategy by starting with a discussion of real financial statements first, rather than starting with the Accounting Cycle. The objective is to establish how a financial statement communicates the financing, investing, and operating activities of a business to users of accounting information. This motivates accountants by grounding the discussion in the real world, showing them the relevance of the topics covered to their careers.
Prince John Magruder

He was one of the most intriguing characters of the Civil War era.As famous for his courage as for his ornate uniforms and flamboyantstyle, he won intrepid victories on the peninsula of Virginia andsuccessfully defended Texas during the long war's waning days. Now,in the first full-length biography of Major General John BankheadMagruder, acclaimed historian Paul D. Casdorph has created abrilliant portrait of the Confederate general dubbed "PrinceJohn." Born in Virginia in 1807, Magruder attended the University ofVirginia, where he dined with Thomas Jefferson and his classmatesincluded a young writer named Edgar Allan Poe. These were the firstin a long line of famous acquaintances. While at West Point,Magruder met the future Confederate leaders with whom he wouldultimately join forces: Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and JosephE. Johnston. Graduating from West Point in 1830, Magruder embarked upon threeaction-packed decades of service in the U.S. Army, taking him fromFlorida during the Seminole wars to the frontiers of Maine, NewYork, and Texas. In 1847, his pivotal leadership of GeneralWinfield Scott's forces was instrumental in defeating Santa Anna atthe gates of Mexico City. It was in that conflict that Magruderintroduced a young lieutenant named Thomas Jackson to the strategicvalue of deploying rapidly maneuverable artillery. Fourteen yearslater, at Bull Run, Jackson would earn a colorful nickname of hisown: Stonewall. By the spring of 1861, Prince John Magruder had risen to theestimable position of commander of the Washington garrison.Although he knew Abraham Lincoln and several cabinet memberspersonally, when secession and war became imminent, Magruderresigned his duties as the president's bodyguard to race home toVirginia to answer the Confederate call to arms. In the opening engagements of the Civil War, Prince John'sinitiative and audacity earned him both admiration and acclaim. Hisoften outrageous behavior, spurred by heavy drinking, also broughtnotoriety. Magruder's larger-than-life style was in sharp contrastto the rigid standards demanded by the Confederate leadership, andPrince John was transferred to the district of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Once out from under the eyes of his stern taskmastersin Virginia, the eccentric--yet unquestionably courageous--officerrallied his command. His heroic defense of the Texas coastculminated in a great victory at the Battle of Galveston on NewYear's Day, 1863. When the war ended, he headed for Mexico, and yet another greatadventure. Serving in the government of Emperor Maximilian,Magruder, once more, added his own unique flourish to a historicupheaval. With enemy forces closing in, he attempted to arrange anescape plot for the doomed ruler. When the plan failed, Magruderfled to Cuba. Prince John eventually returned to the United States, where he died in 1871. As befits its bold and brassy subject, Prince John Magruder is ariveting--and overdue--portrait of one of the nineteenth century'smost charismatic military figures. It reveals new insights into theinner workings of the Confederacy, and sheds new light onlesser-known engagements in Texas and the American West. Daringmilitary adventure and dazzling biography come together in thiscompelling chronicle of a dynamic individual who managed to createa few ripples of his own within the swirling tides ofhistory. Critical acclaim for Paul D. Casdorph "Terrifically compelling." -- Atlanta Journal & Constitution onLee and Jackson "Engrossing . . . a superb narrative of the pair's dazzlingvictories. . . . An excellent account of the war." --Kirkus Reviewson Lee and Jackson "To read [this] lively run-through of the events of a cataclysmictime is to be caught up again in the enormous vitality itengendered." -- Washington Post on Let the Good Times Roll A History Book Club Selection

High Resolution Flow Modelling in Hydrology and Geomorphology

High Resolution Flow Modelling in Hydrology and Geomorphology

Paul D. Bates; Stuart N. Lane

John Wiley Sons Inc
2000
nidottu
High resolution hydraulic modelling is becoming accepted as a standard research methodology by hydrologists, geomorphologists and engineers. Recent advances in process understanding, numerical analysis techniques and improvements in available computer power have led to increases in both the space/time resolution and the dimensionality at which fluvial flow problems can be simulated. As a consequence of these developments there is now enormous potential to connect complex flow processes to the landforms they create in a rigorous, quantitative manner that has not, hitherto, been possible. This volume provides an integrated coverage of this topic, which has not previously been available either in the mathematical/engineering or environmental literature, and outlines recent major research developments that have taken place in this field. The book begins with an accessible introductory chapter on hydraulic theory. It then concentrates on high dimensional and high resolution approaches, detailing current research debates in hydraulic modelling. There is comprehensive coverage of an application scope for such techniques, including flow development, sediment transport, pollutant transport, catchment hydrology and landform development. This volume is of particular interest to lecturers and postgraduates in Geography, Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mathematics, Earth and Environmental Sciences, as well as to scientists in the public sector and commerce.

At publication date, a free ebook version of this title will be available through Luminos, University of California Press's Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. Outcasts of Empire probes the limits of modern nation-state sovereignty by positioning colonial Taiwan at the intersection of the declining Qing and ascending Japanese empires. Paul D. Barclay chronicles the lives and times of interpreters, chiefs, and trading-post operators along the far edges of the expanding international system, an area known as Taiwan's "savage border." In addition, he boldly asserts the interpenetration of industrial capitalism and modern ethnic identities. By the 1930s, three decades into Japanese imperial rule, mechanized warfare and bulk commodity production rendered superfluous a whole class of mediators-among them, Kondo "the Barbarian" Katsusaburo, Pan Bunkiet, and Iwan Robao. Even with these unreliable allies safely cast aside, the Japanese empire lacked the resources to integrate indigenous Taiwan into the rest of the colony. The empire, therefore, created the Indigenous Territory, which exists to this day as a legacy of Japanese imperialism, local initiatives, and the global commoditization of culture.

Dismembering the Body Politic

Dismembering the Body Politic

Paul D. Halliday

Cambridge University Press
2003

This is a major survey of how towns were governed in late Stuart and early Hanoverian England. A new kind of politics emerged out of England’s Civil War: partisan politics. This happened first in the corporations governing the towns, and not at Parliament as is usually argued. Based on an examination of the records of scores of corporations, this book explains how war unleashed a cycle of purge and counter-purge which continued for decades. It also explains how a society that feared a system of politics based on division found the means to absorb it peacefully. As conflict sharpened in communities everywhere, local competitors turned to the court of King’s Bench to resolve their differences. In doing so, they prompted the court to develop a new body of law that protected local governments from the divisive impulses within them.
God, the Mind's Desire

God, the Mind's Desire

Paul D. Janz

Cambridge University Press
2008
pokkari
This 2004 book reconfigures the basic problem of Christian thinking - 'How can human discourse refer meaningfully to a transcendent God?' - as a twofold demand for integrity: integrity of reason and integrity of transcendence. Centring around a provocative yet penetratingly faithful re-reading of Kant's empirical realism, and drawing on an impelling confluence of contemporary thinkers (including MacKinnon, Bonhoeffer, Marion, Putnam, Nagel) Paul D. Janz argues that theology's 'referent' must be located within present empirical reality. Rigorously reasoned yet refreshingly accessible throughout, this book provides an important, attentively informed alternative to the growing trends toward obscurantism, radicalization and anti-reason in many recent assessments of theological cognition, while remaining equally alert to the hazards of traditional metaphysics. In the book's culmination, epistemology and Christology converge around problems of noetic authority and orthodoxy with a kind of innovation, depth and straightforwardness that readers of theology at all levels of philosophical acquaintance will find illuminating.

The Geology of Multi-Ring Impact Basins

Paul D. Spudis

Cambridge University Press
2005
pokkari
Multi-ring basins are large impact craters formed in the early history of planets. They critically affect the evolution of the planets and their satellites. The Moon offers an exceptional chance to study these phenomena and this book provides a comprehensive geological study using data from lunar landings and remote sensing of the Moon. The author covers the formation and development of basins and considers their chemistry and mineralogy. He studies their effects on the volcanic, tectonic and geological evolution of the planet, including the catastrophic consequence on the planetary climate and evolution of life. This study is lavishly illustrated with many spectacular, highly-detailed photographs and diagrams.
Exploring Space, Exploring Earth

Exploring Space, Exploring Earth

Paul D. Lowman Jr; Neil A. Armstrong

Cambridge University Press
2002
sidottu
Paul Lowman, a NASA scientist for over 40 years, describes the impact of space flight on geology and geophysics. A foreword by Neil Armstrong emphasizes that the exploration of space has lead us to a far deeper understanding of our own planet. Direct results from Earth-orbital missions include studies of Earth’s gravity and magnetic fields. In contrast, the recognition of the economic and biological significance of impact craters on Earth is an indirect consequence of the study of the geology of other planets. The final chapter presents a new theory for the tectonic evolution of the Earth based on comparative planetology and the Gaia concept. Extensive illustrations, a glossary of technical terms, and comprehensive bibliography, provide geologists and geophysicists with a valuable summary of research. The book will also serve as a supplementary text for students of tectonics, remote sensing and planetary science.
