This collection of over 200 archive photographs, most never before published, highlights some of the changes and developments that have taken place in and around the villages of Wyke and Low Moor, near Bradford. Although the in the nineteenth century Bradford flourished as the centre of the Yorkshire woollen trade it also boasted several iron foundries. Perhaps the most prestigious was the Low Moor Company whose works, mineral lines and pits dominated the area for over 150 years; Wyke and Low Moor still bear the scars to this day. Accompanied by supporting text, this pictorial history stands witness to the area's industrial past, its close communities, and their work, worship and play. Compiled by the respective local history groups of Wyke and Low Moor, this volume will delight those who want to know more about the history of these two villages, and evoke memories of a bygone time for those who live there.

IBM Rational Application Developer is a very important tool for developers, but it is also a complex product. An Introduction to IBM Rational Application Developer, A Guided Tour is designed to jumpstart the learning process with its focus on interactive hands-on learning through a wide variety of useful, practical, end-to-end tutorials. Hands-on exercises and in-depth explanations form chapter "modules" within the book, thereby providing a complete step-by-step guide to each specific topic while allowing readers to pick and choose which tutorials they want (or need) to study without necessarily going in chapter order. And, because of its modular structure, each tutorial's sample code is independent of any earlier tutorials, freeing readers to skip from tutorial to tutorial, based on their specific knowledge requirements. Because of this design, this book continues to be a useful reference as a reader's "need to know" increases. Using this book's method, readers quickly learn IBM Rational Application Developer regardless of their previous level of experience or inexperience. For beginners, there are tutorials that teach how to create Web, EJB, JMS, and Web Services applications using Rational Application Developer. For the more advanced readers, there are tutorials on security, publishing, testing, team development, profiling, and logging. Written to appeal to as broad an audience as possible, the tutorials run on common databases, including IBM Cloudscape, IBM DB2(r) Universal Database, Microsoft(r) SQL Server, Sybase(r) Enterprise Systems, and Oracle(r) Database.
Construction Companion to Risk and Value Management
Risk and Value Management, the fifth release in the Construction Companion series, offers an introductory toolbox of techniques for managing risk and value in construction projects for architects and other building professionals. Risk and Value Management, the fifth release in the Construction Companion series, offers an introductory toolbox of techniques for managing risk and value in construction projects for architects and other building professionals. Identifying and assigning risk to deliver good value has become an increasingly important objective as projects become more complex and non-traditional procurement routes proliferate. This book describes the social and psychological dimensions of risk and value through a series of fascinating examples, whilst also examining the dominant trend towards partnering and its specific impact upon the assignment of risk and, consequently, upon value.

Peter Thomson won five golf Open Championships. He is only the third golfer to have won five or more, behind the great Harry Vardon who won six. It is a feat unlikely to be repeated in the modern era and puts him in the legendary league of Don Bradman, Rod Laver, Margaret Court and Dawn Fraser. On the 50th anniversary of his last Open Championship Peter Thomson talks about his life, golf and how he achieved open glory—not just once but five times. The Peter Thomson Five is beautifully illustrated with photos from Peter Thomson’s scrapbook and maps of the greens he played on.

Walker and his adopted cousin Hairy are Paleolithic adventurers, exploring their world "before it's all settled". All we have of their world are bits of bone, cave paintings and stone knives. Heavily researched, everything in this book could have actually happened. The story is set in prehistoric France's beautiful Gorges de l'Ard che, famous for its spectacular Pont d'Arc natural bridge and caverns of cave paintings, with little changed from its Paleolithic past. An adventure based on current anthropological understanding of primitive technology, culture and bushcraft. In their travels, Hairy and Walker must deal with saber-toothed tigers, megafaunal wolves, woolly mammoth and rhinoceros, giant cave bears, superstitious medicine men and burly Neanderthals. So join Hairy and Walker in an adventure set in our own, prehistoric past.

How would you feel if the person you had given your all to, left your life for and served faithfully, simply abandoned you? Would you be hurt? Would you be angry? Would you be confused? Or maybe even feel betrayed? Would you question whether you knew this person at all? Would you ask yourself, "Did I know him? Did he truly love me? Was he really who I thought he was?" And your answer may be, "I never knew him at all."This book observes the Betrayal of Peter from a different perspective while also paralleling it with modern day relationships.

This book, which focuses on the study of curvature, is an introduction to various aspects of pseudo-Riemannian geometry. We shall use Walker manifolds (pseudo-Riemannian manifolds which admit a non-trivial parallel null plane field) to exemplify some of the main differences between the geometry of Riemannian manifolds and the geometry of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds and thereby illustrate phenomena in pseudo-Riemannian geometry that are quite different from those which occur in Riemannian geometry, i.e. for indefinite as opposed to positive definite metrics. Indefinite metrics are important in many diverse physical contexts: classical cosmological models (general relativity) and string theory to name but two. Walker manifolds appear naturally in numerous physical settings and provide examples of extremal mathematical situations as will be discussed presently. To describe the geometry of a pseudo-Riemannian manifold, one must first understand the curvature of the manifold. We shall analyze a wide variety of curvature properties and we shall derive both geometrical and topological results. Special attention will be paid to manifolds of dimension 3 as these are quite tractable. We then pass to the 4 dimensional setting as a gateway to higher dimensions. Since the book is aimed at a very general audience (and in particular to an advanced undergraduate or to a beginning graduate student), no more than a basic course in differential geometry is required in the way of background. To keep our treatment as self-contained as possible, we shall begin with two elementary chapters that provide an introduction to basic aspects of pseudo-Riemannian geometry before beginning on our study of Walker geometry. An extensive bibliography is provided for further reading. Producing over three hundred major projects, including the celebrated Grand Central Terminal (designed in association with Reed & Stem), the charismatic Beaux Arts-trained Whitney Warren (1864-1943) and shrewd lawyer Charles D. Wetmore (1866-1941) grasped the stylistic requirements and prevailing architectural tastes of the vibrant period leading up to the Great Depression. The firm’s bold and creative interpretation of classical and French styles, as translated into American practice, reflected the cultural, social, and business aspirations of the country’s ruling class.Illustrated with Jonathan Wallen’s stunning new color photographs and with historic photographs, drawings, and plans, The Architecture of Warren & Wetmore is the first book to examine exclusively the scope of the firm’s rich and varied body of work. In addition to Grand Central Terminal, Warren & Wetmore was responsible for some of New York’s most memorable buildings, including the New York Yacht Club, grand mansions for such prominent clients as the Vanderbilts, and a number of luxurious early apartment buildings and hotels. During a period of rampant building activity, the firm was instrumental in shaping New York’s expanding cityscape with its office buildings in Terminal City and setback towers. Its hotels and resorts nationwide set an unprecedented level of comfort and luxury for America’s leisure class, guiding the direction of the modern-day hotel. The reconstruction of the university library in Louvain, Belgium-Warren’s most prized commission-held the international spotlight after World War I. The Architecture of Warren & Wetmore includes a catalogue raisonné and an employee roster, and is the definitive source about a practice that made an indelible imprint on the American landscape.

In the final decade of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, the United States experienced exponential growth and a flourishing economy, and with it, a building boom. Grosvenor Atterbury (1869–1956) produced more than one hundred major projects, including an array of grand mansions, picturesque estates, informal summer cottages, and farm groups. However, it was his role as town planner and civic leader and his work to create model tenements, hospitals, workers’ housing, and town plans for which he is most celebrated. His Forest Hills Gardens, designed in association with the Olmsted Brothers, is lauded as one of the most highly significant community planning projects of its time. As an inventor, Atterbury was responsible for one of the country’s first low-cost, prefabricated concrete construction systems, introducing beauty and inexpensive good design into the lives of the working classes. The Architecture of Grosvenor Atterbury is the first book to showcase the rich and varied repertoire of this prolific architect whose career spanned six decades and whose work affected the course of American architecture, planning, and construction. Illustrated with Jonathan Wallen’s stunning color photographs and over 250 historic drawings, plans, and photographs, it also includes a catalogue raisonné and an employee roster. It is the definitive source on an architect who made an indelible imprint on the American landscape.

The First World War largely directed the course of the twentieth century. Fought on three continents, the war saw 14 million killed and 34 million wounded. Its impact shaped the world we live in today, and the language of the trenches continues to live in the modern consciousness. One of the enduring myths of the First World War is that the experience of the trenches was not talked about. Yet dozens of words entered or became familiar in the English language as a direct result of the soldiers’ experiences. This book looks at how the experience of the First World War changed the English language, adding words that were both in slang and standard military use, and modifying the usage and connotations of existing words and phrases. Illustrated with material from the authors’ collections and photographs of the objects of the war, the book will look at how the words emerged into everyday language.
