Dawn D. Boyer, Ph.D.. as an artist, has had a prolific art career, starting her drawing and crafting at age five, then moving into construction paper mixed media, doll-making, clothing construction, and then miniatures (dollhouses and doll furniture) by her teens. She entered Virginia Commonwealth University in the Fine Art Program, then after her sophomore year, dropped out for a few years, then re-entered Radford Universities Graphic Advertising and Illustration Bachelor of Fine Art program. From that point, she was active in pen and ink illustrations, quilt-making, crocheting, and other mixed media art. While she wasn't able to make a living in the world of art between the mid-1980s to 2000, she did continue to enmesh herself in every possible type of art she could while raising a family and working full-time.Fast forward to 2013 and after graduating with her Ph.D. she started devoting her time and energy back to her artwork in the evenings while she opened up a consulting business. In only a few years she managed to create and publish over 40 'big kid' coloring books, and continued to pursue her favorite type of art - pen and ink illustrations of historic and abandoned architecture, including the restored colonial district of the city of Williamsburg Virginia. She decided to compile her hundreds of drawings into a series of sample books - coloring pages, pen and ink drawings, cartoons - and to also showcase photos of some of her mixed media pieces (which may be noted as for sale inside the book). You will delight at the chock-full of information pages of background history, photos, and illustrations. The Latina/o Pathway to the Ph.D.
The Latina/o population constitutes the largest racial and ethnic minority group in the U.S. and is disproportionately under-represented in college and in graduate programs. This is the first book specifically to engage with the absence of Latinas/os in doctoral studies. It proposes educational and administrative strategies to open up the pipeline, and institutional practices to ensure access, support, models and training for Latinas/os aspiring to the Ph.D. The under-education of Latina/o youth begins early. Given that by twelfth grade half will stop out or be pushed out of high school, and only seven percent will complete a college degree, it is not surprising so few enter graduate studies. When Latina/o students do enter higher education, few attend those colleges or universities that are gateways to graduate degrees. Regardless of the type of higher education institution they attend, Latinas/os often encounter social and academic isolation, unaffordable costs, and lack of support. This historic under-representation has created a vicious cycle of limited social and economic mobility. There is a paucity of the Latina/o faculty and leaders whom research shows are essential for changing campus climate and influencing institutions to adapt to the needs of a changing student body. As a result, Latina/o graduate students often have few role models, advocates or mentors, and limited support for their research agendas.By reviewing the pipeline from kindergarten through university, this book provides the needed data and insights to effect change for policy makers, administrators, faculty, and staff; and material for reflection for aspiring Latina/o Ph.D.s on the paths they have taken and the road ahead. The book then addresses the unique experiences and challenges faced by Latina/os in doctoral programs, and offers guidance for students and those responsible for them. Chapters cover issues of gender and generational differences, the role of culture in the graduate school, mentorship, pursuing research, and professional development opportunities for Latina/os.The book closes with the voices of by Latina/o students who are currently pursuing or recently completed their doctoral degree. These narratives describe their cultural and educational journeys, providing insight into their personal and professional experiences. These stories bring alive the graduate experience for anyone interested in successful recruitment, retention, and graduation of Latina/o doctoral students – an inspiration and guidance to those aspiring to the doctorate.

Have you ever been kissed by a refreshing white cloud? Do you remember how its caress would leave you wanting more and waiting for its next lingering touch? White clouds were not strangers in the projects during the summer months. These refreshing vapors provided a welcome break from the sweltering heat of the sun's rays beating down on the concrete palaces that St. Louis called the projects. The fluffy mist was the unifying factor in the projects that all the kids loved. We inhaled the clouds and embraced the cooling mist as it danced around our bodies. Who would have thought that these mystical veils had the potential to destroy my hopes and dreams? Dr. Vanessa Howard's book From the Projects to a Ph.D. discusses humble beginnings, challenges in pursuing higher education, and the determination needed to succeed. You will be inspired by the resiliency of the human spirit, as she shares personal insights, and experiences of racial inequities that shaped, but did not define her life. Although her experiences shared in this book are not unique, they provide a glimpse into the "other side of America" rarely shared with other cultures. Within these pages, you will find strategies to assist readers in becoming more culturally responsive. She prays this story will be a catalyst for change and offer hope to those who need it most. When we know better, we should do better. This is a must-read for those who are passionate about reform in the areas of education, law, gender equity, and racial justice.
Thesis Writing for Master's and Ph.D. Program
This book on Thesis Writing for Master’s and Ph.D. program focuses on the difficulties students encounter with regard to choosing a guide; selecting an appropriate research title considering the available resources; conducting research; and ways to overcome the hardships they face while researching, writing and preparing their dissertation for submission. Thesis writing is an essential skill that medical and other postgraduates are expected to learn during their academic career as a mandatory partial requirement in order to receive the Master’s degree. However, at the majority of medical schools, writing a thesis is largely based on self-learning, which adds to the burden on students due to the tremendous amount of time spent learning the writing skills in addition to their exhausting clinical and academic work. Due to the difficulties faced during the early grooming years and lack of adequate guidance, acquiring writing skills continues to be a daunting task for most students. This book addresses these difficulties and deficiencies and provides comprehensive guidance, from selecting the research title to publishing in a scientific journal.
Run Related Probability Functions and their Application to Industrial Statistics: Ph.D. Thesis
Various procedures that are used in the field of industrial statistics, include switching/stopping rules between different levels of inspection. These rules are usually based on a sequence of previous inspections, and involve the concept of runs. A run is a sequence of identical events, such as a sequence of successes in a slot machine. However, waiting for a run to occur is not merely a superstitious act. In quality control, as in many other fields (e.g. reliability of engineering systems, DNA sequencing, psychology, ecology, and radar astronomy), the concept of runs is widely applied as the underlying basis for many rules. Rules that are based on the concept of runs, or "run-rules", are very intuitive and simple to apply (for example: "use reduced inspection following a run of 5 acceptable batches"). In fact, in many cases they are designed according to empirical rather than probabilistic considerations. Therefore, there is a need to investigate their theoretical properties and to assess their performance in light of practical requirements. In order to investigate the properties of such systems their complete probabilistic structure should be revealed. Various authors addressed the occurrence of runs from a theoretical point of view, with no regard to the field of industrial statistics or quality control. The main problem has been to specify the exact probability functions of variables which are related to runs. This problem was tackled by different methods (especially for the family of "order k distributions"), some of them leading to expressions for the probability function. In this work we present a method for computing the exact probability functions of variables which originate in systems with switching or stopping rules that are based on runs (including k-order variables as a special case). We use Feller's (1968) methods for obtaining the probability generating functions of run related variables, as well as for deriving the closed form of the probability function from its generating function by means of partial fraction expansion. We generalize Feller's method for other types of distributions that are based on runs, and that are encountered in the field of industrial statistics. We overcome the computational complexity encountered by Feller for computing the exact probability function, using efficient numerical methods for finding the roots of polynomials, simple recursive formulas, and popular mathematical software packages (e.g. Matlab and Mathematica). We then assess properties of some systems with switching/stopping run rules, and propose modifications to such rules.
