The Snare by Rafael Sabatini, Fiction, Action & Adventure
Wellington's mission was to save Portugal from the irresistible armies of Napoleon -- and he had a plan to do it. A hard plan, but a good one. The problem was traitors in high places: traitors secretly opposing his methods and playing the spy for the enemy. All depended on secrecy and unity of action. And then a young British officer made a moronic blunder, and gave the plotters their chance to upset the delicate balance. Their influence caused the Portuguese Council of Regency to demand that the culprit be made a scapegoat. He was at large -- and the man responsible for his capture and execution was his own brother-in-law, Sir Terrence Amoy. Amoy, British adjutant-general at Lisbon.

Winner, Alistair MacLeod Prize for Short Fiction Long-Shortlisted, ReLit Award (Short Fiction)"You go through life convinced you’re going to get diabetes like your old man and one day you choke to death on chicken gristle, and the autopsy shows your blood sugars were perfect."The seventeen stories in Elaine McCluskey’s latest collection, Rafael Has Pretty Eyes, follow characters who have reached a four-way stop in life; some are deciding whether to follow the signs or defy them; others find a sinkhole forming beneath their feet.A former fast-talking, big-bucks radio host now lives as a divorced payday loaner working in a strip mall; a football wide receiver at a small Canadian university works the night shift as a bouncer while recovering from his third concussion; a well-liked city councilor is arrested on a packed bus. As one character puts it, "life is just one extended series of anecdotes strung together until they kill you."Set in the Maritimes but transcending regional boundaries, McCluskey’s stories are experimental, sometimes provocative, and often about those living on the margins. Smart, compassionate and unsparing, Rafael Has Pretty Eyes explores the absurdity and interconnectedness of a life adrift.

Cuban painter Rafael Soriano (1920–2015) was an acclaimed master of geometric abstraction and a global figure in the twentieth-century art world—his work resonated with such international artists of Latin American origin as Roberto Matta, Rufino Tamayo, and Wifredo Lam. As a result of the revolution in Cuba in 1959, Soriano left the country in 1962 for the United States. The effect of the Cuban revolution on his art as well as his aesthetics in general are the focus of this book, an unprecedented examination of his entire oeuvre. Featuring more than ninety paintings, pastels, and drawings, this bilingual English-Spanish catalog for an accompanying exhibition at the McMullen Museum of Art, Boston College; the Long Beach Museum of Art; and the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University begins with a contextual analysis of Soriano’s relationship to the Cuban avant-garde and his position within the emerging mid-century modernists. Essays then trace his evolving styles, examining his work through the lens of surrealism and European and Latin American transnational aesthetics. The idea of exile and struggle is a leitmotif and is framed within questions of transcendence and spirituality. Taken together, the contributions suggest both Soriano’s rootedness in Latin America and his striving for universality. The most comprehensive exploration of Soriano’s work to date, Rafael Soriano: The Artist as Mystic deftly takes the idea of exile and struggle so prominent in the artist’s work and frames it within important questions of transcendence and spirituality. This book will be essential reading for anyone intrigued by Latin American and modern art.
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Border Tuner
As a large-scale, participatory installation, Lozano-Hemmer's "bridges of light" create a channel of communication beyond the limits of the nation-state Composed of powerful "bridges" of searchlights and sound across the US–Mexico border, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's (born 1967) work Border Tuner forges a platform for local dialogue between El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, at a time of fraught border rhetoric, militarized surveillance and nationalist violence. In opposition to the modes of control and the regulation of bodies profusely developed along the border line, Lozano-Hemmer proposed a momentary alternative. To this extent, it is a critically important artistic work that strove to cultivate relations beyond the limits and perpetual violence of the nation-state. The 12 essays comprising this bilingual English/Spanish record—written by a range of historians, theorists, curators, artists and cultural workers—enter into convivial exchange with the voices and language, bodies and performances of those who activated the work.
