Becoming Arab in London

Becoming Arab in London

Ramy M. K. Aly

Pluto Press
2015
pokkari
This is the first ethnographic exploration of gender, race and class amongst British born or raised Arabs in London. It takes a critical look at the idea of 'Arab-ness' and the ways in which their ethnicities are created and expressed in the city. Looking at everyday spaces, encounters and discourses, the book explores the lives of young people and the ways in which they achieve 'Arab-ness'. It uncovers stories of growing up in London, the social codes at Shisha cafes and the sexual politics and ethnic self-portraits which are present in British-Arab men and women. Drawing on the work of Judith Butler, Becoming Arab in London reveals the need to move away from the notion of identity and towards a performative reading of race, gender and class. What emerges is an innovative contribution to the study of diaspora and difference in contemporary Britain.

My Heart Became a Bomb

My Heart Became a Bomb

Ramy al-Asheq

University of Texas Press
2021

My Heart Became a Bomb is the first collection of poetry by Syrian-Palestinian poet Ramy al-Asheq to be translated into English. Poignant and raw, these poems take the reader along a path of forced emigration from Bashar al-Assad's prisons in Syria to Amsterdam to Auschwitz to Berlin, Germany, where Al-Asheq is now creating a new home. By turns melancholy and reflective, celebratory and hopeful, Al-Asheq's newly translated poems offer the English-reading audience a contemporary perspective on the experience of exile in a world facing the phenomeno of mass migration, whether for political or environmental reasons. The translations are the result of a long collaboration between Al-Asheq and Thompson (who also edited this collection). Raising questions about the nature of love, identity, and the role of poetry in the face of constant flux and great uncertainty, My Heart Became a Bomb introduces an important new voice to the world of contemporary poetry.

Find the motivation; Join the motivation, Ram-Fit My name is Ramy Eldakkak, and I live in the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia. What do I do? I am an accountant. I studied at the Pennsylvania State University and now in the mist of finishing up my master's degree. I grew up in South Philadelphia about several blocks from the famous Geno's. I love their steaks and I'm glad to say I still enjoy them till this day. Throughout my elementary and middle school days I battled weight gain and obesity. I never took the warnings from the doctors seriously and kept doing what I was doing. The name calling never got to me and I just fit in, but I still had insecurities. High school came and I was still getting by with the way I looked. Now it was finally time for college, and being chubby was not the style I wanted to portray for myself; I knew I had to do something about it. I went from 270 to 200 in 4 months and started looking great. What I didn't know is I set myself for failure. After I went home that summer I gained most of it back at a high pace without even noticing. My body never adjusted to the change. Now that I graduated I promised myself to take care of my most precious possession, my body and my health. Starting January 1st I started adjusting my life style to slowly change. I already let my body experience a shocking weight gain before and this time I was not gaining it back. They say that repeatedly doing the same thing and expecting different results is equal to insanity, so I changed my lifestyle, and I found a solution. Time for us to recognize how great our bodies are and start fueling them with the basics and not the chemicals that promise results Every meal is recorded, every workout is recorded, and progress photos are there to help you see exactly what I did. Secrets? There are no secrets it's just everything you've always known put into one place. I discuss ways for cleansing your system and speeding your metabolism and give you the motivation and inspiration to do so almost every day. The stories from the past that made me who I am today are there. The stories that fueled my success are in there too. I even record the days where I'm lacking my motivation because my journey is REAL. Read learn laugh and enjoy the story of Ram-Fit. I challenge you to keep up with my book. I challenge you try a workout. I challenge you to know the meaning of Ram-Fit...do you accept?
