Physicians typically have limited knowledge about the laboratory tests which most effectively work-up a patient presenting with bleeding or clotting manifestations; which tests best evaluate the efficacy of antithrombotic agents; and the clinically significant impact of anticoagulant agents on routine and special coagulation assay results. This practical guide will help physicians to appropriately order and interpret coagulation tests to identify the underlying hemostasis disorder or develop a timely action plan for the benefit of their patient. Interpretation of Results of Routine and Special Coagulation Tests: A Practical Guide is a concise, comprehensive, and accessible reference text for any medical professional who must order, understand, or interpret tests of the hemostasis system. For each test, this book provides the causes of abnormal results, including what can lead to false positive and negative results. When possible, information is provided in table form for quick reference, such as the impact of commonly used anticoagulants on the results of hemostasis tests. This practical guide also includes tests that evaluate global hemostasis and clot lysis by viscoelastometry, as well as a discussion of laboratory monitoring of anticoagulants, antiplatelet agents, antifibrinolytics, and thrombolytics. Written by an expert author team, this easy-to-use guide will be a vital resource for residents, fellows, and practitioners.

The ability to conceptualize an economic problem verbally, to formulate it as a mathematical model, and then represent the mathematics in software so that the model can be solved on a computer is a crucial skill for economists. Computational Economics contains well-known models--and some brand-new ones--designed to help students move from verbal to mathematical to computational representations in economic modeling. The authors' focus, however, is not just on solving the models, but also on developing the ability to modify them to reflect one's interest and point of view. The result is a book that enables students to be creative in developing models that are relevant to the economic problems of their times. Unlike other computational economics textbooks, this book is organized around economic topics, among them macroeconomics, microeconomics, and finance. The authors employ various software systems--including MATLAB, Mathematica, GAMS, the nonlinear programming solver in Excel, and the database systems in Access--to enable students to use the most advantageous system. The book progresses from relatively simple models to more complex ones, and includes appendices on the ins and outs of running each program. The book is intended for use by advanced undergraduates and professional economists and even, as a first exposure to computational economics, by graduate students. * Organized by economic topics * Progresses from simple to more complex models * Includes instructions on numerous software systems * Encourages customization and creativity

As an addition to the European postgraduate training system for young neurosurgeons we began to publish in 1974 this series of Advances and Technical Standards in Neurosurgery which was later sponsored by the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies. This series was first discussed in 1972 at a combined meeting of the Italian and German Neurosurgical Societies in Taormina, the founding fathers of the series being Jean Brihaye, Bernard Pertuiset, Fritz Loew and Hugo Krayenbiihl. Thus were established the principles of European co operation which have been born from the European spirit, flourished in the European Association, and have throughout been associated with this series. The fact that the English language is well on the way to becoming the international medium at European scientific conferences is a great asset in terms of mutual understanding. Therefore we have decided to publish all contributions in English, regardless of the native language of the authors. All contributions are submitted to the entire editorial board before publi cation of any volume. Our series is not intended to compete with the publications of original scientific papers in other neurosurgical journals. Our intention is, rather, to present fields of neurosurgery and related areas in which important recent advances have been made. The contributions are written by specialists in the given fields and constitute the first part of each volume.

No man or woman ever encounters Jesus and remains unchanged. REUBEN is the story of a young Galilean fisherman who encounters Jesus at the time of His crucifixion and witnesses the event first-hand. The impact of this and the subsequent events has a profound effect on him and his encounters with Mary Magdalene and Jesus' disciple John not only cause radical change in his life but also impact the lives of those around him.

Peter De Vries

Harking from the golden age of fiction set in American suburbia - the school of John Updike and Cheever - these three works from the great American humorist Peter De Vries look with laughter upon its lawns, its cocktails, and its slightly unreal feeling of comfort. De Vries' classic situation comedy The Tunnel of Love follows the interactions of a socially insecure, pun-loving family man, an officious lady caseworker from an adoption agency, and a chauvinist pig - all suburban neighbors who know far too much about one another's private lives in this goofy and gently hilarious tale of marital quibbles. A manic epic, Reuben, Reuben is really three books in one, tied together by a 1950s suburban Connecticut setting and hyper-literate cast of characters. A corruptible chicken farmer fearful for the fate of his beloved town, a womanizing poet from Wales (Dylan Thomas in disguise), and a hapless British poet-cum-actor-and-agent all take turns as narrator, revealing different, even conflicting views. But alcoholism, sexism, small-mindedness, and calamity challenge the high spirits of De Vries' well-read suburbanites. Without a Stitch in Time, a selection of forty-six articles and stories written for the New Yorker between 1943 and 1973, offers pun-filled autobiographical vignettes that reveal the source of De Vries' nervous wit: the cognitive dissonance between his Calvinist upbringing in 1920s Chicago and the all-too-perfect postwar world.
