The Racial Problem in the Works of Richard Wright and James Baldwin

The Racial Problem in the Works of Richard Wright and James Baldwin

Jean-Francois Gounard's examination of the writings of Richard Wright and James Baldwin achieves a balance between the fiery Wright and the placid Baldwin. Gounard's two studies convincingly prove a complementary relationship between the works of these two American writers. Both reflect the profound desire of black Americans to be recognized as first class citizens: Wright aroused white America's conscience, Baldwin made that conscience experience guilt. According to Gounard, this complementary relationship, and their leading roles in American race relations, make their work seminal. Understanding the evolution of Wright's and Baldwin's ideas is essential to understanding the evolution of the American race problem. This analytical study covers both the literary works and the political and philosophical essays of these two men. It is a valuable study for courses in Afro-American studies and African literature.American society has not yet given definitive, hopeful, answers to the questions raised by this study. Gounard relies on biographical elements and textual analysis to retrace meticulously the careers of these two writers who deeply influenced their era. This study stresses the evolution of their ideas in their essays, articles, and interviews. Emphasis is also placed on how those ideas were applied in their novels, short stories, plays, and poems. Gounard also introduces the points of view of various critics. This in-depth study follows a chronological path covering a thirty year period (1940-1970), concluding with a comprehensive bibliography of the two authors' works--a most valuable resource tool.

A writer perhaps best known for the revolutionary works Black Boy and Native Son, Richard Wright also worked as a journalist during one of the most explosive periods of the 20th century. From 1937 to 1938, Wright turned out more than two hundred articles for the Daily Worker, the newspaper that served as the voice of the American Communist Party. Byline, Richard Wright assembles more than one hundred of those articles plus two of Wright’s essays from New Masses, revealing to readers the early work of an American icon. As both reporter and Harlem bureau chief, Wright covered most of the major and minor events, personalities, and issues percolating through the local, national, and global scenes in the late 1930s. Because the Daily Worker wasn’t a mainstream paper, editors gave Wright free rein to cover the stories he wanted, and he tackled issues that no one else covered. Although his peers criticised his journalistic writing, these articles offer revealing portraits of Depression-era America rendered in solid, vivid prose. Featuring Earle V. Bryant’s informative, detailed introduction and commentary contextualising the compiled articles, Byline, Richard Wright provides insight into the man before he achieved fame as a novelist, short story writer, and internationally recognised voice of social protest. This collection opens new territory in Wright studies, and fans of Wright’s novels will delight in discovering the lost material of this literary great.

Kantian Dignity and Trolley Problems in the Literature of Richard Wright

This book examines the literature of African-American author Richard Wright and the philosophy of Immanuel Kant, arguing that Wright was not only the foremost proponent of minoritarian protest literature, but also a groundbreaking minoritarian exponent of philosophical literature. In presenting this argument, the volume defends trolley problems from the criticism that some philosophers level against them by promoting their use as an interpretive tool for literary scholars. Starting with Martha C. Nussbaum’s interventions in literary theory concerning Henry James and perceptive equilibrium, this book draws on the philosophical thoughts of her contemporaries—Philippa Foot, John Rawls, Judith Jarvis Thomson, and Derek Parfit—to analyze Uncle Tom’s Children, especially “Down by the Riverside,” alongside other works by Wright. This approach emphasizes Wright’s recognition of the importance and integrity of Kant’s concept of dignity.
Institutional racism and the search for African American masculinity and identity in selected works of Richard Wright
What is positive Black masculinity? Who should define it? Khefa Nosakhere's first nonfiction book, Institutional racism and the search for African American masculinity and identity in selected works of Richard Wright is a multi layered analysis of how American racism shaped the lives of 3 men. Bigger Thomas (Native Son) Richard Wright (Black Boy) and Fred Daniels (The Man Who Lived Underground). This is a work that will continue the discussion of rebuilding and refocusing on the traditional nuclear Black family. A strong nuclear family is a broad based answer to most of our problems. Since the centerpiece of the nuclear family is the man, understanding the socio-economic and political climate of this country is vital. Everyone seems to be able to define themselves freely and without argument except for African American males/men. A short Google search confirms when the term "Black masculinity" is typed in, numerous negative terms appear. Why is this the case? The answer is interwoven into the racist history of the United States. Professor Khefa Nosakhere is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. He holds a BA in Literature and Language from the University of Southern California as well as a Masters degree in literature. His literary specialities are: 20th century literature, major authors, African American culture and Black Literary Criticism.

Le syst me de stratification raciale n'est pas aussi facile appliquer que le souhaiterait l'id ologie de la diff rence biologique m me si, selon les crit res de la culture universelle, un Noir, un Jaune et un Blanc sont cens s se distinguer ais ment. Now an HBO Film "If one had to identify the single most influential shaping force in modern Black literary history, one would probably have to point to Wright and the publication of Native Son." - Henry Louis Gates Jr.Right from the start, Bigger Thomas had been headed for jail. It could have been for assault or petty larceny; by chance, it was for murder and rape. Native Son tells the story of this young black man caught in a downward spiral after he kills a young white woman in a brief moment of panic.Set in Chicago in the 1930s, Richard Wright's powerful novel is an unsparing reflection on the poverty and feelings of hopelessness experienced by people in inner cities across the country and of what it means to be black in America. This abridged edition of Native Son reprints the original edition from 1940. It also includes an essay by Wright, How "Bigger" was Born, as well as an afterword by John Reilly.
