Culture in Economics

Culture in Economics

Sjoerd Beugelsdijk; Robbert Maseland

Cambridge University Press
2014
pokkari
Many economists now accept that informal institutions and culture play a crucial role in economic outcomes. Driven by the work of economists like Nobel laureates Douglass North and Gary Becker, there is an important body of work that invokes cultural and institutional factors to build a more comprehensive and realistic theory of economic behavior. This book provides a comprehensive overview of research in this area, sketching the main premises and challenges faced by the field. The first part introduces and explains the various theoretical approaches to studying culture in economics, going back to Smith and Weber, and addresses the methodological issues that need to be considered when including culture in economics. The second part of the book then provides readers with a series of examples that show how the cultural approach can be used to explain economic phenomena in four different areas: entrepreneurship, trust, international business and comparative corporate governance.

I genitori sono stati identificati e marcati all'inizio dell'esperimento.

Air Force units have found differences between authorized and actual numbers of personnel, partly because of deployments. Using historical and other data and interviews, the authors assessed the wing-level effects of these disparities including skill levels and personnel tempo. The recommendations include improvements in manpower bookkeeping and requirement determination, use of dynamic simulation models, and implementation of suitable metrics.

Appointment scrolls are required for officers to enter the services and to take on service in a different grade, military service, or component. Researchers examine processes used to meet scrolling requirements, identify gaps and redundancies that create administrative burdens and delays, and provide recommendations for increasing the efficiency of the scroll creation process.

Reliable Distributed Computing with the Isis Toolkit presents technical results documenting various internal aspects of Isis along with less technical results illustrating how systems are used to develop closely coupled and fault-tolerant application environments. The text consists of 20 papers that document Isis and describe its important applications. The first section deals with the underlying ideas of the Isis system. The second section describes design alternatives, the Horus system, integrating security in a group-oriented distributed system, and high availability in a real-time system. The third section examines the protocols used in Isis and Horus. The last section contains user-contributed papers on Isis applications and tools.

In this memoir the authors present proofs of basic results, including those developed so far by Harold Bell, for the plane fixed point problem: Does every map of a non-separating plane continuum have a fixed point? Some of these results had been announced much earlier by Bell but without accessible proofs.

Because test scores that are part of its enlisted promotion system are not standardized, the U.S. Air Force emphasizes longevity and test-taking ability differently and randomly across and within specialties. Random emphasis implies that the Air Force cannot be sure it promotes individuals with the highest potential. The authors discuss a range of predictable outcomes the Air Force could achieve by adopting various standardization strategies. This book examines the practice of not standardizing the test scores that are part of the U.S. Air Force enlisted promotion system and discusses possible standardization strategies.
