The Long, Lingering Shadow

The Long, Lingering Shadow

Robert J. Cottrol

University of Georgia Press
2013
sidottu
Students of American history know of the law’s critical role in systematizing a racial hierarchy in the United States. Showing that this history is best appreciated in a comparative perspective, The Long, Lingering Shadow looks at the parallel legal histories of race relations in the United States, Brazil, and Spanish America. Robert J. Cottrol takes the reader on a journey from the origins of New World slavery in colonial Latin America to current debates and litigation over affirmative action in Brazil and the United States, as well as contemporary struggles against racial discrimination and Afro-Latin invisibility in the Spanish-speaking nations of the hemisphere.Ranging across such topics as slavery, emancipation, scientific racism, immigration policies, racial classifications, and legal processes, Cottrol unravels a complex odyssey. By the eve of the Civil War, the U.S. slave system was rooted in a legal and cultural foundation of racial exclusion unmatched in the Western Hemisphere. That system’s legacy was later echoed in Jim Crow, the practice of legally mandated segregation. Jim Crow in turn caused leading Latin Americans to regard their nations as models of racial equality because their laws did not mandate racial discrimination— a belief that masked very real patterns of racism throughout the Americas. And yet, Cottrol says, if the United States has had a history of more-rigid racial exclusion, since the Second World War it has also had a more thorough civil rights revolution, with significant legal victories over racial discrimination. Cottrol explores this remarkable transformation and shows how it is now inspiring civil rights activists throughout the Americas.

Explaining Long-Term Trends in Health and Longevity is a collection of essays by Nobel laureate Robert W. Fogel on the theory and measurement of ageing and health-related variables. Dr Fogel analyzes historic data on height, health, nutrition and life expectation to provide a clearer understanding of the past, illustrate the costs and benefits of using such measures and note the difficulties of drawing conclusions from data intended for different purposes. Dr Fogel explains how the basic findings of the anthropometric approach to historical analysis have helped reinterpret the nature of economic growth. Rising life expectancies and lower disease rates in countries experiencing economic growth highlight the importance of improving nutrition and agricultural productivity.

A Long And Indeterminate Perambulation
"I was deeply moved. It is a brilliant meditation on life and death. Elegantly written and utterly original, this book will surely endure." ROBERT OLEN BUTLER, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of 'A Good Scent From A Strange Mountain' Robert McGowan's 'A Long and Indeterminate Perambulation' is not a conventional piece of storytelling. Told from the viewpoint of a 75-year-old "philosopher artist," this novella is driven far more by character and idea than by narrative. This book presents her diary entries following a more or less daily walk around her neighborhood. These entries provide consistently insightful views on the deepest of subjects...Life, war, death and art. Poignant, thought-provoking and not infrequently controversial, 'A Long and Indeterminate Perambulation' is always stirring. "Heartfelt and utterly beautiful, yet grounded in strength, integrity, and conviction. McGowan at his very best." CHRISTINE COTE, Founder, Shanti Arts

Robin Long Bird was born Robert Copeland, but extreme circumstances and devastating threats from several spy agencies throughout the world required a name change for his personal safety. Robert Copeland had been hired to take secret pictures for a cartel of international spy agencies linked by their need to share information without sharing their true identities. Robert Copeland failed to turn over this secret information to any of the agencies demanding it and not even to the covert American agency that authorized his service. He was treated badly by the agency that hired him, which also tried to prevent him from being paid for his summer of spy work. With the help of some special friends, he was able to get his payment and escape into an unknown and untraceable identity. His revenge for his poor treatment was in keeping the secret information. This story is about Robin's ability to hide from those who wanted the information that only he had access to. Robert Long Bird has one unique feature which is extremely rare and not known by many, and that is his ability to move between dimensions and to take objects and people with him. This may seem unlikely, but when the concept of dimensional travel is understood, the events in this book become a possibility.

The purpose of this book is to tell a story about how my family's lives have been affected by Alzheimer's. Some may ask why I would want to do this. Why would I want to go back and relive what may be better to forget, or try to forget? Also, many have lived through, and may still be in similar life situations. Most have remained silent. Why should I consider public exposure of such personal experiences? And would my wife want me to tell you about some of the things she may have said or done as her mental capability slipped away?To answer the first question, to those to whom this story may be all too familiar, maybe you will find some mental and emotional release from reading my words. You've been there and done that - or close to it anyway. To those who have not had a similar experience, chances are that you may know someone who has had or is having a similar experience. And, as the population increases, you may sometime be living through this kind of loss yourself. I hope you will find these writings helpful.Would my wife approve? She has never seemed to be actually aware of what was happening to her. But both her sisters-in-law had Alzheimer's, so she saw the effect on her brothers. I'm sure she would want me to write about our experience if it would help others through this long farewell.

The first eleven chapters of Genesis (Adam, Eve, Noah) are to the twenty-first century what the virgin birth was to the nineteenth century: an impossibility. A technical scientific exegesis of Genesis 1-11, however, reveals not only the lost rivers of Eden and the garden's location, but the date of the flood, the length of the Genesis days, and the importance of comets in the creation of the world. These were hidden in the Hebrew text, now illuminated by modern cosmology, archaeology. and biology. The internet-friendly linguistic tools described in this book make it possible to resolve the location, the extent, and the destruction of Eden and Noah's flood. Ancient Egyptian, Greek, Norse, Sumerian, and Sanskrit mythology are all found to support this new interpretation of Genesis. Combining science, myth, and the Genesis accounts paints a vivid picture of the genetic causes and consequences of the greatest flood of the human race. It also draws attention to the acute peril our present civilization faces as it follows the same path as its long-forgotten, antediluvian ancestors. Discover why Genesis has never been so possible, so relevant as it is today.

Robert Dobrusin has spent many years reflecting on Judaism, its theology, and its practice as rabbi of Beth Israel Congregation of Ann Arbor, Michigan. He has now compiled some of his most inspiring sermons and other spiritual and moral lessons in one collection, The Long Way Around.Dobrusin uses everyday events and pop culture icons to explore larger themes of community, identity, and faith. For example, he explains what Charlie Brown, situational comedies, music, baseball, and our pets can teach us about Judaism. For both devout Jews and people who are wondering what Judaism can reveal about the world, Dobrusin's words can be both a comfort and a challenge. He includes chapters on loss, tragedy, morals, and identity but keeps his tone light and upbeat. Dobrusin shares memories of growing up, exploring Judaism, and finding his own identity inside and outside of the Jewish community. He also offers loving tributes to his father and mother, his most significant teachers.Although Dobrusin originally wrote his sermons for a Jewish audience and often focuses on Jewish culture and identity, people of all faiths can learn quite a bit from his warm wisdom.

Newly enlisted in the Army during World War II, 21-year-old Bob Max soon found himself recruited into the Fort Dix Swing Band to play alongside some of the top musicians in the country--sidemen who performed with the big bands of Tommy Dorsey, Les Brown, Harry James, and Benny Goodman. Bob was thrilled. One day his name appeared on a list of recruits to be shipped out for basic training, preparation for ultimate combat. Bandleader Jack Leonard arranged for the order to be set aside, but feeling the call of duty, Bob chose to ship out anyway. He told Jack that he expected to back with the band someday. "Kid," Jack said, "you leave now and you're not ever coming back..."
