Galicia is a fascinating part of Green Spain, the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula, and sits in the north western most part, surrounded on two sides by the sea and on a third by Portugal. This short anthology contains writings about Galicia, including several pieces about the Ribeira Sacra, the Sacred Riverbank. Included are stories and articles about its people and its landscape, including the seasons in the vineyards. Wine is a liquid that flows throughout Spain, and in the deep valleys of the Ribeira Sacra region the grapes and their harvest hold an even more special place in the hearts of the people.Galicia is a also a land of close families and small villages that have existed almost unchanged for centuries. We hope you enjoy this brief look at an ancient land, one full of generous people and natural splendours, and agree that there is indeed a lot of good in a life in Galicia.

Engraved Prints of Texas, 1554-1900

Mavis P. Kelsey; Robin Brandt Hutchison

Texas A M University Press

For centuries Texas has fired the imagination of artists as well as explorers and settlers. Before modern photography, engravings were the principal type of illustration used by artists to portray images of the state. Now, in this extensive catalogue, authors Mavis P. Kelsey, Sr., and Robin Brandt Hutchison have surveyed all engraved illustrations about Texas published before 1900. Engraved Prints of Texas, 1554-1900 presents the whole range of early Texas history as portrayed in published engravings: from the first printed representation of a buffalo in 1554 to a 1900 view of the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston. Entries include information on more than 2,000 engravings, 470 of which are illustrated in this volume. Presented chronologically by century and decade of publication, each chapter features a brief introduction to the historical background of the era, highlighting key illustrations and placing the art within the context of major events of the period. Several topical discussions address subjects that span decades or recur as pervasive themes in illustration. Historians, teachers, and scholars will find this catalogue a useful reference for locating pictorial representations of particular events, subjects, or persons. It is an indispensable source for lovers of Texas history and an important contribution to preserving the visual record.

Tropical Forest Plant Ecophysiology

Taking readers out of the laboratory and into the humid tropical forests, this comprehensive volume explores the most recent advances occurring in tropical plant ecophysiology. Drawing on the knowledge of leading practitioners in the field, this book synthesizes a broad range of information on the ways in which tropical plants adapt to their environment and demonstrate unique physiological processes. This book is arranged into four sections which cover resource acquisition, species interactions, ecophysiological patterns within and among tropical forest communities, and the ecophysiology of forest regeneration. These sections describe plant function in relation to ecology across a wide spectrum of tropical forest species and growth forms. How do different species harvest and utilize resources from heterogeneous tropical environments? How do patterns of functional diversity reflect the overwhelming taxonomic and morphological diversity of tropical forest plants? Such fundamental questions are examined in rich detail. To illuminate the discussions further, every chapter in this book features an agenda for future research, extensive cross referencing, timely references, and the integration of ecophysiology and the demography of tropical species where the data exist. Tropical Forest Plant Ecophysiology provides plant scientists, botanists, researchers, and graduate students with important insights into the behavior of tropical plants. Biologists and foresters interested in tropical ecology and plant physiological ecologists will also benefit from this authoritative and timely resource.

A 2022 Choice Outstanding Academic TitleThis book surveys and examines the most famous philosophical arguments against building a machine with human-level intelligence. From claims and counter-claims about the ability to implement consciousness, rationality, and meaning, to arguments about cognitive architecture, the book presents a vivid history of the clash between the philosophy and AI. Tellingly, the AI Wars are mostly quiet now. Explaining this crucial fact opens new paths to understanding the current resurgence AI (especially, deep learning AI and robotics), what happens when philosophy meets science, and the role of philosophy in the culture in which it is embedded. Organising the arguments into four core topics - 'Is AI possible', 'Architectures of the Mind', 'Mental Semantics and Mental Symbols' and 'Rationality and Creativity' - this book shows the debate that played out between the philosophers on both sides of the question, and, as well, the debate between philosophers and AI scientists and engineers building AI systems. Up-to-date and forward-looking, the book is packed with fresh insights and supporting material, including:- Accessible introductions to each war, explaining the background behind the main arguments against AI- Each chapter details what happened in the AI wars, the legacy of the attacks, and what new controversies are on the horizon.- Extensive bibliography of key readings

This introduction is for anyone looking to understand the debates that have shaped the philosophy of AI and the arguments that will define its future. It shows us what AI has been doing since its invention in the 1950s – pointing us back, repeatedly, to the philosophical questions humans have always faced: questions about knowledge, meaning, and how we should behave toward each other and toward the rest of the world.

The study of animal behaviour has become one of the fastest growing b- logical disciplines in recent decades. This development can be easily - ferred, for example, from the steady increase in the total number of pub- cations on any aspect of animal behaviour, in particular also in journals with a more general readership (e. g. Nature, Proceedings of the Royal - ciety or Current Biology), the ever-increasing number of participants at - ternational conferences (e. g. IEC or ISBE), and from the growing numbers of students choosing courses in this field. This development has several causes, of which I find three particularly compelling. First, it is incre- ingly being appreciated that behaviour is the crucial level at which an in- vidual s genotype and phenotype interface with the environment. Rec- nising behaviour as the main mechanism animals employ to ascertain their homeostasis, growth, survival and reproduction therefore provides a deep understanding of organismal integration and adaptation. Second, the ast- ishing success of the study of animal behaviour also has importantly to do with the intellectual flexibility and methodological inter-disciplinarity - quired for comprehensive analyses of behaviour. Today, students of beh- iour are jacks-of-all-trades; importing, applying and improving methods from many neighbouring disciplines, such as molecular genetics, physi- ogy or micro-electronics, as well as concepts and theories from less ob- ous sources, such as economics or sociology, for example."

It is an uncharacteristically rainy night when Robyn Briggs and her husband, George, return home early from a night out to retrieve their forgotten theater tickets. Robyn's grandfather, Joshua, volunteered to babysit their four-year-old daughter, Debbie. When Robyn enters the room and surprises her grandfather buttoning his Levies, Robyn's ensuing reactions cause Grandpa Josh to fall on his head and lose consciousness. After seeing Grandpa Josh fall, Debbie is too young and upset explain what happened.Robyn's mother, Joanne, supports Joshua's story that Debbie had spit up on him and he was only cleaning his pants. Robyn questions the explanation and sets out to find her biological grandmother and two of her aunts who have been banned from the family under a cloud of secrecy. Robyn's determined search leads her from San Antonio to Los Angeles to Paris.Robyn is the heartrending tale of a mother's gritty pursuit to unearth her family's secret past as she attempts to protect her young daughter from a potential child molester.Self-Publishing Review: Skipping between past and the present, it is an epic tale about how sexual abuse has affected people over generations ... Robyn is a fairly difficult book to read for its subject alone, but it is also a well-constructed book, evidently both a hugely painted and subtly drawn history of one family's tragic pastReviewed by F.T. Donereau The thread of the story involving Jo and her sisters left me astonished; it is so well done, with all its intricacies, all its fraught tensions carved out perfectly. I believe Mr. Stott, as an artist, has no fear. ... he not only shone light on truth, he gave us a story worth telling, worth knowing, and helped us learn.Cover Graphics by MSVisuals
