The Master Spirit of the Age

The Master Spirit of the Age

Creators of the modern industrial state, engineers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were part of a rising force or urban, middle-class experts. The vanguard of this élite, engineers embraced a vision of a new social order and believed that as society's natural leaders their special destiny was to solve social problems with engineering methods. Unfortunately, this perception of engineers was not adopted by others, and engineers felt unrecognized and unrewarded. While they possessed expertise essential to industry, as salaried employees living on fixed incomes they could neither control their professional lives nor protect themselves from competition. Unlike the practice of law and medicine, engineering had no legal standing; anyone could practise. In this study of the profession as it evolved in Canada, J. Rodney Millard explores the issues that shaped engineers' perceptions of their work and its place in society. He explains how engineers, determined to raise their status, adopted a strategy of professional development. They organized engineering schools, societies, and journals, and ultimately obtained licensing and regulatory powers. Established to restrict competition and monopolize practice, licensing laws were a collectivist assault on the ideals of laissez-faire. Licensing associations represented the triumph of young protectionist engineers over older free market proponents. This victory heralded the rise of an aggressive, self-confident new middle class in Canada and the western world. Focusing on engineers, rather than engineering, Millard offers a social history of an important group of organized civil engineers and their struggle to obtain power and prestige. It is the story not so much of how engineers changed society, but how they survived the change through collective action.

Lessons can be learned from major fraud cases. Whether the victim is a company, public agency, nonprofit, foundation, or charity, there is a high likelihood that many of these frauds could have been prevented or detected sooner if early Red Flag warning signs had been identified and acted upon. Fraud Prevention and Detection: Warning Signs and the Red Flag System will enable officers and directors, internal and external stakeholders, as well as outside analysts to protect themselves and their organizations against fraud by effectively detecting, analyzing, and acting on early Red Flag warning signs. Based on an empirically tested strategy, the Red Flag System reflects the authors’ more than 100 years combined experience in the investigation of fraud in high-profile, global cases in North America, Africa, Europe, and the Far East.Readers of this book will:Acquire a general awareness of the nature, characteristics, and dynamics of fraudUnderstand the process for determining whether a fraud has been committedDevelop an understanding of enterprise risk management approaches for fraud risk management, compliance risk management, and managing the risk of fraudulent financial reporting—including an understanding of the limitations inherent in these approachesLearn how to find Red Flag indicators of fraud or suspicious transactions in financial statements, budgets, and contractsKnow how to ensure that, once a Red Flag has been identified, appropriate action is taken Fraud can lead to significant financial loss as well as bad press and publicity with significant reputational impact for officers, directors, corporations, and their stakeholders. This book’s no-nonsense approach empowers those charged with protecting organizations to stop these frauds before the organization’s livelihood is jeopardized or to mitigate damage when fraud has occurred.

Following a brief description of the historical and genetic background of the condition HMS is described in relation to other connective tissue disorders, such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, the Marfan Syndrome etc. The hypermobility syndrome is distinct from hypermobility (as in one joint only), which most physiotherapists are familiar with, and this difference will be explored. Hypermobility, is something people are born with, but it does not necessarily produce symptoms. It is present in between 5-15% of the population. Many of these will suffer symptoms at some stage in their life. It may occur in childhood, adolescence, adulthood, pregnancy or old age. Each of these stages is covered in the book, with detailed information on the presentation of the condition and its management. There are contributions from a variety of medical practitioners experienced in this field:. Consultant Rheumatologist, Professor R Grahame, Consultant Paediatrician, Dr K Murray, GP, Dr E Mansi, several physiotherapists, who specialise in different areas; Rosemary Keer (adults), Alison Middleditch (adolescents), Vicky Harding (Chronic pain), Jane Simmonds (Rehabilitation) & Sue Maillard (paediatric). There will also be a contribution from Sarah Gurley-Green, past Chairperson to the Hypermobility Syndrome association. Demonstrates how to identify the condition in the clinic. Discusses treatment and management strategies. Provides examples in the form of case studies. Includes details of a comprehensive assessment procedure, which differs depending on the stage of the disorder and the age of the patient. Features contributions by experts in a range of medical fields.

Manual of Pharmacologic Calculations

Manual of Pharmacologic Calculations

This book contains a collection of quantitative procedures in common use in pharmacology and related disciplines. It is intended for students and researchers in all fields who work with drugs. Many physicians, especially those concerned with clinical pharmacology, will also find much that is useful. The procedures included may be considered "core" since they are generally applicable to all classes of drugs. Some of the procedures deal with statistics and, hence, have even wider application. In this new edition we have increased the number of procedures from 33 (in the first edition) to 48. Other procedures have been revised and expanded. Yet the basic philosophy of this new edition remains unchanged from the first. That is, the pharmacologic basis of each procedure is presented, along with the necessary formulas and one or more worked examples. An associated computer program is included for each procedure and its use is illustrated with the same worked example used in the text. The discussions of theory and the sample computations are brief and self-contained, so that all computations can be made with the aid of a pocket calculator and the statistical tables contained in Appendix A. Yet it is realized that the proliferation of lower-priced microcom puters is likely to mean that more and more readers will utilize a computer for most calculations. Accordingly, we have modified the format of the book to facilitate computer usage.

Craniofacial Deformities

Craniofacial Deformities

This book has been assembled from the radiographic and photo graphic records of patients presenting to craniofacial units on four continents over 7 years. It is our purpose to illustrate a wide range of craniofacial deformities with the technique of three-dimensional com puted tomography. Many topics are briefly addressed with descriptive text intended to amplify the accompanying images but not to exclude the need for more comprehensive references as recommended in the reading list of each chapter. The ability to generate three-dimensional radiographic images rep resents a successful integration of computed tomography with com puter graphics. Although this technique remains an electronic substi tute for the study of dry skull specimens, it offers a permanent pictorial record of anatomical structures with the opportunity for fu ture interactive data manipulation. It is hoped, therefore, that this work will assist others to gain a more complete understanding of disorders of the craniofacial region. We encourage other surgeons and investigators to examine and employ the techniques used to gather these images but also to ensure that standardized scanning regimens are adapted. The importance of data collection within its full anatomical context was borne out with many of our early studies, which were limited owing to computational con straints. Often an image requirement for surgical intervention is much less than an image necessary for strict scientific inquiry.
