Russell Kirk and the Age of Ideology

Russell Kirk and the Age of Ideology

W. McDonald

Russell Kirk, author of The Conservative Mind and A Program for Conservatives, has been regarded as one of the foremost figures of the post-World War II revival in conservative thought. While numerous commentators on contemporary political thought have acknowledged his considerable influence on the substance and direction of American conservatism, no analysis of his social and political writing has dealt extensively with the philosophical foundations of his work. In this provocative study, W. Wesley McDonald examines those foundations and demonstrates their impact on the conservative intellectual movement that emerged in the 1950s and 1960s. Kirk played a pivotal role in drawing conservatism away from the laissez-faireprinciplesoflibertarianism and toward those of a traditional community grounded in a renewed appreciation of man's social and spiritual nature and the moral prerequisites of genuine liberty. In a humane social order, a community of spirit is fostered in which generations are bound together. According to Kirk, this link is achieved through moral and social norms that transcend the particularities of time and place and, because they form the basis of genuine civilized existence, can only be neglected at great peril. These norms, reflected in religious dogmas, traditions, humane letters, social habit and custom, and prescriptive institutions, create the sources of the true community that is the final end of politics. Although this study does not challenge Kirk's debts to a predominantly Catholic and Anglo-Catholic tradition of natural law, its focus is on his appeal to historical experience as the test of sound institutions. This aspect of his thought was essential to Kirk's understanding of moral, cultural, and aesthetic norms and can be seen in his responses to American humanists Paul Elmer More and Irving Babbitt and to English and American romantic literature. Russell Kirk and the Age of Ideology is particularly relevant because of the growing interest in Kirk's legacy and the current debate over the meaning of conservatism. McDonald addresses both of those developments in the context of examining Kirk's thought, attempting to correct some of the inadequacies contained in earlier studies that assess Kirk as a political thinker. This book will serve as a significant contribution to the commentary on this fascinating figure.
Russell's Theory of Perception

Russell's Theory of Perception

In Russell's Theory of Perception, Sajahan Miah re-examines and evaluates the development of Russell's concept of perception and the relation of perception to our knowledge of the external world. With the introduction of logical construction (in which physical objects are constructed from actual and possible sense-data) Russell's theory of perception seems to become a causal theory with phenomenalist overtones. The book argues that there is a consistency of purpose and direction which motivated Russell to introduce logical construction. The purpose was to strike a compromise between his empiricism and his realism and to establish a bridge between the objects of perception and the objects of physics and common sense.
Russell and Wittgenstein on the Nature of Judgement

Russell and Wittgenstein on the Nature of Judgement

In 1911, Bertrand Russell began a historically formative interchange about the nature of logic and cognition with his student, Ludwig Wittgenstein. In 1913, Russell set to work on a manuscript, the "Theory of Knowledge", designed to move from the analysis of perception to judgement and on to knowledge of the world. After Wittgenstein interrupted Russell's daily writing with a series of objections to his doctrine of judgement and conception of logic, Russell abandoned his project in despair, leaving it unfinished. His subsequent work can be understood largely as an attempt to assimilate and respond to Wittgenstein's challenge in 1913. "Russell and Wittgenstein on the Nature of Judgement" is the first book-length treatment of Russell's decisive 1913 exchanges with Wittgenstein. Rosalind Carey incorporates little-known notes and diagrams into a new analysis of the problems Russell was facing. She also evaluates the numerous interpretations of Russell's positions and Wittgenstein's objections to them. The result is a new perspective on both these great thinkers, at a crucial point in the development of twentieth-century philosophy.

How to Handle an Anthropologist: Russell Shuttleworth, PhD interviews shaman/performance artist Frank Moore
In 1997, shaman/performance artist Frank Moore was contacted by Russell Shuttleworth, a then University of California, Berkeley graduate student, working on his doctoral dissertation. The thesis was a research study to help understand how men with moderate to severe cerebral palsy experience and interpret their search for intimacy and sexual relationships in the face of significant social and cultural barriers, or as Frank called it, "The Sexual Practices of Bay Area Men with Cerebral Palsy." He wanted to interview Frank for this thesis. That interview quickly segued into 12 years of Russell interviewing Frank about Frank's life. Meanwhile, Frank encouraged Russell to live his dreams, which resulted in the discovery of Russell's alter-ego Dr. Gruve, who dj'd a show on Frank's LUVeR internet radio station, and played the harmonica in Frank's Cherotic All-Star Band. They did 88 interviews in all, even continuing via Skype when Russell moved to Australia to teach there. Russell is now a Medical Anthropologist PhD and a member of the faculty at Deakin University in Geelong, Victoria Australia. Inside this book are the full transcripts of these interviews.
