I share this selection of remembered experiences with the intent to amuse and, with any luck, to offer support in thorny life passages toward "the light at the end of the tunnel."As unique as we are, we have startling similarities; we all need to be appreciated, to love and be loved, to help, and to care. At rare moments, we make a connection and understand one another deeply. Those times are memorable and amazing parts of our human experience.

Death in Reverse

Death in Reverse

Schwartz Ruth L.

“One chilly blue morning in May, a surgeon angled a six-inch cut along my side, then reached in and removed my healthy right kidney. Four hours later, he spliced that kidney into my partner Ana’s thigh, and her ‘death in reverse’ began". A medical drama, a memoir, and a love story all in one, Death in Reverse chronicles Ruth Schwartz’s life with her partner, Ana, during the tumultuous twelve months following transplant surgery. Four days after surgery, came a terrifying rejection episode - and the high-tech medicine and guided visualization that turned it around. In the months that followed, Ruth and Ana coped with ongoing medical complications that crippled Ana and strained their relationship; they followed complex, phenomenally expensive treatment regimens, came face-to-face with the very real limits of Western medicine, and discovered simple remedies for some of the problems doctors could not solve.Anyone who has ever dealt with a major health problem - or cared for a sick partner - will identify with this portrait of a couple struggling to maintain emotional and sexual intimacy while confronting the myriad challenges of chronic illness and disability.

How do our patients come to be the way they are? What forces shape their conscious and unconscious thoughts and feelings? How can we use this information to best help them? Constructing psychodynamic formulations is one of the best ways for mental health professionals to answer questions like these. It can help clinicians in all mental health setting understand their patients, set treatment goals, choose therapeutic strategies, construct meaningful interventions and conduct treatment. Despite the centrality of psychodynamic formulation to our work with patients, few students are taught how to construct them in a clear systematic way. This book offers students and practitioners from all fields of mental health a clear, practical, operationalized method for constructing psychodynamic formulations, with an emphasis on the following steps: DESCRIBING problems and patternsREVIEWING the developmental historyLINKING problems and patterns to history using organizing ideas about development. The unique, up-to-date perspective of this book integrates psychodynamic theories with ideas about the role of genetics, trauma, and early cognitive and emotional difficulties on development to help clinicians develop effective formulations. Psychodynamic Formulation is written in the same clear, concise style of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: A Clinical Manual (Wiley 2011). It is reader friendly, full of useful examples, eminently practical, suitable for either classroom or individual use, and applicable for all mental health professionals. It can stand alone or be used as a companion volume to the Clinical Manual.

Our empire-based Modernity culture is failing, and humanity needs a new consciousness to get us through the crisis. The stories told by Indigenous peoples don't just demonstrate the fundamental differences between Earth-based cultures and our Modernity culture; listening deeply to them can help us understand the processes that caused us to create this mess-and choose the ethics on which we wish to build a sustainable way of life.
Folktales of England

Folktales of England

If wonder tales are not abundant in England, other kinds of folktales thrive: local traditions, historical legends, humorous anecdotes. Many of the favorite tales which English-speaking peoples carry with them from childhood come from a long tradition--stories as familiar to Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Spenser, and their many contemporaries as they are to us. This is a fine, homely feast, immediately intelligble. . . .--Times Educational Supplement . . . should be of special concern to Americans since many of the tales are parallel to or the source of our own folk stories.--Choice This is entertainment, to be sure, but is also part of man's attempts to comprehend his world.--Quartet Folktales of England is by all odds the most satisfactory general collection of folktales to come out of England since the advent of modern collection and classification techniques.--Ernest W. These volumes, the fourth and fifth, complete the series of biographical sketches of students at Princeton University (the College of New Jersey in colonial times). They cover pivotal years for both the nation and the College. In 1784, the war with England had just ended. Nassau Hall was still in a shambles following its bombardment, and the College was in financial distress. It gradually regained financial and academic strength, and the Class of 1794 graduated in the year of the death of President John Witherspoon, one of the most important early American educators. The introductory essay by John Murrin, editor of the series since 1981, explores the postwar context of the College. The two volumes contain biographies of 354 men who attended with the classes of 1784 through 1794 and two other students whose presence at the College in earlier years has only now been demonstrated. During these years Princeton accounted for about an eighth of all A.B. degrees granted in the United States. It was the young republic's most "national" college, although it had nearly lost its New England constituency and was instead beginning to draw nearly 40 percent of its students from the South. Originally published in 1991. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

"The Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired, or Otherwise Print Disabled" is a watershed development in the fields of intellectual property and human rights. As the first international legal instrument to establish mandatory exceptions to copyright, the Marrakesh Treaty uses the legal and policy tools of copyright to advance human rights. The World Blind Union Guide to the Marrakesh Treaty offers a comprehensive framework for interpreting the Treaty in ways that enhance the ability of print-disabled individuals to create, read, and share books and cultural materials in accessible formats. The Guide also provides specific recommendations to government officials, policymakers, and disability rights organizations involved with implementing the Treaty's provisions in national law.
