Chester Seth Husted was 24 years old when he was killed in action while fighting with the U.S. Marines in France, a little more than a month before World War ended. The son of Wallace and Emma Sutherland Husted, Chester was born in Rialto, California, on March 21, 1894. He spent his early childhood in Highland, California, and moved with his family first to San Fernando and then to Corona in about 1908. This account traces Chester's time in the Marines, from his enlistment to his death, based on letters he sent home and which his mother preserved, and on letters she and others wrote him but which he did not receive before his death and were returned. The letters here are reproduced verbatim, except for some editing for clarity purposes, and I hope will serve as a time capsule of World War I and life in Corona, California. About the autho: rJerry D. Boyd is a retired journalist and nephew of Chester Husted. He grew up hearing stories about "Uncle Chester" the war hero, and reading his letters.

"Yes mother, I'm awake," I replied to the soft knocking on my door. It had happened every morning of my life, so I knew who was there and that my day had been planned. "Five new novices have been accepted and are moving into the dorm. You can go down there and help with that, but don't stay in the room with them alone. Appearance of propriety is very important. Two instructors are taking them to the range to give them a rundown on the basics. Lia will be there in case of accidents, but you could give pointers, like your brother James. Watch their magic and see what they're doing right or wrong." "I'll be right there. I'm just cleaning up a few things in here." "Don't be too long or everything will be moved without your help." And that started another typical day for me.

Against Resistance of Lawful Powers. a Sermon Preach'd Before the King at White-Hall, November 5. 1661. by the Reverend Father in God, Seth Lord Bishop of Sarum.
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
