Scripting a Sermon

Scripting a Sermon

Scripting a Sermon approaches common challenges for crafting sermons looking toward the essential components of filmmaking to help preachers create more potent sermons. In this third volume in the "Preaching and…" series, Shauna K. Hannan and Gael Chandler combine their expertise to focus on the convergences between the crafts of homiletics and filmmaking. Looking to enliven the preached word, this book draws attention to the ways in which the sermon is set up to captivate the audience. For example, sermon openings, which are frequently disconnected from the sermon’s overall point or needlessly long, are explored through the techniques of filmmakers who use opening shots to introduce the narrative. Readers will be enlightened to how filmmakers use these openings to set the tone of the film, involve the audience in the characters’ story, and establish expectations for what the audience will encounter throughout the film. Hannan and Chandler give detailed and practical advice on specific aspects of this and other processes that preachers could use to craft far more effective sermons. Other chapters cover building scenes and characters, being a good editor of your work, and crafting effective sermon endings. Equipped with the wisdom of the best filmmakers, skilled preachers will gain greater insight into powerful methods for captivating hearers and impacting our world.

Jameon's Closet is a story written to help children acknowledge and respect their feelings...even the hard ones. It uses humor and everyday life to gently and non-threateningly expose children to the importance of appropriately expressing feelings. The clever use of the closet as a metaphor addresses a familiar and common experience many children have when confronted with overwhelming feelings. The authors invite children to engage in a process of cleaning as they go, little by little, which lends hope to an otherwise large goal. As children, and adults alike, embrace the important message of Jameon's Closet, we can expect maturity and well-being for all. Ceth Ashen, PhD Clinical Psychologist BOOK REVIEW https: //readersfavorite.com/book-review/jameons-closet Reviewed by Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite Jameon's Closet is an educational children's picture book written by Shauna Havlina and Leanne Richter. Jameon is not sure how he's going to clean out that closet in his bedroom. If it were an ordinary closet, he'd have no problem, but he's frightened of even opening the door to look inside. You see, he's been putting dirty socks and t-shirts, empty candy wrappers and anything else he didn't want to put or throw away inside that closet. Jameon's bedroom always looked so neat and tidy that his grandma would actually let him have extra time to play his games, but eventually she found out about the closet. All those stinky socks and t-shirts, combined with the fact that he had no clean socks left at all, made her suspicious. Now she wants that closet cleaned out. She's going to make it a bit easier for Jameon though. Grandma knows a guy named Jon, who is pretty good at figuring out how to clean closets. Jon's a counselor, and he showed Jameon how they could fix that closet just a little bit at a time -- and it worked Richter and Havlina are licensed marriage and family therapists who've worked with traumatized kids and their families for over ten years. Their story, Jameon's Closet, provides kids and their caregivers with a helpful metaphor for helping kids release long suppressed feelings and emotions in slow, supportive and contained processes. The story explains to kids how storing up their memories and feelings is similar to Jameon's awful closet. The illustrations provided are bright, funny and lively, and they work perfectly with the upbeat and positive message of the story. Jameon's Closet is most highly recommended.

Six months after her divorce, author and (hopefully not former) funny lady Sarah Lange has managed to put on something other than yoga pants and fly to a conference in Los Angeles, during which she is thrilled to feel her old self scratching the surface. But on the flight home, her thoughts are consumed mostly by wondering what her two teenage daughters, Ashley and Annabelle, have been up to in her absence, praying that the In N Out burger she hastily consumed before takeoff stays in her stomach, and wondering just how large the cold sore she's sprouted is going to get. However, her seatmate (who may or may not be an air marshal) has other ideas. His friendly overtures soon have Sarah cracking jokes and enjoying everything first class has to offer-until they land and she contemplates taking evasive action, or at the very least scheduling an emergency session with her therapist, because he's asked her out. Fortunately, Sarah keeps herself together long enough to accept Daniel's dinner offer, because soon she needs him-his kindness, his strength-for much more than just in-flight entertainment. She comes home to find her 17-year-old elder daughter, Ashley, spiraling out of control-almost out of the blue. Or was this happening all along and she didn't notice? In trouble with the police, Ashley forces Sarah and her ex-husband, Steven, to come together as they try to help her. But nothing works, and after an unauthorized party ends with a horrible mess and missing valuables (which Ashley seems too out of it to notice or care about), the family reaches a breaking point. Following anguishing weeks of research, Sarah and Steven have a team transport Ashley to a rehab facility in the mountains of Utah. There, away from everything she's known, Ashley must learn to work through what's really bothering her. And at home, those hurting in the wake of Hurricane Ashley have to find a way to heal. New relationships are forged, old ones find a new normal, and no one will ever be the same.
Language Assistance under the Voting Rights Act
Language Assistance under the Voting Rights Act provides an interesting and unique approach to the problem of translating minority language ballots and evaluating the causes and effects of differences in the translated ballot language. As a whole, this book demonstrates the strong relationship between accessibility, state policy, and the role this has on participation among minority language voters, particularly in the area of direct democracy. This offers insight into the complex relationship that has evolved into the current state of governance across the United States, as well as how covered jurisdictions interact with federally mandated language assistance. By looking at this relationship from a variety of standpoints—including historical and policy analysis, interviews, and statistical analysis—this book shows a new perspective of the translation process and the implications for minority voters and their efficacy.

Lucas Lessar's great-grandfather arrived in Pennsylvania with a handful of pear seeds and a pocketful of introductions with which to make his fortune - and one name on his lips. He has told this story every Christmas, as Lucas' sprawling family throws kutya up to the ceiling to see if it will stick and bring good luck, and share shots of homemade pear brandy from the enchanted tree outside. But this year is different. It is 1974: the year Lucas turns thirteen. The year his mother Mirjana disappears. The year Zoli from the plate-glass factory goes mad for love. There used to be mines all along the Pittsburg coal seam, but now there's only one left: King Mine, where Lucas' father Jimmy was blown up a few years back. These days Lucas lives with Slats, his feisty, sharp-tongued grandmother, watched over by his five immensely strong great-uncles. He visits great-grandfather too, with his intellectual goat Valentina and Russian house-devil Tot-to - and this strange world seem inexplicable to Lucas, although perhaps not as incomprehensible as where Mirjana might be. School is tough too, and as he slides from the front of the classroom to the back, Lucas can see the plate-glass cracking at the factory. And soon he starts to have a sense of something else cracking, something like burnt branches, broken fences, lost voices, something maybe only a miracle can fix. Set against the collapse of an industry that has sustained an immigrant community for generations, this is a beautiful, atmospheric yet startling tale of one family's long winter - and the promise of spring that might eventually emerge.

America's heartland, its Midwestern states, can lay claim not only to hot dish casseroles and amber fields of grain, but also to a hearty dessert tradition brought over with a rich immigrant heritage. German, Scandinavian, Polish, French, and Italian families baked their way to the American Midwest, instilling in it pies, breads, cookies and pastries that manage to feel distinctly American. Author Shauna Sever began her culinary career in sunny Los Angeles before leaving her flip-flops behind, and resettling her family in her home state of Illinois. As she stretched her wings in her new Midwestern kitchen, she developed what she calls the 5 tenets of Midwest baking: Bake Big, Bake Easy, Bake with Purpose, Bake from the Past, Bake in the Present. Artisan profiles and interviews round out 100 recipes: Rhubarb Swedish Flop, Streuselkuchen, Secret-Ingredient Cherry Slab Pie, Apple Dapple Cake, Scotch-a-Roos and more, custom-designed to make any kitchen feel like a Midwestern home.

The UN Refugee Agency considers resettlement – the selection and transfer of refugees from the state where they seek asylum to another state that volunteers to take them – a tool of refugee protection and an expression of international burden sharing. In this account of Canada's resettlement program from the Indochinese crisis of the 1970s to the Syrian crisis of the 2010s, Shauna Labman explores how rights, responsibilities, and obligations intersect in the absence of a legal scheme for refugee resettlement. In particular, she examines the role of the law on the voluntary act of resettlement and the effect of resettlement on asylum policies. This pathbreaking book looks at the interplay between resettlement and asylum in one of the world's most successful refugee protection programs and shows how resettlement can either complement or complicate in-country asylum claims at a time when refugee crises and fear of outsiders are causing countries to close their borders to asylum-seekers around the world.

Translating Jesus – How to Share Your Faith in Language Today`s Culture Can Understand
How to Engage Culture with the Good News of ChristWe in the church do not speak the same language as the culture. We use many of the same words, but they rarely mean the same thing. And speaking louder isn't the answer. If we are to faithfully and effectively share the Good News, we have to translate Jesus.Embracing and unpacking the bilingual nature of spreading the gospel, pastor and teacher Shauna Pilgreen shows you how to learn the language of the culture so that you can clearly communicate the love of God in the three places Christ and culture meet: the gate, the cross, and the table. By learning how to share your story in the language of the culture, you'll not only find spiritual conversations more fruitful but also build a supportive and loving community of bilingual believers excited about inviting others to enter the kingdom of God.

Revealing the careers and backstage lives of child performers and their place in antebellum AmericaFrom 1855 until 1863, the Marsh Troupe of Juvenile Comedians, a professional acting company of approximately thirty children, entertained audiences with their nuanced performances of adult roles on stages around the globe. In Childhood and NineteenthCentury American Theatre: The Work of the Marsh Troupe of Juvenile Actors, author Shauna Vey provides an insightful account not only of this unique antebellum stage troupe but also of contemporary theatre practices and the larger American culture, including shifts in the definition of childhood itself. Both a microhistory of a professional theatre company and its juvenile players in the decade before the Civil War and a larger narrative of cultural change in the United States, Childhood and NineteenthCentury American Theatre sheds light on how childhood was idealized both on and off the stage, how the role of the child in society shifted in the nineteenth century, and the ways economic value and sentiment contributed to how children were viewed.

The speaker in Cape Verdean Blues is an oracle walking down the street. Shauna Barbosa interrogates encounters and the weight of their space. Grounded in bodily experience and the phenomenology of femininity, this collection provides a sense of Cape Verdean identity. It uniquely captures the essence of “Sodade,” as it refers to the Cape Verdean American experience, and also the nostalgia and self-reflection one navigates through relationships lived, lost, and imagined. And its layers of unusual imagery and sound hold the reader in their grip.
