Based on the National Communication Association’s conceptual model for teaching and evaluating undergraduate public speeches (as developed by the author and others), Sherwyn P. Morreale offers a highly accessible, easy-to-teach, easy-to-learn approach to public speaking. The approach adopted in the text includes eight public speaking competencies – four on speech preparation and four on speech delivery – which are enhanced by emphasizing the impact of technology, ethics, culture, and diversity on public speaking. A number of unique features designed to improve teaching and learning include: – Students used as examples in each chapter so that readers can follow them as they learn about public speaking; – Tables and boxed text to reinforce the most important learning points; – Checkpoint and self-assessment tools so that readers can determine their level of competence and find out whether they are ready to proceed to the next chapter; – Competence-building activities for students to apply chapter concepts and practice public speaking strategies in the classroom or as take-home assignments; – An accompanying website which is updated on a regular basis and offers a forum for students to contact the author. Designed for introductory-level public speaking courses taught at two- and four-year colleges and universities, this text offers a distinctively practical alternative for students and teachers to achieve consistency across multiple sections of the public speaking course. An instructor’s manual is available on request.

Now in its third edition, Communication: Motivation, Knowledge, Skills (previously Human Communication: Motivation, Knowledge, and Skills) is a textbook for the basic (hybrid) communication course at 2- and 4-year colleges and universities. Beginning with the premise that all forms of communication can be important, this text helps students develop a framework for choosing communication messages and behaviors that will allow them to communicate competently in any situation. Through a theoretically-based and skills-oriented approach, the text emphasizes the basic themes of motivation, knowledge, and skills across the contexts of interpersonal communication, small group communication, public speaking, and computer-mediated communication and mass communication. Building on the success of the first two editions, this third edition is unique in that it: – Features the collaborative work of three recognized experts in the communication discipline, each of whom is a specialist in one of the three areas covered in the hybrid iteration of the basic communication course: Interpersonal communication, Brian H. Spitzberg; Small group communication, J. Kevin Barge; Public speaking, Sherwyn P. Morreale. – Offers a unified approach to the basic processes of human communication based on a communication competence model pioneered by Brian H. Spitzberg. – Includes extensive coverage of mediated competence and mass communication. In addition to theoretically based but accessible content, all chapters have features designed to enhance teaching and learning. These include the story of a student experience that opens each chapter and is discussed and used to illustrate the chapter’s content; tables and boxes related to important topics presented to intrigue student readers and «lock in learning»; self-assessment tools students can use to evaluate their own motivation, knowledge, and skills related to real-world situations; and knowledge-building discussion questions and competence activities for home assignments or in-class groups at the conclusion of each chapter. A new Test Bank to accompany the third edition is available to instructors as a free PDF. Please email [email protected] to obtain a copy of this highly valid and reliable assessment resource. In addition, the lead author, Sherwyn Morreale, is happy to participate in a Q&A session with students via a video call every semester that the book is used. To arrange this, please email the author directly at [email protected]

Unsettling Research investigates what can be learned from the journey of an insider activist researcher seeking social transformations around issues of gender in an isolated rural Australian community. Unique and risky in its undertaking, the research evolves to create a new discourse in qualitative research. A seamless bricolage of autobiography/ethnography, narrative, feminist theory, critical theory, media literacy, critical pedagogy, and social theory, this work takes qualitative research to the next level. It enacts the notion of social justice, while creating a new lens through which to view action via research … research via action. The author allows the personal to establish positionality, and then works from within her position to create a meta-perspective on dialogue, action, and community manifestations of power. The analytic component of the research couples an ongoing process of coming-to-know with a need to address a community issue. By developing a conceptual framework and a process for disclosing and dislocating ideological hegemony and its associated power imbalances, the research adds to knowledge in the fields of gender and education, social justice, and nascent activist pedagogies. Whilst the particulars are located in Australia, the book creates a global lens for qualitative activist research.

The spiritual transformation lessons described in "The Gift of Spiritual Wisdom" lead the reader to a deeper understanding through shared experiences of Truth based in reality. The story invites readers to follow along with the aspects of Qi-flows: The application of certain beneficial rearrangements of energy (essence, vitality, spirit), as cultivated through Inner Alchemy practice and structured to mirror the properties associated with the four cardinal directions and a center. The Immortal Bridge: The various directions (this roadmap) hold complex links to natural colors seasons, body organs with associated qualities, shapes, cosmology, and flow changes of human perception included in many traditional indigenous beliefs. These five movements are also used as the foundation for the Wu Xing on which the immortal bridge forms by successfully merging health (physical-energy-spirit integration) with Tao (finding heaven within). The dynamic states of change are categorized according to the heavenly virtues of Faith, Hope, Compassion, Trust, and Where There is Light, and then associated with the central concept of Spiritual Wisdom. The chapters under each virtue are devoted to the exploration and expansion of specific Truth principles and practices, where it is necessary to gain mastery through generation, creation and overcoming of obstacles, in order to live a disciplined life by choice. Spiritual Wholeness: The author suggests daily living that is interactive and relational between phenomena, including seemingly disparate esoteric and well-known disciplines often felt to be a contest of the soul. In reality, the reader will discover that life's task is Spiritual Wholeness each individual at a center of a circle of love and light, as heaven's gift is successfully drawn within for personal benefit. As high Self blossoms and the clouds move away; the reader sees the priceless and perennial universal gift is mature Spiritual Wisdom sourced from the central position, it is harmonious and balanced, and its application understands the nature of interdependent origination (paratantra) of the world. (Note: Paratantra means everything bases on other things to help it to manifest): "Look at a rose. At first thought a rose is only a rose. Look deeper: See that a rose can only be made up of non-rose elements, like earth, water, air, sunshine, fertilizer. The rose has to base itself on sunshine, the fertilizer, the hard work of the gardener, and many things, for it to manifest."So, in the end result, the manifestation of one is based on the presence of all others: High Self radiates outward for the benefit of humanity. This circle becomes the reality of "Oneness of All" and, in Truth, we are found to be healed and holy within its freedom. When Form Reflects Eternity: There is a spiritual wisdom that comes with the gift of maturity and maturity grows only with sincere practice. This dynamic is best described in a teaching from an ancient sacred text: "The secret to finding health, happiness, and peace is the simple acceptance of your true Self, and then moving on to focusing on others. This shift in focus places us in the flow of energy that is life itself. It is a privilege to be of service to others, without an expectation of a return, simply doing for the privilege of the action itself.""When you can feel compassion for a falling leaf, or a duckling crossing the road and hope for its safe travel, these sensitive qualities are of the greatest importance. These are the qualities more important than any knowledge you will gain through study it's just information." Truth emerges when form reflects eternity in a radiant beauty emanating directly from the soul. There is this beauty in every person because what is unchanging in the Universe is reflected there, as each individual creatively paints the spectacular masterpiece of a soul's story established on the lessons learned from one another.

Beloved by young girls around the world, Hasbro's My Little Pony franchise has been mired in controversy since its debut in the early 1980s. Critics dismissed the cartoons as toy advertisements, and derided their embrace of femininity. The 2010 debut of the openly feminist My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic renewed the backlash, as its broad appeal challenged entrenched notions about gendered entertainment. This first comprehensive study of My Little Pony explores the history and cultural significance of the franchise through Season 5 of Friendship Is Magic and the first three Equestria Girls films. The brand has continued to be on the receiving end of a sexist double standard regarding commercialism in children's entertainment, while masculine cartoons such as the Transformers have been spared similar criticism.

The story of Star Trek's resurrection between the 1969 cancellation of the original series and the 1979 release of Robert Wise's Star Trek--The Motion Picture, has become legend and like so many other legends, it tends to get printed instead of the facts. Drawing on hundreds of contemporary news articles and primary sources not seen in decades, this book tells the true story of the first successful Star Trek revival. After several attempts to relaunch the franchise, ST--TMP was released on a wave of prestige promotion, hype, and public frenzy unheard of for a film based on a television show. Controversy surrounded its troubled production and $44M budget, earning it a reputation at the time as the most expensive movie ever made. After a black-tie premiere in Washington, D.C., its opening in 856 North American theaters broke multiple box-office records--a harbinger of the modern blockbuster era. Despite immediate financial success, the film was panned by both critics and the public, leaving this enterprise nowhere to boldly go but down.

In 1965, 18-year-old Persis Khambatta became the third woman to be crowned Miss India. After moving to England and then to the United States, she found worldwide fame in the first Star Trek movie in 1979, and in 1980 she became the first Indian presenter at the Academy Awards. The American film industry seemed never to forgive Khambatta for being a non-white woman who refused to do nude scenes. After failing to sustain a career as either a producer or a performer, she achieved a triumph before her sudden death in 1998 with the publication of her book Pride of India: A Tribute to Miss India. Based on contemporary news articles and primary sources, this first biography examines Khambatta's Hindi and English-language film and television work, and demonstrates the many ways she was ahead of her time as a filmmaker, feminist, and humanitarian.

A Generation X transgender woman, Sherilyn Connelly came out of the closet in 1999. Her own identity still emerging, she had stumbled into a difficult, stifling relationship. Also, her employment at a tech company ceased when the dot-com bubble burst. It was a goth boy from Bolinas that first took her shopping for make-up, and the San Francisco goth scene became her respite. This wickedly eye-opening memoir reveals how Connelly dealt with a toxic partner and found her voice as a woman. A longtime cinephile, it tells how she became a writer, rekindled a love for cult films and horror conventions, and learned "the secret to becoming a star." Her remembrances are also a tale of a bygone era of sex, music and San Francisco and its darkened underworld of goth strays--her literate vampires and beautiful ghosts.
