Es una novela hist rica acerca de la presencia de los exploradores vikingos en tierras de Am rica, aproximadamente en el a o 1000 d/C., o sea unos quinientos a os antes de la llegada del genov s Crist bal Col n. La novela se desarrolla en dos mbitos a saber: Por un lado, la mencionada historia de los vikingos en aquellos lejanos tiempos, y por otro lado, el relato de la poca actual, acerca de las situaciones de vida de los investigadores de la historia, sus amores, sus viajes, los alcances del estudio y las vicisitudes que deben afrontar, en el aspecto rom ntico. La historia investigada, se basa en la exploraci n por parte de Leif Eiricksson y sus familiares, a tierras de Canad , (Isla de Baffin, Pen nsula de Labrador e isla de Terranova), y posteriormente su presencia en el hoy llamado estado de Minnesota, y los alrededores del rio Mississippi en Estados Unidos, a partir del a o 1003 d/C. Sin embargo, comienza con la presencia de los ancestrales guerreros vikingos, varios siglos antes, aproximadamente en el a o 787 d/C., y posteriores, cuando atacaban los monasterios y poblados en los diferentes reinos de la Britania, (Gran Breta a), comenzando por un preliminar ataque a la Isla de Vindili, (hoy isla de Portland en el Canal de la Mancha), y luego con la famosa arremetida y asesinato de los indefensos monjes cristianos, en el monasterio de Lindisfarne, en el reino de Northumbr a, y los posteriores asaltos a la abad a de Jarrow y al monasterio consagrado a San Columba, en la isla de Iona, que pertenece al grupo de las lejanas Islas H bridas, esta ltima en la regi n de Alba, que es el nombre en ga lico de la hoy denominada Escocia. Posteriormente se relatan los hechos acaecidos con el descubrimiento de Islandia, la presencia de la familia de Eirick el Rojo en Groenlandia y el inesperado y accidentado viaje de Bjarni Herjolfsson, a tierras desconocidas, muy al oeste y que posteriormente ser an identificadas como las tierras de Vinland; (1. Helluland, 2. Markland y 3. Vinland), y sigue con las narraciones acerca de la presencia de los exploradores en Am rica. La historia actual es sobre las vidas de Bruce Merino, un hombre de negocios, aficionado a la historia y Tinna Olaf rd ttir, una investigadora que realiza un estudio para la Universidad de Islandia, acerca de las Sagas Islandesas, Groenlandesas y de Eirick el Rojo. Comienza con el intempestivo y doloroso deceso de la esposa de Bruce, y la enorme tristeza que esto acarrea en su vida. Luego, varios meses despu s, conoce a Tinna en un ambiente de negocios relacionado con una consultor a que Bruce est realizando para un banco americano y la empresa islandesa del padre de Tinna. Las dificultades se presentan en la incipiente y tensa relaci n rom ntica entre Bruce y Tinna, afectada por el recuerdo de la fallecida esposa de Bruce.

Concerning the microstructures, the sol-gel method applies to porous materials, dense materials like glasses and ceramics, organic-inorganic hybrids and nanocomposites. Sol-Gel Techniques for Glass Producers and Users provides technological information, descriptions and characterizations of prototypes, or products already on the market, and illustrates advantages and disadvantages of the sol-gel process in comparison to other methods. The first chapter entitled "Wet Chemical Technology" gives a summary of the basic principles of the sol-gel chemistry. The most promising applications are related to coatings. Chapter 2 describes the various "Wet Chemical Coating Technologies" from glass cleaning to many deposition and post-coating treatment techniques. These include patterning of coatings through direct or indirect techniques which have became very important and for which the sol-gel processing is particularly well adapted. Chapter 3 entitled "Bulk Glass Technologies" reports on the preparation of special glasses for different applications. Chapter 4 entitled "Coatings and Materials Properties" describes the properties of the different coatings and the sol-gel materials, fibers and powders. The chapter also includes a section dedicated to the characterization techniques especially applied to sol-gel coatings and products.

Sol Plaatje is celebrated as one of South Africa's most accomplished political and literary figures. A pioneer in the history of the black press, editor of several newspapers, he was one of the founders of the African National Congress in 1912, led its campaign against the notorious Natives Land Act of 1913, and twice travelled overseas to represent the interests of his people. He wrote a number of books, including - in English - Native Life in South Africa (1916), a powerful denunciation of the Land Act and the policies that led to it, and a pioneering novel, Mhudi (1930). Years after his death his diary of the siege of Mafeking was retrieved and published, providing a unique view of one of the best known episodes of the South African War of 1899-1902. At the same time Plaatje was a proud Morolong, fascinated by his people's history. He was dedicated to Setswana, and set out to preserve its traditions and oral forms so as to create a written literature. He translated a number of Shakespeare's plays into Setswana, the first in any African language, collected proverbs and stories, and even worked on a new dictionary. He fought long battles with those who thought they knew better over the particular form its orthography should take. This book tells the story of Plaatje's remarkable life, setting it in the context of the changes that overtook South Africa during his lifetime, and the huge obstacles he had to overcome. It draws upon extensive new research in archives in southern Africa, Europe and the US, as well as an expanding scholarship on Plaatje and his writings. This biography sheds new light not only on Plaatje's struggles and achievements but upon his personal life and his relationships with his wife and family, friends and supporters. It pays special attention to his formative years, looking to his roots in chiefly societies, his education and upbringing on a German-run mission, and his exposure to the legal and political ideas of the nineteenth-century Cape Colony as key factors in inspiring and sustaining a life of more or less ceaseless endeavour.

During my professional career, I developed a strong interest in sol-gel technology, and worked on both xerogel and aerogel systems. My fascination with aerogels has driven me to explore their commercial potential, which is currently an important component of my company's business plan. Together with my co-workers, I have also worked on the preparation of controlled PZT and silica xerogels as well as thin film coatings of metals by the sol-gel technology, These experiences convinced me of the tremendous potentials of this technology. A conviction that is shared by many scientists, engineers, and business leaders around the globe. Many sol-gel derived products are already articles of commerce. However, to expand the commercial potential of sol-gel technology, two challenges must be met: (1) the quality of sol-gel derived products must continue to meet or exceed the quality of competing products, (2) the production cost of sol-gel products (specially aerogels) must continued to decline. A key to lowering the costs of sol-gel products is finding inexpensive precursors.
