An update of one of the most trusted books on constructing and analyzing actuarial models for the C/4 actuarial exam This new, abridged edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to include the essential material related to Exam C of the Society of Actuaries' and Casualty Actuarial Society's accreditation programs. The book maintains an approach to modeling and forecasting that utilizes tools related to risk theory, loss distributions, and survival models. Random variables, basic distributional quantities, the recursive method, and techniques for classifying and creating distributions are also discussed. Both parametric and non-parametric estimation methods are thoroughly covered along with advice for choosing an appropriate model. The book continues to distinguish itself by providing over 400 exercises that have appeared on previous examinations. The emphasis throughout is now placed on calculations and spreadsheet implementation.Additional features of the Fourth Edition include: extended discussions of risk management and risk measures, including Tail-Value-at-Risk; expanded coverage of copula models and their estimation; new sections on extreme value distributions and their estimations, compound frequency class of distributions, and estimation for the compound class; and motivating examples from fields of insurance and business. All data sets are available on an FTP site. An assortment of supplements (both print and electronic) is available. Loss Models, Fourth Edition is an essential resource for students and aspiring actuaries who are preparing to take the SOA and CAS preliminary examinations C/4. Optical Control of Molecular Dynamics

Optical Control of Molecular Dynamics

Stuart A. Rice; Meishan Zhao

sidottu
Advances in laser technology over the last 10-15 years have stimulated study of the active control of quantum molecular dynamics. Lasers may used to generate external fields of varying intensity, phases, and spectral content, which then are used to alter the molecular dynamics of a system so as to generate more of a particular product. Control of reactions at this microscopic level is one of the hot areas of research in chemical physics. This book describes the current status of the theory of optical control of molecular dynamics

The Politics of Rights

The Politics of Rights

Stuart A. Scheingold's landmark work introduced a new understanding of the contribution of rights to progressive social movements, and thirty years later it still stands as a pioneering and provocative work, bridging political science and sociolegal studies. In the preface to this new edition, the author provides a cogent analysis of the burgeoning scholarship that has been built on the foundations laid in his original volume. A new foreword from Malcolm Feeley of Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law traces the intellectual roots of The Politics of Rights to the classic texts of social theory and sociolegal studies."Scheingold presents a clear, thoughtful discussion of the ways in which rights can both empower and constrain those seeking change in American society. While much of the writing on rights is abstract and obscure, The Politics of Rights stands out as an accessible and engaging discussion." -Gerald N. Rosenberg, University of Chicago"This book has already exerted an enormous influence on two generations of scholars. It has had an enormous influence on political scientists, sociologists, and anthropologists, as well as historians and legal scholars. With this new edition, this influence is likely to continue for still more generations. The Politics of Rights has, I believe, become an American classic."-Malcolm Feeley, Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California, Berkeley, from the forewordStuart A. Scheingold is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Washington.
The Three Crowns

The Three Crowns

Stuart A. Cohen

Cambridge University Press
2007
pokkari
The Jewish national revival of our times has stimulated scholarly interest in the historical origins and manifestations of Jewry's distinctive traditions of constitutional thought and political action. This study is a contribution to that enquiry. Focusing on the structures of communal rule forged during the first five centuries of the common era, the book presents an analysis of the processes whereby the rabbis and their disciples replaced both priests and civic rulers as foci of political royalty and instruments of domestic government throughout the Jewish world. Cohen argues that much of Jewish political history during the age of the Mishnah and Talmud can be read as a record of the attempt to reinterpret the ancient concept of the three crowns (or clusters of rulership which determined Jewish public behaviour) and adapt it to rabbinic purposes.

Focusing on the structures of communal rule forged during the first five centuries of the common era, the book presents a novel analysis of the processes whereby the rabbis and their disciples replaced both priests and civic rulers as foci of political royalty and instruments of domestic government throughout the Jewish world. Cohen argues that much of Jewish political history during the age of the Mishnah and Talmud can be read as a record of the attempt to re-interpret the ancient concept of the three crowns (or clusters of rulership which determined Jewish public behaviour) and adapt it to rabbinic purposes. Drawing on recent scholarship in Hebrew as well as in English, this is the first book to advance a sustained and overtly political analysis of these developments, as opposed to simply a religious one, and its author illuminates throughout the conceptual dimensions which have influenced Jewish institutional practice for much of the past two millenia.
Patriots, Politics, and the Oklahoma City Bombing

Patriots, Politics, and the Oklahoma City Bombing

Stuart A. Wright

Cambridge University Press
2007
pokkari
This book explores social movements by analyzing an escalating spiral of tension between the Patriot movement and the state centered on the mutual framing of conflict as 'warfare'. By examining the social construction of 'warfare' as a principal script or frame defining the movement-state dynamic, Stuart A. Wright explains how this highly charged confluence of a war narrative engendered a kind of symbiosis leading to the escalation of a mutual threat that culminated in the Oklahoma City bombing. Wright offers a unique perspective on the events leading up to the bombing because he served as a consultant to Timothy McVeigh's defense team for eighteen months and draws on primary data based on face-to-face interviews with McVeigh. The book contends that McVeigh was firmly entrenched in the Patriot movement and was part of a network of 'warrior cells' that planned and implemented the bombing.

Stuart A. Bremer

Princeton University Press

This book evaluates the Simulated International Processer (SIPER) model of the international political system, which was derived from the Inter-Nation Simulation model created at Northwestern University. Stuart Bremer makes a significant advance by programming all aspects of the basic theory so that it more completely and accurately reflects the complexity of international relations in the real world. After describing the SIPER model, the author sets forth the values of the variables and parameters used for the twenty-four runs, including those that remained the same throughout and those that were varied. He then undertakes to validate the model by determining the extent to which the simulated nations behave like real world nations and simulated international systems like real international systems. In conclusion, he assesses the model's strengths and weaknesses and points to possible future improvements. Originally published in 1977. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

"The fifteen case studies in this book place the reader in a wide variety of real public health leadership situations. . . . Each situation is presented to the student with the swirl of communications, conflicts, and conundrums that I have found accompany any difficult public health leadership judgment. The case writers have done a very good job of placing the student in public health decisional situations that, to me, feel like the reality of my own professional life." —William L. Roper, MD, MPH, Dean, School of Public Health The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, from the Foreword The six chapters and fifteen cases contained in this book challenge students to ask the appropriate questions and stimulate their thinking about public health leadership and management. The chapters provide the student with: a framework and tools for case analysis, and the important environmental context of the health care system in general and public health systems specifically. The 15 public health case studies: are all based on actual situations faced by real public health leaders encompass all of the core disciplines in public health are geographically diverse, and include international content, and provide substantial detail that immerses the student in meaningful decisional simulations. The situations presented by each case are vivid and provide not only a basis for practicing professional public health judgments but also provide a lasting impression that aids in retention of the lessons learned.
