Tell Me a Story

Elaine Reese

Contemporary research shows that parents who tell and read stories in a rich and responsive way have children with advanced language, memory, and emotional development. Many parents and educators have relied on reading books out loud to children as a way to strengthen their literacy skills, but what they may not know is that family storytelling may be just as important for children's development as reading books. In Tell Me a Story Dr. Elaine Reese explains how storytelling is valuable for children's language, emotional development, coping, self-concept, and sense of belonging. Based on solid research evidence collected over the last two decades, this book shows parents how to maximize these benefits with storytelling techniques that work with children of all ages, from toddlers to teens, and all kinds of children, including children with ADHD, difficult temperaments, and language delays. Reese identifies the most effective ways for strengthening children's language, cognitive, and coping skills and addresses the following questions: How can parents tell stories that matter to children and adolescents? How is storytelling with daughters different than storytelling with sons? How can parents and grandparents share stories that teenagers will want to hear? Why is it a good idea to tell children stories in addition to reading them stories from a book? Parents and grandparents will enjoy Reese's narrative excerpts and storytelling tips and be eager to apply their newfound skills to promote their children's and grandchildren's development and enhance their time together.

In this tender, impassioned fourth novel, James Baldwin created one of his most striking characters: a man struggling to become himself.'Everyone wishes to be loved, but in the event, nearly no one can bear it'At the height of his theatrical career, the actor Leo Proudhammer is nearly felled by a heart attack. As he hovers between life and death, we see the choices that have made him enviably famous and terrifyingly vulnerable. For between Leo's childhood on the streets of Harlem and his arrival into the world of the theatre lies a wilderness of desire and loss, shame and rage. And everywhere there is the anguish of being black in a society that seems poised on the brink of racial war. In this tender, angry 1968 novel, James Baldwin created one of his most striking characters: a man struggling to become himself.'The emotion surrounding family attachment... is deeply felt and is one reasons he continues to be read with such intensity' Colm Tóibín

Folio 46r from Codex Telleriano-Remensis was created in the sixteenth century under the supervision of Spanish missionaries in central Mexico. As an artifact of seismic cultural and political shifts, the manuscript painting is a singular document of indigenous response to Spanish conquest. Examining the ways in which the folio's tlacuilo (indigenous painter/writer) creates a pictorial vocabulary, this book embraces the place "outside" history from which this rich document emerged.Applying contemporary intellectual perspectives, including aspects of gender, modernity, nation, and visual representation itself, JosÉ Rabasa reveals new perspectives on colonial order. Folio 46r becomes a metaphor for reading the totality of the codex and for reflecting on the postcolonial theoretical issues now brought to bear on the past. Ambitious and innovative (such as the invention of the concepts of elsewheres and ethnosuicide, and the emphasis on intuition), Tell Me the Story of How I Conquered You embraces the performative force of the native scribe while acknowledging the ineffable traits of 46r-traits that remain untenably foreign to the modern excavator/scholar. Posing provocative questions about the unspoken dialogues between evangelizing friars and their spiritual conquests, this book offers a theoretic-political experiment on the possibility of learning from the tlacuilo ways of seeing the world that dislocate the predominance of the West.

Texas, the 1930s-the years of the Great Depression. It was the Texas of great men: Dobie, Bedichek, Webb, the young AmÉrico Paredes. And it was the Texas of May McCord and "Cocky" Thompson, the Reverend I. B. Loud, the Cajun Marcelle Comeaux, the black man they called "Grey Ghost," and all the other extraordinary "ordinary" people whom William A. Owens met in his travels."Up and down and sideways" across Texas, Owens traveled. His goal: to learn for himself what the diverse peoples of the state "believed in, yearned for, laughed at, fought over, as revealed in story and song." Tell me a story, sing me a song brings together both the songs he gathered-many accompanied by music-and Owens' warm reminiscences of his travels in the Texas of the Thirties and early Forties.

A unique combination of musical analysis and cultural history, Tell Me Why stands alone among Beatles books with its single-minded focus on the most important aspect of the band: its music. Riley offers a new, deeper understanding of the Beatles by closely considering each song and album they recorded in an exploration as rigorous as it is soulful. He tirelessly sifts through the Beatles discography, making clear that the legendary four were more than mere teen idols: They were brilliant innovators who mastered an extremely detailed art. Since the first publication of Tell Me Why in 1988, much new primary source material has appeared,Paul McCartney's authorized biography, the Anthology CDs and videos, the complete Parlophone-sequenced albums on CD, the Live at the BBC sessions, and the global smash 1 . Riley incorporates all the new material in an update that makes this a crucial book for Beatles fans.

Aaron Neville

NAMED A BEST BOOK OF 2023 BY BEST CLASSIC BANDS For the first time, legendary singer and songwriter and Grammy Hall-of-Famer Aaron Neville tells his personal story of overcoming poverty, racism, addiction, and loss through faith, family, and music. Aaron Neville's first #1 hit, "Tell It Like it Is," was released in 1966. In the mid-70s he formed the Neville Brothers with Art, Charles, and Cyril--now known as the "First Family of New Orleans"--and they released more than a dozen influential albums. Given his one-of-a-kind, soaring falsetto, Aaron was the breakout star, and over the next six decades, he had four platinum albums, three #1 songs, numerous film and television appearances, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2014. His triple-platinum duets with Linda Ronstadt (including the Grammy-Award-winning hit "I Don't Know Much") showcased the softer side of his voice, and the smoking hot funky soul of the Neville Brothers cemented his legacy as an R&B legend. But few people know the challenging and circuitous road Aaron took to fame. Born in a housing project in New Orleans of Black and Native American heritage, Aaron struggled as a teenage father working to raise a family while building his career as a musician, surviving a stint in jail for car theft and many years battling heroin addiction. Recognized by the dagger tattoo on his cheek and his St. Jude medallion earring, Neville credits St. Jude--the patron saint of lost cases--for turning his life around. He found healing and salvation in music. Aaron Neville is a man who by all accounts should not have made it. Tell It Like It Is shares his story for the first time.
