Tony Garnett is the first book-length study of one of the most respected and prolific producers working in British television. From ground-breaking dramas from the 1960s such as Up the Junction and Cathy Come Home to the 'must see' series in the 1990s and 2000s such as This Life and The Cops, Garnett has produced some of the most important and influential British television drama. This book charts Garnett's career from his early days as an actor to his position as executive producer and head of World Productions. Drawing on personal interviews, archival research, contextual analysis and selected case studies, Tony Garnett examines the ways in which Garnett has helped to define the role of the producer in British television drama. Arguing that Garnett was both a key creative and political influence on the work he produced and an enabler of the work of others, the book traces his often combative relationships with broadcasting institutions (especially the BBC). Additionally, the study discusses the films he made for the cinema and considers some of the ways in which Garnett's experiments in film technology ? 16 mm in the 1960s, digital video in the 1990s ? have shaped his creative output.Tony Garnett will be of interest to all levels of researchers and students of British television drama, media and film.

Tony Richardson was a key figure in British cinema of the 1950s and 1960s. Having established himself in the theatre with the first production of John Osborne’s landmark play Look Back in Anger, he became a central director in the New Wave, bringing greater realism to British cinema. He went on to make some of the most significant films of the 1960s including the multi Oscar-winning Tom Jones. This detailed and authoritative account of Richardson’s career provides a reassessment of his achievements. As well as looking at his best known films, it considers neglected works such as Ned Kelly and Joseph Andrews, illustrating how Richardson remained a champion of the socially marginalised. In mapping out his life and work, from the English Stage Company to his final films in America, Shail re-establishes Richardson’s at the front rank of British film directors, confirming his contribution to a period of dynamic change in British culture.

Tony Hunt's Sketchbook illustrates the connection between brain and hand in conceiving structural concepts and details as possible solutions to structures in architecture. This new edition features 100 previously unpublished sketches. These sketches illustrate alternative structural concepts, ideas and details developed by Tony Hunt for over one hundred projects throughout his professional life. They relate directly to projects built and unbuilt in the field of structural engineering and were either produced at the time of relevant design meetings or as a response to a problem posed by an architect and are, therefore, a record of ideas proposed at the particular time. They are a source of design inspiration and an insight into the work of this well respected engineer.

Tony Ford has been in football since 1974 and was awarded an MBE in 2001 for his services to sport. He has starred for several Football League clubs, and he holds the appearance record for any player in the history of British football. Tony's story is one of struggle. He is a black footballer who during the 1970s, '80s and '90s plied his trade at Sunderland, Bradford City, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion, Scunthorpe Utd, Mansfield, Grimsby and Rochdale. In those politically incorrect days he suffered the usual abuse any ethnic minority footballer would suffer not just from opposing players and fans, but from within the clubs he played for. However, he rose above it, maintained his discipline, and today is the most promising manager outside of the Premiership. His story will show a man who was determined to succeed, both on and off the pitch, and with the help of his family is one of the north's most respected footballers. This will be an official biography that will be have a lot of involvement from the subject. It will include many fascinating anecdotes from the dressing room (and after playing in 1,100 League games, Tony Ford has quite a few of them!), detailed career statistics and many photograph's. Endorsements will come from Brian Clough, Lou Macari, Emlyn Hughes, Paul Gascoigne, David Platt and Alex Ferguson.

In his own words, Tony takes you through his life from winning and losing at Wembley to the highs and lows with the GB national team, his clubs and players. Tony has coached Belfast, Dundee Stars (whom he took to a league and play-off double) and Edinburgh and is now with Manchester Phoenix. Find out why he didn't take up Edmonton's offer to stay in the NHL, what really happens on a European tour and why he was banned for taking a cold remedy. Savvy, witty and often controversial, Tony pulls no punches in describing his time in ice hockey and outlining how the sport should move forward.

Baseball player Tony Lazzeri was the first great Italian-American sports superstar. He was known for his excellent glove, strong throwing arm and good speed, as well as his honesty, integrity and support of his teammates. This member of the 1927 Murderers' Row of the New York Yankees batted sixth behind Earl Combs, Mark Koenig, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Bob Meusel. The major league's first power-hitting second baseman, he batted over .300 five times and drove in over 100 runs in seven seasons. He was the Yankees regular second baseman for twelve consecutive seasons and helped them win six pennants and five world championships. Chosen to play in the first All-Star Game in 1933, he made the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991. Researched from primary sources as well as interviews with his peers, this biography covers Lazzeri's life from his birth in San Francisco to Italian immigrants; his harsh, poverty-stricken childhood, and struggles with epilepsy (though he never suffered an attack while playing baseball); through every moment of his impressive career (as well as the time he struck out against Grover Cleveland Alexander in Game Seven of the 1926 World Series); ending with his death at age 42 of a heart attack. Lazzeri's batting record is included as an appendix and the work is illustrated with both private and public photographs.

Playwright Tony Kushner is a voice of intellectualism, neo-socialism, gay activism and political outrage in an era when the political pendulum has swayed to the right. Through scalding humor, thought, and compassion, he explores political dynamics and the human condition in the modern era, shedding light on and giving hope for the direst of circumstances. His best known work, Angels in America, delves beneath the anti-gay rhetoric and political superficiality of the AIDS pandemic to true suffering and transformation. His political epic Homebody/Kabul engages the issue of terrorism and conflicting fundamental beliefs. In this book 11 scholars explore the works of Tony Kushner across his career. Several address Angels: one explores the presentation of homosexuality by Kushner compared to that of Tennessee Williams, who wrote in a less tolerant era; another places Angels in the contexts of Hegel's concept of freedom and the gay revolution; a third discusses the play in terms of queer theory and politics. Homebody/Kabul is examined in two essays, one analyzing media reaction, the other exploring cultural and economic differences, religious fundamentalism and the "West's luxurious predominance in the world." Other studies address relationships in Kushner's works to William Inge's 1950 play Come Back, Little Sheba; the plays of experimentalist Adrienne Kennedy; and fascist creep in the era of playwrights W.H. Auden and Christopher Isherwood, among other topics.

Tony Sarg (1880–1942), an American artist born in Guatemala to a diplomatic family, first achieved professional success as an illustrator in London and New York. But in the 1920s, he gained even greater renown for his touring puppet shows based on classic tales like Alice in Wonderland and Robinson Crusoe. Fusing the time-honoured craft of traditional marionette shows with a playful modern sensibility, Sarg’s productions were foundational to American puppetry: Jim Henson can be considered a direct artistic descendant. Yet this was only one facet of Sarg’s varied accomplishments: he was also a pioneer in animated films and children’s books, and, as a longtime designer for Macy’s, he invented the gigantic balloons used in the firm’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. (He also employed one of his parade balloons in the famous Nantucket Sea Serpent hoax of 1937.) This abundantly illustrated volume, published to coincide with a major exhibition organised by the Norman Rockwell Museum, is the first to survey Tony Sarg’s protean career. It brings together imagery and artifacts from numerous public and private collections, and includes special sections on Sarg’s long association with the island of Nantucket and his influence on American puppetry. Tony Sarg: Genius at Play will be essential reading for anyone with an interest in the history of popular culture.

The author of eighteen spellbinding detective novels set on the Navajo Nation, Tony Hillerman simultaneously transformed a traditional genre and unlocked the mysteries of the Navajo culture to an audience of millions. His best-selling novels added Navajo Tribal Police detectives Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee to the pantheon of American fictional detectives. Morris offers a balanced portrait of Hillerman’s personal and professional life and provides a timely appreciation of his work. In intimate detail, Morris captures the author’s early years in Depression-era Oklahoma; his near-death experience in World War II; his sixty-year marriage to Marie; his family life, including six children, five of them adopted; his work in the trenches of journalism; his affliction with PTSD and its connection to his enchantment with Navajo spirituality; and his ascension as one of America’s best-known authors of mysteries. Further, Morris uncovers the almost accidental invention of Hillerman’s iconic detective Joe Leaphorn and the circumstances that led to the addition of Jim Chee as his partner. Hillerman’s novels were not without controversy. Morris examines the charges of cultural appropriation leveled at the author toward the end of his life. Yet, for many readers, including many Native Americans, Hillerman deserves critical acclaim for his knowledgeable and sensitive portrayal of DinÉ (Navajo) history, culture, and identity. At the time of Hillerman’s death, more than 20 million copies of his books were in print, and his novels inspired Robert Redford to adapt them to film. In weaving together all the elements of the author’s life, Morris drew on the untapped collection of the author’s papers, extensive archival research, interviews with friends, colleagues, and family, as well as travel in the Navajo Nation. Filled with never-before-told anecdotes and fresh insights, Tony Hillerman will thrill the author’s fans and awaken new interest in his life and literary legacy.

Tony Allen is the autobiography of legendary Nigerian drummer Tony Allen, the rhythmic engine of Fela Kuti's Afrobeat. Conversational, inviting, and packed with telling anecdotes, Allen's memoir is based on hundreds of hours of interviews with the musician and scholar Michael E. Veal. It spans Allen's early years and career playing highlife music in Lagos; his fifteen years with Fela, from 1964 until 1979; his struggles to form his own bands in Nigeria; and his emigration to France. Allen embraced the drum set, rather than African handheld drums, early in his career, when drum kits were relatively rare in Africa. His story conveys a love of his craft along with the specifics of his practice. It also provides invaluable firsthand accounts of the explosive creativity in postcolonial African music, and the personal and artistic dynamics in Fela's Koola Lobitos and Africa 70, two of the greatest bands to ever play African music.

Tony Benn

Tony Benn

David Powell

For much of his half-century career in the House of Commons, Tony Benn has been the most loved and loathed man in British politics. He has been idolized by the left, and reviled with equal measure by the Westminster establishment , not least by New Labour. Once tipped to lead the Labour Party, Benn's growing disillusionment with what he regarded as the "democratic deficit" infecting politics, reinforced his resolve to continue playing the role he valued most, as "a good House of Commons Man".David Powell's fascinating new biography traces Tony Benn's extraordinary fifty year political career from the day he first entered the House in 1950. He argues that Benn's commitment to the House of Commons was fortified by his experiences during the thirty months when he fought to renounce his peerage and remain an MP; then during the twelve years he spent in government, and finally during the two decades he spent on the back benches, having been defeated in the bruising campaign for the Deputy Leadership of the Labour Party. Each was to provide him with an insight into the workings of power and cumulatively they were to convince him of the charade that passed for democracy not only in Westminster and in the Labour Party, but in the European Union and in the wider in the global context, with democratic ideals subordinated to the political and economic power of the United States. Benn has always a controversial figure. He was widely caricatured as "Bogey Benn" by the Tories during the 1970s and was more recently anathematised by Tony Blair as the man who "almost knocked the Labour party over the edge of the cliff into extinction". Nonetheless many of the policies he championed, and for which he was widely belittled, have since entered the statute books. Indeed, if history is a chronicle of ironies, there can have been little more ironic than when, following Benn's valedictory speech in the Commons in 2001, a Tory backbencher commended him to fellow MPs as Britain's "greatest living Parliamentarian".
