Titrimetrische Methoden zur Bestimmung des Urans weisen gegeniiber den gravimetrischen Verfahren (s. Abschnitt 1) mehrere Vorteile auf. Man kann mit ihnen das Uran in einem wesentlich gro.6eren Konzentrationsbereich, miteingeschlossen Mikrogrammengen dieses Elements, erfassen, und die Bestimmungen lassen sich innerhalb einer wesentlich kiirzeren Zeit mit oft gro.6erer Genauigkeit als gravi- metrische durchfiihren. Ferner werden die Titrationsmethoden nicht so stark durch Fremd-Ionen gestort. Die titrimetrischen Verfahren zur Uranbestimmung lassen sich ganz allgemein in zwei gro.6e Gruppen unterteilen, und zwar in eine solche, in der die Titration des Urans nach vorhergehender Reduktion zum Uran(IV) erfolgt, und in eine andere Gruppe, deren Methoden auf der Titration von Uran(VI)-Ionen (Uranyl-Ionen) beruhen. Nach vorangehender Reduktion des Urans(VI) zum vierwertigen Oxydations- zustand mittels geeigneter Reduktionsmittel (s. Abschnitt 2.2) wird das Uran(IV) mit Cer(IV)-, Kaliumpermanganat-, Kaliumdichromat-, Vanadat-, Eisen(III)-losun- gen usw. titriert (s. Abschnitt 2.3.1). Zur Endpunktsanzeige der Titration konnen visuelle, spektrophotometrische oder elektrometrische Verfahren herangezogen werden. Dieses Redoxprinzip, nach dem das vorher reduzierte Uran durch diese Oxydationsmittel wieder in den sechswertigen Zustand zuriickgefiihrt wird, stellt die Grundlage der meisten und genauesten, bis jetzt bekannt gewordenen titrimetrischen Methoden zur Uran-Bestimmung dar. Es ist auch moglich, das Uran(IV) unter An- wendung geeigneter Indikatoren komplexometrisch zu bestimmen (s. Abschnitt 2.3.2).

235 Als im Jahre 1940 das Problem entstand, das Uranisotop U anzureichern, lag es nahe, das kurz vorher von CLUSIUS und DICKEL 1J gefundene und von uns 2J fur gasformige Isotope schwerer Elemente (Krypton, Xenon, Queck silber) verwendete Thermodiffusionstrennrohr auf das Uranhexafluoridgas anzuwenden. Wir stellten ein aus zwei koaxialen Nickelrohren bestehendes Trennrohr 3] her, dessen inneres Rohr durch hochgespannten Wasserdampf oder den Dampf siedenden Quecksilbers geheizt und dessen AuBenrohr ge kuhlt wurde. Die Lange betrug 5,70 m, der Abstand zwischen heiBer und kalter Wand 3 mm. Es stellte sich heraus, daB die Thermodiffusion in Gas phase fur UF kein geeignetes Trennverfahren ist, weil in dem - aus che 6 mischen Grunden - zuganglichen Temperaturintervall der Unterschied der Thermodiffusionskoeffizienten der schweren und leichten UF - Molekule 6 praktisch gleich Null ist. Schon im Jahre 1941 begannen wir deshalb, das Ultrazentrifugenverfahren, das schon von BEAMS 4], zum Teil in der von MULLIKEN 5] vorgeschlage nen Form einer Verdampfungszentrifuge, fur die Anreicherung der Isotope gas- oder dampfformiger Elemente verwendet worden war, fur die Anreiche rung der Uranisotope heranzuziehen 6J. Es ist fur die Anreicherung der Isotope schwerer Elemente - so weit sie in Dampfform vorliegen - beson ders geeignet, da seine Trennwirkung von der absoluten Massendifferenz fiM und nicht - wie die fast aller anderen Trennverfahren - von der re lativen Massendifferenz M/M bzw. ihrer Wurzel abhangig ist. Die zu trennenden isotopen Atome konnen deshalb in beliebig schwere Molekule eingebaut werden, ohne daB die Trennwirkung geringer wird."

Der Uranbergbau ist mit erheblichem Risiko f r Mensch und Umwelt verbunden, und seine Hinterlassenschaften stellen mit vielen lokalen Schwerpunkten ein weltweit verbreitetes Problem dar. Die besondere Gef hrdung des Uranbergbaus ergibt sich daraus, dass das Uran mit seinen festen oder wasserl slichen Verbindungen und gasf rmigen radioaktiven Zerfallsprodukten an die Umweltmedien abgegeben werden kann. Die eingetragenen Radionuklide werden in die kosystemaren Stofftransfers integriert und transformiert. Es ist daher notwendig, die Wege zu verfolgen, auf denen die in die Umweltmedien gelangten radioaktiven wie auch toxischen Stoffe in Kontakt zum Menschen kommen k nnen. Die Hauptaufgabe dieser Arbeit war die Untersuchung des Umfangs der Uran- und Radiumfestlegung bzw. der Mobilisierung in subhydrischen B den und Sedimenten sowie Bestandsabfall (Detritus) eines dynamischen Flie gew sser kosystems unmittelbar unterhalb einer Quelle am Tailing-Damm sowie die Analyse und Diskussion m glicher Mechanismen der Festlegung und Mobilisierung.
