Werner's handbook became an invaluable resource for naturalists and anthropologists, including Charles Darwin, who used it to identify colors in nature during his seminal voyage on the HMS Beagle. Werner's terminology lent both precision and lyricism to Darwin's pioneering writings, enabling his readers to envision a world they would never see. This book is a fictional account of the life of German film and theatre actor Werner Krauss, eponymous star of the classic silent film The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari. Upon gaining worldwide recognition in this film, Krauss was co-opted into the Nazi hate campaign of the 1930s and 1940s. He featured in the vicious propaganda film Jud Suss, and he was complicit in giving anti-Semitic performances onstage, most notably as Shylock in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. The book focuses on three distinct eras in Krauss' life: the struggling, exuberant actor of the 1920s; the philandering pragmatist of the 1930s; and the elderly, neurotic outcast of the 1940s. Despite his honourable intentions, Krauss was all-too-often undermined by his inability to say no to women, alcohol and the egregious Joseph Goebbels. In this fictional re-imagining of his life, Krauss' motives and decisions are explored in an attempt to discover why he collaborated with the Nazis in the way that he did, as well as demonstrating the personal and political consequences of his actions. As someone who was influenced by the Nazi regime, and, in turn, influential in perpetuating their message, Krauss' story tells the wider story of the role of the arts and media in Nazi Germany. Werner Beierwaltes Lux Intelligibilis: Investigation on the Metaphysics of Light of the Greeks
Thus far unpublished even in its original German, Lux intelligibilis. Investigation on the Metaphysics of Light of the Greeks, submitted by Werner Beierwaltes as a doctoral dissertation in 1957, is presented here for the first time in English translation. Beierwaltes' investigation begins by describing the metaphoric and symbolic power attributed to light in the foundational texts of Greek antiquity. The analysis also examines the theophany or divine manifestation through light apparitions, particularly in the context of the Eleusinian mysteries. It then traces the shift from a symbolism of light to a metaphysics of light that, beginning with Pythagoras and Parmenides, takes on its full form with the impactful Platonic insight of the light-like nature of the intelligible. This is a programmatic work that presents in embryonic form themes that would later be revisited by the author throughout his vast body of work. Beierwaltes thus begins his journey through some of the central themes of the Neoplatonic tradition and its later reception, a journey that will lead him to dwell on thinkers of the stature of Eriugena, Meister Eckhart and Nicholas of Cusa. The English translation of Lux intelligibilis. Investigation on the Metaphysics of Light of the Greeks is accompanied by an introduction to the person and work of Werner Beierwaltes by Claudia D’Amico, as well as by a substantial Essay as PostScriptum by Enrico Peroli, which allow the reader to grasp the enormous contribution of the original text. The English translation has been revised by Tadeo Lima, and the tracing and careful transcription of the Greek and Latin sources and references was carried out by Ezequiel Ludueña.

Swiss photographer Werner Bischof (1916–54) is best known for his impressive black-and-white images, most of which were taken on expeditions as a reporter in postwar Europe and during the Indochina War (1946–54), and on his travels in the Far East and South America. Far too little known are Bischof’s early colour photographs, comprising studio work in fashion and advertising photography as well as reportage from war-damaged European cities. For these, Bischof used various types of camera, including a Devin Tricolour. This elaborate colour-separation device exposed three monochrome plates in a single exposure, each of them equipped with a colour filter so that a true colour print was subsequently made by addition of the three monochrome negatives. Some 200 of Bischof’s Devin Tricolour negatives have been restored and a selection of them is published for the first time ever in this book. The beautifully illustrated volume is fascinating not only from a photo-historical perspective. Even these early colour images reveal Bischof's outstanding, sensitive aesthetic that characterises his entire oeuvre. Some 100 colour plates are supplemented with texts by Clara Bouveresse, the French photography historian, Peter Pfrunder, the director of the Fotostiftung Schweiz in Winterthur, and Luc Debraine, the director of the Swiss Camera Museum in Vevey.

Mit dieser Studie erschließt sich ein bislang vernachlässigtes theologiegeschichtliches Kapitel, das zugleich exemplarisch Problem- und Argumentationszusammenhänge rekonstruiert, die von gegenwärtiger Relevanz für die Behandlung der „apologetischen“ Fragestellung sind. In der Konzentration auf Elerts Schriften von 1910 bis 1923 werden die biographisch-theologischen Wurzeln seines apologetischen Interesses aufgezeigt und die geschichtsphilosophische wie religionspsychologische Grundlegung seiner Apologetik sowie die zeitdiagnostisch wie erlebnistheologisch bedingten Verschiebungen der Perspektiven nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg umfassend dargestellt. Sie erweisen sich dabei als Konstitutionshorizont von Elerts späterem Konfessionalismus, der in der Theologiegeschichtsschreibung bin in die Gegenwart hinein blickverengend als theologisches Markenzeichen des „Lutheranissimus“ tradiert wird. Indem die Eigenständigkeit von Elerts Position neben den bekannteren Wegen der liberalen Theologie, aber auch der Dialektischen Theologie verdeutlicht wird, bietet die Untersuchung zugleich einen Beitrag zur Geschichte der theologischen Apologetik des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts in ihrem wissenschaftlichen wie kulturpraktischen Interesse.

Die Arbeiten von Werner Jaeger haben vor etwa hundert Jahren das Studium der Antike prägend und international beeinflusst, insbesondere im Bereich der Geschichte der antiken Wissenschaft und Philosophie, doch bleibt die Figur Jaegers umstritten. Er steht am Ende einer Glanzzeit der Philologie an der Berliner Universität und erlangte früh internationale Anerkennung sowie enormen Einfluss. Sowohl sein wissenschaftliches Werk als auch seine Paideia wurden stark rezipiert, letztere sogar in viele Sprachen übersetzt.
