Ottoman Painting

Ottoman Painting

Wendy M.K. Shaw

The late Ottoman Empire witnessed widespread and dramatic reform, which was vividly reflected in its visual culture. However, while other political and social developments in this period have received much attention, the interaction between Ottoman and Western artists and artistic practices is less widely understood. Ottoman Painting explores fully this complex and fascinating relationship for the first time, using vivid examples and drawing many intriguing and original connections. Wendy M. K. Shaw demonstrates how during the 19th century - the very era when rapidly proliferating modernist artistic movements in the West were giving up traditional styles, techniques and functions of art - artists in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey were harnessing these discarded traditions as a novel and modern means of communication. And far from being simply slow in embracing modernity, Ottoman art tells the story of a different kind of avant-garde, representing a cultural revolution. Ottoman Painting is an important corrective to a Western-dominated view of the art history of an era and a stimulating addition to our understanding of the cultural life of the late Ottoman Empire.

Pumpkins at Midnight: A Woman's Guide to Love, Dating, and Marriage in the Age of Porn
In today's screen-saturated world, too many people are learning to objectify other humans before they have a fighting chance to understand how relationships work. This is even more true when those screens portray the unrealistic version of sexuality that pornography peddles. Longing for strong, equal life partnerships, many women are seeking practical advice on how to keep pornography's lies from invading their relationships. Pumpkins at Midnight: A Woman's Guide to Love, Dating, and Marriage in the Age of Porn gives women an empowering and panic-free approach to a topic that may otherwise feel overwhelming: talking about and confronting pornography as a team. This research-based book teaches readers a revolutionary approach to addressing pornography. Rather than relying on magical thinking that a years-long porn habit will just disappear, readers learn the exact steps to have a structured, compassionate conversation about pornography. They also gain confidence in the power of emphasizing honesty and accountability over behavior management, which helps couples build mature and healthy relationships from the get-go. What's more, the authors teach five proven techniques to work as a team to overcome compulsive porn use.

Even though women consistently receive better grades in math and science, men excel on math aptitude tests and are greatly overrepresented in the so-called hard sciences. The Mathematics of Sex explores why males are overrepresented in mathematically intensive professions such as physics, computer science, chemistry, mathematics, and engineering. Bringing together for the first time important research from such diverse fields as endocrinology, economics, sociology, education, genetics, and psychology, the authors show that two factors--the parenting choices women (but not men) have to make, and the tendency of bright women to choose people-oriented fields like medicine--largely account for the under-representation of women in the hard sciences. Further, research shows that biology itself--differences in hormones or brain organization--does not fully account for the problem. Compressing an enormous amount of information--over 400 studies--into a readable, engaging account suitable for parents, educators, and policymakers, this book advances the debate about women in science unlike any other book before it.
