Twilight Memories

Twilight Memories

Andreas Huyssen

Routledge
1994
nidottu
In this new collection of essays on memory and amnesia in the postmodern world, cultural critic Andreas Huyssen considers how nationalism, literature, art, politics, and the media are obsessed with the past. The great paradox of our fin-de-siecle culture is that novelty is even more associated with memory than with future expectation. Drawing heavily on the dilemmas of contemporary Germany, Huyssen's discussion of cultural memory illustrates the nature of contemporary nationalism, the work of such artists and thinkers as Anselm Kiefer, Alexander Kluge, and Jean Baudrillard, and many others. The book includes illustrations from contemporary Germany.

Dynamic Loading and Design of Structures
Until now, information on the dynamic loading of structures has been widely scattered. No other book has examined the different types of loading in a comprehensive and systematic manner, and looked at their signficance in the design process. The book begins with a survey of the probabilistic background to all forms of loads, which is particularly important to dynamic loads, and then looks at the main types in turn: wind, earthquake, wave, blast and impact loading. The relevant code provisions (Eurocode and UBC American) are detailed and a number of examples are used to illustrate the principles. A final section covers the analysis for dynamic loading, drawing out the concepts underlying the treatment of all dynamic loads, and the corresponding modelling techniques. Throughout there is a focus on the modelling of structures, rather than on classical structural dynamics.
Stochastic Transport in Complex Systems

Stochastic Transport in Complex Systems

Andreas Schadschneider; Debashish Chowdhury; Katsuhiro Nishinari

Elsevier Science Ltd
2010
nidottu
The first part of the book provides a pedagogical introduction to the physics of complex systems driven far from equilibrium. In this part we discuss the basic concepts and theoretical techniques which are commonly used to study classical stochastic transport in systems of interacting driven particles. The analytical techniques include mean-field theories, matrix product ansatz, renormalization group, etc. and the numerical methods are mostly based on computer simulations. In the second part of the book these concepts and techniques are applied not only to vehicular traffic but also to transport and traffic-like phenomena in living systems ranging from collective movements of social insects (for example, ants) on trails to intracellular molecular motor transport. These demonstrate the conceptual unity of the fundamental principles underlying the apparent diversity of the systems and the utility of the theoretical toolbox of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics in interdisciplinary research far beyond the traditional disciplinary boundaries of physics.

Data for the People

Data for the People

Andreas Weigend

A long-time chief data scientist at Amazon shows how open data can make everyone, not just corporations, richerEvery time we Google something, Facebook someone, Uber somewhere, or even just turn on a light, we create data that businesses collect and use to make decisions about us. In many ways this has improved our lives, yet, we as individuals do not benefit from this wealth of data as much as we could. Moreover, whether it is a bank evaluating our credit worthiness, an insurance company determining our risk level, or a potential employer deciding whether we get a job, it is likely that this data will be used against us rather than for us.In Data for the People, Andreas Weigend draws on his years as a consultant for commerce, education, healthcare, travel and finance companies to outline how Big Data can work better for all of us. As of today, how much we benefit from Big Data depends on how closely the interests of big companies align with our own. Too often, outdated standards of control and privacy force us into unfair contracts with data companies, but it doesn't have to be this way. Weigend makes a powerful argument that we need to take control of how our data is used to actually make it work for us. Only then can we the people get back more from Big Data than we give it.Big Data is here to stay. Now is the time to find out how we can be empowered by it.
Exotic Option Pricing and Advanced Lévy Models

Exotic Option Pricing and Advanced Lévy Models

2005
sidottu
Since around the turn of the millennium there has been a general acceptance that one of the more practical improvements one may make in the light of the shortfalls of the classical Black-Scholes model is to replace the underlying source of randomness, a Brownian motion, by a Lévy process. Working with Lévy processes allows one to capture desirable distributional characteristics in the stock returns. In addition, recent work on Lévy processes has led to the understanding of many probabilistic and analytical properties, which make the processes attractive as mathematical tools. At the same time, exotic derivatives are gaining increasing importance as financial instruments and are traded nowadays in large quantities in OTC markets. The current volume is a compendium of chapters, each of which consists of discursive review and recent research on the topic of exotic option pricing and advanced Lévy markets, written by leading scientists in this field. In recent years, Lévy processes have leapt to the fore as a tractable mechanism for modeling asset returns. Exotic option values are especially sensitive to an accurate portrayal of these dynamics. This comprehensive volume provides a valuable service for financial researchers everywhere by assembling key contributions from the world's leading researchers in the field. Peter Carr, Head of Quantitative Finance, Bloomberg LP. This book provides a front-row seat to the hottest new field in modern finance: options pricing in turbulent markets. The old models have failed, as many a professional investor can sadly attest. So many of the brightest minds in mathematical finance across the globe are now in search of new, more accurate models. Here, in one volume, is a comprehensive selection of this cutting-edge research. Richard L. Hudson, former Managing Editor of The Wall Street Journal Europe, and co-author with Benoit B. Mandelbrot of The (Mis)Behaviour of Markets: A Fractal View of Risk, Ruin and Reward

Systems Engineering with SDL

Systems Engineering with SDL

Andreas Mitschele-Thiel

John Wiley Sons Inc
2001
sidottu
"This uniquely practical guide to developing performance applicaitons doesn't just tell you how to analyse and predict performance, it demonstrates how to actually achieve performance in a product. It combines a development process view with a low level discussion on implementation details in a comprehensive and well-structured reference which every SDL developer should have on their shelf." Anders Ek, Chief Methodologist, Telelogic AB Perfomrance problems make projects fail. Unfortunately, they are often detected late in the development cycle adding considerable cost to the project and increasing time-to-market. Systems Engineering with SDL is a practical guide to designing and implementing communication systems and distributed applications, which tackles performance issues at their origin. After introducing the reader to performance engineering concepts, the book focuses on SDL and MSC. SDL is the most widely used formal description technique in the communications arena and is increasingly used in conjunction with UML to support formal design and implementation. The book goes on to demonstrate how to deal with specific issues such as inappropriate performance requirements, unsuitable system architecture and insufficiently detailed design or implementation decisions. Aimed at experienced communication system designers and architects, this book goes beyond the basics to provide a detailed understanding of how to create high-performance real-time applications. * Illustrates how to bring perfomrance and efficiency issues right to the forefront of the design process and ensure they are carried through to implementation. * Guides you through the development process with reference to both waterfall and non-waterfall models. * Provides coding guidelines to ensure implementation is smooth and trouble-free. * Shows how SDL can be used alongside complementary languages and notations. * Addresses project management issues in the development process. * Provides an update on SDL-2000 and the new features that will affect your design. Andreas Mitschele-Thiel is a Research Engineer at Bell Labs, working in the Global Wireless Systems area. He is also the Associate Rapporteur at the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) responsible for performance and time aspects of the SDL standard, so he is well positioned to write this up-to-date and comprehensive reference.
Physics, Chemistry and Technology of Solid State Gas Sensor Devices

Physics, Chemistry and Technology of Solid State Gas Sensor Devices

Andreas Mandelis; Constantinos Christofides

John Wiley Sons Inc
1993
sidottu
Research and development of solid state gas sensor devices began in the 1950s with several uncoordinated independent efforts. The number and pace of these investigations later accelerated in response to increasing pressure placed on the environment and public health by industrial activities. Since 1970, several thousand articles have been written on the subject, and laboratories around the globe have introduced novel methodologies and devices to address needs associated with particular technological developments. Despite the rapid development of this important new technology, very little has been done to review and coordinate data related to sensor science and technology itself. Physics, Chemistry and Technology of Solid State Gas Sensor Devices focuses on the underlying principles of solid state sensor operation and reveals the rich fabric of interdisciplinary science that governs modern sensing devices. Beginning with some historical and scientific background, the text proceeds to a study of the interactions of gases with surfaces. Subsequent chapters present detailed information on the fabrication, performance, and application of a variety of sensors. Types of sensor devices discussed include: Gas-sensitive solid state semiconductor sensorsPhotonic and photoacoustic gas sensorsFiber optic sensorsPiezoelectric quartz crystal microbalance sensorsSurface acoustic wave sensorsPyroelectric and thermal sensors For analytical chemists using solid state sensors in environment-related analysis, and for electrical engineers working with solid state sensors, this book will expand and unify their understanding of these devices, both in theory and practice.
