Andrew Crozier (1943-2008) was a poet, and an energiser of poetry. A champion of work excluded from the familiar canon, he brought to the English literary landscape of the 1960s and 70s an engagement with the energies of American poetry. As a publisher and critic he helped to create a space for new voices within English poetry: for George Oppen, Carl Rakosi, Roy Fisher, J.H. Prynne. His own poetry is meticulous in its attention to language, exhilarating in its inventiveness and force. Crozier wrote that, for him, 'becoming a poet had to do with finding a mode for making sense of ...being alive', and his writing is alive with the possibilities of language. Ian Brinton, editor of The Use of English until 2011 and author of Contemporary Poetry since 1990, has brought together a comprehensive selection of Crozier's poetry and prose, much of it previously out of print or scattered in small press publications. Biographical and critical notes and a detailed bibliography complete this landmark edition of one of the essential figures in modern poetry.
Thrills and Frills - Selected Prose of Andrew Crozier
Almost without exception the prose of Andrew Crozier, reviews and articles centred upon the close reading of poetry including fearless debate about the importance of some figures who have either been overlooked by the establishment or given little more than a cursory nod of acknowledgement, has been out of print for far too long. The work, often published in journals or as contributory chapters to other books, has never before been collected together and this seems astonishing. -from Ian Brinton's introduction to this volume.

Andrew Burke's 'New and Selected: 2020' is the latest of the many poetry collections by this noted writer, an Australian poet who has lived most of his life in Perth. After his birth in Melbourne in 1944, Burke's family moved west to expand the family business. In his teens, Burke read 'Beat' writers, and they gained his interest more than school work. He published his first short story at 18. He has written on a daily basis ever since-stories, plays, poems, and-to feed family-advertising material and videos. From 1990, Burke taught creative writing and modern literature at universities, TAFE colleges and writing centres. In 2006, he and his wife Jeanette travelled to China where they taught at Shanxi Normal University, Linfen, and, on their return, they taught indigenous children in The Kimberley area of North West Australia. He now dedicates life fulltime to reading and writing.
Andrew Crawfurd's Collection of Ballads and Songs
The collection of one of the most active and interesting of Scotland’s ballad collectors Crawfurd’s collection sought out those texts that were preserved through oral rather than written tradition and this imparts a particular distinction to his corpus. Versions of famous ballads featured in these volumes include “The Cruel Mother”, “The Three Ravens”, and “The Wee Wee Man”.

Andrew Cranston (b.1969, Hawick, Scotland; lives and works in Glasgow) is a painter-storyteller, a way of working that is enhanced by his often painting on the linen-bound covers of old books. His stories coalesce in the process of making – the paintings emerging gradually through the manipulation of his materials: layering, lacquering, bleaching, collaging and constantly re-working his way into images that seem to shift backwards and forwards in time. He once described a work as ‘a painting that came out of my brush one day’, a statement that sums up his approach. They are resolutely contemporary in spirit and yet connected by a strong thread to painters of the past, especially perhaps to the intimism of Vuillard and Bonnard, or to Matisse or Munch. These are narrative paintings, drawn from the artist’s memory and observations of life and liberally sprinkled with references to cinema, literature and art history. This publication presents a selection of the book cover paintings for which Cranston has become so well known in recent years. The cover image is a detail of _Cat and cheeseboard_ (2018) in which a cat sits on the upholstered arm of a sofa surveying what the artist describes as ‘a selection of bries and camemberts, as mousetraps’. Other animals pop up from time to time – a horse, some fish, a leopard; the skeleton of an elk. There are still lifes with fruit, flowers and/or pottery, and lots of landscapes, from the bleak to the fantastical. There are peopled and unpeopled interiors, portraits of family members and celebrities (occasionally curious hybrids thereof), and childhood memories from school classrooms and classical music-filled assemblies to holidays in Switzerland and visits to granny’s flat. And there are quite a few watering cans too. Each featured painting is accompanied by a text based on notes made by the artist before, during or after making a work. Mostly private thoughts, memories and anecdotes, these fragments jotted down on scraps of paper or tapped into his mobile phone were never intended to be published, but the resulting texts offer personal observations and reflections that Cranston considers ‘something like album sleeve notes where a musical artist might give some background to each song’. The texts are at times amusing, at others melancholic and moving, offering illuminating insights into the mind and life of the artist and the subjects, references and influences that feed into his painting practice. There are notes about technique and colour, about family and friends, about particular places at certain moments in time. For Cranston, writing has become ‘another way of engaging with painting and of activating the interesting afterlife that a work can have when it leaves the studio and goes out into the world.’ _Andrew Cranston – Never a Joiner_ has been produced by Ingleby, Edinburgh, and co-published with Anomie Publishing, London. It has been published to coincide with an exhibition of the same name at Ingleby, Edinburgh, and launched as part of the Edinburgh Art Festival 2023.Andrew Cranston was born in Hawick in the Scottish Borders in 1969 and currently lives and works in Glasgow. He studied at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen and at the Royal College of Art in London. The Collected Supernatural and Weird Fiction of Sir Andrew Caldecott
Weird Tales of the Oriental and OccidentalAndrew Caldecott was not pre-disposed to be an author of strange fi ction or indeed of any other genre. Born in England in 1884 during the Victorian age, he was bound for the Colonial Offi ce to be an administrator for that 'empire upon which the sun never set'. By 1934 he was Acting Governor of the Straits Settlements (which included Malacca, Dindings, Penang and Singapore) followed by an appointment to the governorship of Hong Kong and thereafter of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) until 1944. He was knighted in 1935. Caldecott, however, also engaged in several diversions beyond his professional life. Although he had contributed several articles concerning Malayan history to journals, his excursions into the literature of the supernatural came late in life with the publication of two volumes of shorter ghostly fi ction, ' Not Exactly Ghosts' (1947) and, 'Fires Burn Blue' (1948). Although he was awarded numerous decorations during his lifetime and has several roads, an underground railway station (and a hill )named after him in Singapore, it may be that posterity will remember him for these fi nely crafted chilling tales written, one may imagine, for his own entertainment. Predictably several of these stories have oriental themes drawn from an exotic world with which he was most familiar and take their styling cuesin keeping with several amateur supernatural fi ction authors- from M.R. James. Sir Andrew Caldecott died in 1951. 'Sonata in D Minor', 'Seated One Day At The Organ', 'A Victim of Medusa' and many other tales will be found in these pages.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
