Survival of the City: The Future of Urban Life in an Age of Isolation
"Expansive and entertaining. . . . A] fast-paced and highly readable journey . . . the book serves as a useful tool in the effort to redefine the role of the city in an age of increasingly polarized politics, and reminds us that urban health is--as Fiorello La Guardia once remarked about cleaning the streets--not a Democratic or Republican issue." --New York Times Book Review One of our great urbanists and one of our great public health experts join forces to reckon with how cities are changing in the face of existential threats the pandemic has only accelerated Cities can make us sick. That's always been true--diseases spread more easily when more people are close to one another. And cities have been demonized as breeding grounds for vice and crime from Sodom and Gomorrah on. But cities have flourished nonetheless because they are humanity's greatest invention, indispensable engines for creativity, innovation, wealth, and civilization itself. But cities now stand at a crossroads. During the global COVID crisis, cities grew silent; the normal forms of socializing ground to a halt. How permanent are these changes? Advances in technology mean that many people can opt out of city life as never before. Will they? Are we on the brink of a post-urban world? City life will survive, but individual cities face terrible risks, argue Edward Glaeser and David Cutler, and a wave of urban failure would be absolutely disastrous. In terms of intimacy and inspiration, nothing can replace what cities offer. But great cities have always demanded great management, and our current crisis has exposed fearful gaps in our capacity for good governance. In America, Glaeser and Cutler argue, deep inequities in health care and education are a particular blight on the future of our cities; solving them will be the difference between our collective good health and a downward spiral to a much darker place.

The use of the chassis dynamometer test cells has been an integral part of the vehicle development and validation process for several decades, focusing on the delivery of clean, efficient vehicles globally. This type of testing involves specialists from different fields such as mechanics, ventilation and refrigeration, among others. Not all of them necessarily experts in automotive engineering. As the demands on chassis dynamometer testing become more exacting and more diverse, the challenge of delivering effective installations and operating procedures becomes ever greater. Chassis Dynamometer Testing sets out to gather knowledge from multiple groups of specialists to better understand the testing challenges associated with the vehicle chassis dynamometer test cells, and enable informed design and use of these facilities.Chassis Dynamometer Testing analyses the main factors affecting a vehicle in order to closely reproduce them in a testing facility. It provides complete guidance on how these tests should be performed, including the requirements affecting the test cells themselves so that they can be fully optimized.

"Both as a person and as a musician, he was number one in my book." —Benny Carter Bassist George Duvivier (1920-1985) was one of the most universally respected musicians in jazz. His impeccable musicianship graced the big bands in the 1940s and led to musical associations with virtually every important jazz and popular artist. His prolific recording career spanned all styles of music, from Eubie Blake to Eric Dolphy, Billie Holiday to Barry Manilow. Duvivier was a most astute and articulate observer of the musical scene. A large part of this book is devoted to his own reflections on growing up in Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s, the evolution of the bass, life in the commercial studios, and his memories of close associates—Coleman Hawkins, Jimmie Lunceford, Bud Powell, Lena Horne, and many others. In addition, twenty of Duvivier's colleagues, including Louie Bellson, Ron Carter, Milt Hinton, Ed Shaughnessy, Arthur Taylor, and Joe Wilder, have contributed, covering a variety of musical and social issues, as well as providing a loving portrait of an extraordinary artist. Duvivier's musical style is discussed by David Chevan, who has included transcriptions of several solos. An extensive discography/solography traces Duvivier's incredibly diverse recording career. With dozens of previously unpublished photos.
Shock Therapy

Shock Therapy

Shock therapy is making a comeback today in the treatment of serious mental illness. Despite its reemergence as a safe and effective psychiatric tool, however, it continues to be shrouded by a longstanding negative public image, not least due to films such as the classic One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, where the inmate of a psychiatric clinic (played by Jack Nicholson) is subjected to electro-shock to curb his rebellious behavior. Beyond its vilification in popular culture, the stereotype of convulsive therapy as a dangerous and inhumane practice is fuelled by professional posturing and public misinformation. Electroconvulsive therapy, or ECT, has in the last thirty years been considered a method of last resort in the treatment of debilitating depression, suicidal ideation, and other forms of mental illness. Yet, ironically, its effectiveness in treating these patients would suggest it as a frontline therapy, bringing relief from acute symptoms and saving lives. In this book, Edward Shorter and David Healy trace the controversial history of ECT and other "shock" therapies. Drawing on case studies, public debates, extensive interviews, and archival research, the authors expose the myths about ECT that have proliferated over the years. By showing ECT's often life-saving results, Shorter and Healy endorse a point of view that is hotly contested in professional circles and in public debates, but for the nearly half of all clinically depressed patients who do not respond to drugs, this book brings much needed hope.

When first published, Desert Images was a watershed project in the nascent environmental movement bringing together two titans of American literature and art in their heyday. Still resonating all these decades later, Muench s evocative photography and Abbey s fiery, poetic text remain an unsurpassed tribute to this extraordinary American landscape. Those who imagine that the desert is merely a monotonous vista of sand and rock will be surprised by the variety of landforms, plants, and other natural phenomena shown on these pages. As Abbey wrote, For some of those who have learned not only to live in but also to love the desert, it offers rewards greater than its visual appeal to the sense of beauty the promise implicit in all that rugged wildness, that open, unfenced, untrammeled space the sense of adventure, the reality of freedom, the hope of a refuge. This photographic and literary passport to a great American wilderness will be treasured by all those who cherish the natural world.

U.S. National Security and Foreign Direct Investment

Although a vital part of the US economy, foreign direct investment (FDI) in the United States periodically raises public and congressional alarms-as witnessed during Dubai Ports World's recent bid to acquire US port operations and Chinese firm CNOOC's attempt to buy US energy firm Unocal. Drawing fire from Congress are the Exon-Florio provisions of US law, which enable the president to block a foreign acquisition that threatens national security. This important new book finds that many proposed reforms risk harming the US economy without enhancing national security. The authors propose ways to strengthen the current interagency review of deals, including an improved process for reporting to Congress.

This Element offers a portrait of leadership exemplars in UK finance. It challenges the common trope that finance is morally bankrupt. More significantly, it provides an empirically informed account of what it means to lead ethically and by example. Drawing upon Linda Zagzebski's philosophy of moral exemplarism, as well as Braun and Clarke's reflexive approach to thematic analysis, this Element sifts through a rich interview dataset to identify three types of exemplary leader. The sage exemplifies a purpose-giving wisdom. The hero is admired for a courageous form of empathy. And the novice, an under-appreciated type of exemplar, is singled out for curiosity. Foregrounding the place of positive emotions in role modeling, this Element sheds light on the virtues and psychology of leading by example. It also serves as an exemplar of what the humanities can contribute to the dynamic field of leadership studies.

The Spiritual Narratives of Generation Z explores how the first smartphone generation narrates faith amid shifting religious practice and influencer culture. Grounded in pioneering research begun at the University of Oxford, it is the first study to use story completion and participatory co-analysis to place Gen Z voices at the center of religious inquiry. At its core is a typology of five narratives, from Divine Disillusionment to Simple Faith, that uncover young people’s latent beliefs and spiritual aspirations. Combining the breadth of qualitative analysis with the depth of narrative interpretation, this book offers fresh insights into how today’s youngest adults are reshaping the religious imagination, engaging with global religions and philosophies through their smartphones. It will appeal to students and scholars of religion and cultural studies, as well as anyone interested in how young people imagine religious and spiritual role models today.

Written by a highly qualified author team, the book presents tools for matrix analysis and is illustrated with extensive examples and software implementations. Beginning with a detailed exposition and review of the Gauss elimination method, the authors maintain readers’ interest with refreshing discussions regarding the issues of operation counts, computer speed and precision, complex arithmetic formulations, parameterization of solutions, and the logical traps that dictate strict adherence to Gauss’s instructions. The book heralds matrix formulation both as notational shorthand and as a quantifier of physical operations such as rotations, projections, reflections, and the Gauss reductions. Inverses and eigenvectors are visualized first in an operator context before being addressed computationally. Least squares theory is expounded in all its manifestations including optimization, orthogonality, computational accuracy, and even function theory. Fundamentals of Matrix Analysis with Applications also features: Novel approaches employed to explicate the QR, singular value, Schur, and Jordan decompositions and their applicationsCoverage of the role of the matrix exponential in the solution of linear systems of differential equations with constant coefficientsChapter-by-chapter summaries, review problems, technical writing exercises, select solutions, and group projects to aid comprehension of the presented concepts
Redefining Music Studies in an Age of Change

Redefining Music Studies in an Age of Change: Creativity, Diversity, Integration takes prevailing discourse about change in music studies to new vistas, as higher education institutions are at a critical moment of determining just what professional musicians and teachers need to survive and thrive in public life. The authors examine how music studies might be redefined through the lenses of creativity, diversity, and integration. which are the three pillars of the recent report of The College Music Society taskforce calling for reform.Focus is on new conceptions for existent areas—such as studio lessons and ensembles, academic history and theory, theory and culture courses, and music education coursework—but also on an exploration of music and human learning, and an understanding of how organizational change happens. Examination of progressive programs will celebrate strides in the direction of the task force vision, as well as extend a critical eye distinguishing between premature proclamations of “mission accomplished” and genuine transformation. The overarching theme is that a foundational, systemic overhaul has the capacity to entirely revitalize the European classical tradition. Practical steps applicable to wide-ranging institutions are considered—from small liberal arts colleges, to conservatory programs, large research universities, and regional state universities.
