Then Lucky Lukas / Laimingas Lukas told the story of a boy who wanted to become a champion basketball player. The Musical Genesis of Felix Mendelssohn's Paulus

Felix Mendelssohn is one of the most celebrated figures of the early Romantic period. As a composer of sacred texts, he is chiefly remembered today for the oratorios Paulus (1836) and Elijah (1846). In this groundbreaking study, Siegwart Reichwald offers a meticulous analysis of Paulus, beginning with a general overview of the oratorio traditions of the early nineteenth century. He details the phases of the compositional process of Paulus as well as principles governing its development. Numerous musical examples, figures, and tables accompany the text. This thorough treatment of Paulus, while shedding light on Mendelssohn's approach to the oratorio and to sacred music in general, will be of interest to students of musicology.

The Return of Felix Nogara

The Return of Felix Nogara

A major new novel of exile by the author of the critically acclaimed Marks of Birth. Critics called Pablo Medina's first novel, Marks of Birth, deserving of "a prominent spot in today's literature of exile" (Washington Post). In his new novel--set in New York; Miami; and Barata, an imaginary island in the Caribbean--Medina again explores the condition of expatriation, this time from the vantage point of an exile who returns. Sent to the United States from his native Barata at the age of twelve, Felix Nogara moves from place to place, unable to assimilate, remaining attached to his homeland through the legacy of history, politics, and poetry he has inherited from his family. After the dictator who has ruled the island nation for two generations dies, Felix returns. With the help of a taxi driver who becomes his guide in the upside-down world of Barata, Felix sets out to find his mother and to reclaim the culture and history he considers duly his. In his travels, he encounters the past through the ruins of his city, the present in the whirlwind of politics that is shaking the country after the death of the dictator, and the future when he falls in love and marries the woman not of his dreams but of his waking. Writing in the tradition of Alejo Carpentier and Jose Lezama Lima, Medina draws upon sources as disparate as the chronicles of the Indies and other histories of the Caribbean, Don Quixote, and modern masters such as Mark Twain and Gabriel Garcia Mcrquez to establish a dialogue between actuality and memory, fact and fancy. In Felix Nogara, he has created a universal character who embodies the exile's dilemma but who finally transcends his condition.

The dictator is dead and suddenly the exiles can return. So begins Pablo Medina's most compelling work to date, a novel set on Barata, the imaginary Caribbean island (not unlike Cuba). Sent to the United States at the age of twelve, Felix Nogara has remained attached to his native land through dissident fellow exiles and through his family legacy. Thirty-eight years later, he returns, and with a wise and sardonic cab driver as his guide, he travels through the ruined landscape to recover his lost history, his lost happiness: "Returning to Barata was like going back to Eden. It was like showing God who was really in control". With wit, imagination, and visionary insight, Medina takes the reader to an island in chaos in order to explore the deepest regions of an exile's heart.

The Lives of Felix V is compelling, powerful, and disturbingly prophetic, with 2 of 3 astounding revelations already having come true, and the third-- slowly evolving. From the horrors of the Second World War through the political and religious conspiracies of the postwar period, Joseph Orbi's novel carefully weaves together fiction with little known, and troubling historical fact in a story of intrigue, manipulation, and murder at the highest echelons of the Vatican. The novel chronicles the lives of two men: Felix Ronnoco, an orphan who grows up under the tutelage of a powerful member of the Vatican elite, and young Damir Pavelic', son of Ante Pavelic', the forgotten f hrer of World War II. Linking the two is a priest, who adopts Ronnoco and helps Ante Pavelic' and his family escape from Europe at the end of the war. The same man who, thirty-one years later, becomes the first non-Italian pope in 500 years, a pope with a daring and dangerous political vision. The Lives of Felix V is that rare event in literature that combines a sweeping and tightly-woven plot with vivid characters, suspense, biting wit, irreverence, tragedy, and romance, soaring to a climax of unprecedented boldness. It is more than a novel. It is prophecy.
