The Real Kenneth Grahame

The Real Kenneth Grahame

He wrote one of the most quintessentially English books, yet Kenneth Grahame (1859 -1932) was a Scot. He was four years old when his mother died and his father became an alcoholic, so Kenneth grew up with his grandmother who lived on the banks of the beloved River Thames. Forced to abandon his dreams of studying at Oxford, he was accepted as a clerk at the Bank of England where he became one of the youngest men to be made company secretary. He narrowly escaped death in 1903 when he was mistaken for the Bank's governor and shot at several times. He wrote secretly in his spare time for magazines and became a contemporary of contributors including Rudyard Kipling, George Bernard Shaw and WB Yeats. Kenneth's first book, Pagan Papers (1893) initiated his success, followed by The Golden Age (1895) and Dream Days (1898), which turned him into a celebrated author. Ironically, his most famous novel today was the least successful during his lifetime: The Wind in the Willows (1908) originated as letters to his disabled son, who was later found dead on a train line after a suspected suicide. Kenneth never recovered from the tragedy and died with a broken heart in earshot of the River Thames. His widow, Elspeth, dedicated the rest of her life to preserving her husband's name and promoting his work.

The Unquiet Englishman: A Life of Graham Greene

The Unquiet Englishman: A Life of Graham Greene

One of the most celebrated British writers of his generation, Graham Greene's own story was as strange and compelling as those he told of Pinkie the Mobster, Harry Lime, or the Whisky Priest. A journalist and MI6 officer, Greene sought out the inner narratives of war and politics across the world; he witnessed the Second World War, the Vietnam War, the Mau Mau Rebellion, the rise of Fidel Castro, and the guerrilla wars of Central America. His classic novels, including The Heart of the Matter and The Quiet American, are only pieces of a career that reads like a primer on the twentieth century itself. The Unquiet Englishman braids the narratives of Greene's extraordinary life. It portrays a man who was traumatized as an adolescent and later suffered a mental illness that brought him to the point of suicide on several occasions; it tells the story of a restless traveler and unfailing advocate for human rights exploring troubled places around the world, a man who struggled to believe in God and yet found himself described as a great Catholic writer; it reveals a private life in which love almost always ended in ruin, alongside a larger story of politicians, battlefields, and spies. Above all, The Unquiet Englishman shows us a brilliant novelist mastering his craft.A work of wit, insight, and compassion, this new biography of Graham Greene, the first undertaken in a generation, responds to the many thousands of pages of letters that have recently come to light and to new memoirs by those who knew him best. It deals sensitively with questions of private life, sex, and mental illness, and sheds new light on one of the foremost modern writers.

A groundbreaking Black artist and his career in the Jim Crow SouthThis book is the first biography of Graham Jackson (1903-1983), a virtuosic musician whose life story displays the complexities of being a Black professional in the segregated South. David Cason discusses how Jackson navigated a web of racial and social negotiations throughout his long career and highlights his little-known role in events of the twentieth century. Widely known for an iconic photo taken of him playing the accordion in tears at Franklin D. Roosevelt’s funeral, which became a Life magazine cover, Jackson is revealed here to have a much deeper story. He was a performer, composer, and high school music director known for his skills on the piano and organ. Jackson was among the first Black men to enlist in the Navy during World War II, helping recruit many other volunteers and raising over $2 million for the war effort. After the war he became a fixture at Atlanta music venues and in 1971, Governor Jimmy Carter proclaimed Jackson the State Musician of Georgia. Cason examines Jackson’s groundbreaking roles with a critical eye, taking into account how Jackson drew on his connections with white elites including Roosevelt, Coca-Cola magnate Robert Woodruff, and golfer Bobby Jones, and was censured by Black Power figures for playing songs associated with Confederate memory. Based on archival, newspaper, and interview materials, The Life and Music of Graham Jackson brings into view the previously unknown story of an ambitious and talented artist and his controversial approach to the politics and culture of his day. Publication of this work made possible by a Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

A Companion to Angus C.Graham's ""Chuang Tzu

Roth Harold D.

At the time of his death in 1991, Angus C. Graham was one of the world's premier authorities on classical Chinese philosophy. Of particular significance is his corpus of publications on Taoism, the most important of which was his groundbreaking translation of more than three-fourths of the Chuang Tzu, first published in 1981 and, until recently, out of print for almost a decade. The current volume gathers together for the first time Graham's writings on the textual criticism and philosophy of the Chuang Tzu, most of which have heretofore been published in obscure sources. The most important of these are the textual notes that Graham wrote for publication with his original Chuang Tzu translation but which were never included therein. They were published by the School of Oriental and African Studies in a typescript of very limited circulation and have long been sought by devotees of Graham's translation. In this volume, Harold Roth presents an edited version of these notes along with other essays on the text, philosophy, and translation of this beloved Taoist classic. A chapter on the significance of Graham's work introduces the volume.

The Prints of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham: A Complete Catalogue is the first book to provide a complete account of the printmaking career of British artist Wilhelmina Barns-Graham (1912-2004), with particular reference to the technical innovations that she pioneered while working in association with master printers.Barns-Graham experimented with a variety of printmaking techniques, finally discovering her ideal means of expression in screenprinting. Through partnerships with innovative printmakers, she experimented with new techniques and materials that allowed her to create prints which, in their intensity of colour and precision of design, have the quality almost of paintings.Based on new research, and drawing on information contained in her numerous diaries, The Prints of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham incorporates a complete illustrated catalogue of all of the artist's known work in etching, linocut, lithography, screenprinting and monotype, from 1946 to 2007. It considers her work in relation to that of other British artists, especially those connected with the St Ives school, and examines her prints in relation to her works in other media, in particular her paintings. This book will prove an invaluable resource for museum curators, students of British art and twentieth-century abstraction, and all those seeking to learn more about this aspect of the career of one of Britain's most important artists of the late 20th-century.
Paleobotany and Biogeography: A Festschrift for Alan Graham in His 80th Year
Alan Graham's accomplishments over a botanical career that spans six decades can be measured by the approximately 250 papers and books that he has published during this time; however, equally significant are his 38 years of teaching at Kent State University and his subsequent 12 years as Research Associate at the Missouri Botanical Garden. This festschrift contains 14 papers prepared by 56 of Alan's friends and colleagues representing 15 nationalities and working in 27 institutions. The participants do not exhaust the list of people who have collaborated with Alan throughout his long and productive scientific career, or the many students who received their degree under Alan Graham, but the papers they have contributed represent those fields in which Alan has had the greatest impact through his work. Taken together, they not only advance knowledge but also demonstrate closely that the efforts of Alan Graham during the course of his career will carry on for centuries in the future as we find greater clarity and develop even more robust hypotheses of the evolution of the vegetation of the Americas.
